A pre-polymer matrix formulation for a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) display includes, in one aspect, a monofunctional monomer, a trifunctional oligomer, and a trifunctional monomer. A product, in another aspect, includes a PDLC display formulation comprising a polymer matrix having a plurality of liquid crystal (LC) domains dispersed therein, wherein the polymer matrix comprises a polymerized product of a monofunctional monomer, a trifunctional oligomer, and a trifunctional monomer, and a pair of electrodes having the PDLC display formulation positioned therebetween. The PDLC display formulation is characterized as having a substantially constant optical transparency during application of a low power direct current (DC) electromagnetic field between the electrodes for a predefined duration of time.

Matrix formulation for polymer dispersed liquid crystal displays in low power direct current (DC) electromagnetic field application

A method includes acquiring particles doped with at least one analyte and forming a monolithic reference material. The method includes forming includes using the analyte-doped particles as feedstock particles in an additive manufacturing process. A product includes a monolithic reference material formed of Stöber particles doped with a trace element. A method includes acquiring particles doped with platinum group elements (PGEs). The method includes forming a monolithic reference material using the PGE-doped particles as feedstock particles in an additive manufacturing process.

Additive manufacturing of microanalytical reference materials

An ink for forming a scintillator product includes a phenylated siloxane polymer having at least one functional group per molecule for crosslinking, a filler having a refractive index about matching a refractive index of the phenylated siloxane polymer, where the refractive indices are within about 5% of one another, a rheology modifier, and at least one fluorescent dye.

Optically transparent 3D printed polysiloxane scintillators

A method of forming a three-dimensional structure of liquid crystal (LC) elastomers includes contacting a resin layer of LC oligomers with a layer of photoalignment material, and exposing a portion of photoalignment material to light for aligning the portion of photoalignment material in a first orientation. The LC oligomers adjacent the illuminated portion of photoalignment material align to the first orientation of the illuminated portion. The portion of aligned LC oligomers of the resin layer are cured. Operations for forming additional layers include creating a relative movement of the resin layer away from the photoalignment material, contacting another resin layer with the photoalignment material, and exposing another portion of photoalignment material to light for aligning the photoalignment material in a different orientation. The LC oligomers adjacent the illuminated portion of photoalignment material align to the different orientation, and the portion of aligned LC oligomers of the resin layer are cured.

Stereolithography additive manufacturing of photoaligned liquid crystal elastomers

A method of forming a three-dimensional structure includes forming a layer of resin comprising liquid crystal oligomers and a photoinitiator, applying a magnetic field to the formed layer in a predefined alignment direction for substantially aligning the liquid crystal oligomers in a first orientation; and exposing the formed layer to radiation for curing a first portion of the layer during application of the magnetic field thereby resulting in the first portion having liquid crystal elastomers substantially aligned in the first orientation. The method includes applying a second magnetic field to the formed layer in a predefined second alignment direction for substantially aligning uncured liquid crystal oligomers in a second orientation, and exposing the layer to radiation for curing a second portion of the layer during application of the second magnetic field thereby resulting in the second portion having liquid crystal elastomers substantially aligned in the second orientation.

Stereolithography additive manufacturing of magnetically aligned liquid crystal elastomers

Fabrication of functional polymer-based particles by crosslinking UV-curable polymer drops in mid-air and collecting crosslinked particles in a solid container, a liquid suspension, or an air flow. The particles can contain different phases in the form or layered structures that contain one to multiple cores, or structures that are blended with dissolved or emulsified smaller domains. A curing system produces ultraviolet rays that are directed onto the particles in the jet stream from one side. A reflector positioned on other side of the jet stream reflects the ultraviolet rays back onto the particles in the jet stream.

Fabricating structured particles through rapid hardening and tailored collection methods

According to one embodiment, a method includes receiving light on a photoconductive layer of an electrophoretic deposition (EPD) device, the EPD device having a chamber defined by a first sheet, a second sheet and a spacer between the first and second sheets, where the first sheet is nonopaque and includes the photoconductive layer, where the second sheet is nonopaque and spaced from the first sheet, where a fluidic solution having a plurality of particles is in the chamber. The particles in the solution are attracted from suspension to illuminated portions of the photoconductive layer in the absence of an external voltage applied to the first and second sheets. The particles become deposited on the illuminated portions of the photoconductive layer.

Self-powered and reversible light-directed electrophoretic deposition device for use in smart windows and photodetector displays

According to one embodiment, a system includes a first sheet being nonopaque, a second sheet being nonopaque spaced from the first sheet, a spacer positioned between the first sheet and the second sheet, a chamber defined between the first and second sheets and the spacer, and a fluidic solution in the chamber. In addition, the first sheet includes a photoconductive layer. Moreover, solution has a plurality of particles, where the particles in the solution are attracted to illuminated portions of the photoconductive layer upon illumination of said portions in the absence of an external voltage applied to the first and second sheets.
