Flexible tube for automobile exhaust systems

A plurality of corrugated sheet metal portions are put on one another to constitute a honeycomb metallic catalyst bed. Each sheet metal portion has a plurality of straight, parallel, alternate ridge and groove portions, so that when each upper sheet metal portion is properly put on a corresponding lower sheet metal portion having the groove portions of the upper sheet metal portion put on the ridge portions of the lower sheet metal portion, there are defined therebetween a plurality of through cells each having a regular square cross section. A case encases therein the honeycomb metallic catalyst bed. Inlet and outlet pipes are connected to front and rear ends of the case.

A flexible pipe unit for an exhaust pipe line of an internal combustion engine comprises a metal bellows which has a front open end adapted to be connected to a first exhaust pipe and a rear open end adapted to be connected to a second exhaust pipe. A cylindrical outer case of metal is coaxially disposed about the metal bellows in a manner to define therebetween a cylindrical space. A first structure is arranged between a front end of the outer case and a front end of the bellows to achieve a mechanical connection therebetween. A second structure is arranged between a rear end of the outer case and a rear end of the bellows to achieve a mechanical connection therebetween. At least one of the first and second structures comprises a spring member by which the bellows and the outer case are resiliently connected.

Flexible pipe unit for use in exhaust pipe line of automotive engine

A circular plate spring for use in a flexible pipe unit comprises an annular base portion constructed of a spring metal plate and a plurality of equally spaced resilient support portions integral with the annular base portion. The resilient support portions are raised from the annular base portion so that each support portion is inclined relative to an imaginary plane on which the annular base portion lies.

For coupling first and second metal pipes, a coupling structure is provided which comprises a first diametrically angled end portion of the first metal pipe and a second diametrically enlarged end portion of the second metal pipe. The second enlarged end portion is mated with the first enlarged end portion so that the first and second metal pipes are aligned. A collar member of metal is concentrically disposed within the mated first and second enlarged end portions. The collar member is formed, around an axially middle portion thereof, with an annular ridge which entirely and intimately contacts with inner surfaces of the mated first and second enlarged end portions. A fastening ring of metal is concentrically disposed about the mated first and second enlarged end portions. The fastening ring is so shaped as to have a concave inner surface which intimately and entirely contacts with rounded outer surfaces of the mated first and second enlarged end portions.

Coupling structure for coupling two pipes

A coupling structure between a cylindrically united end portion of a breeches pipe and a cylindrical end portion of a tubular pipe. The cylindrically united end portion has at diametrically opposed portions thereof respective grooves each extending axially from a circular end of the cylindrically united end portion. The cylindrical end portion of the tubular pipe has at diametrically opposed portions thereof respective slots each extending axially from a circular end of the cylindrical end portion. The cylindrically united end portion of the breeches pipe is inserted into the cylindrical end portion of the tubular pipe in such a manner that grooves are mated and merged with the slots respectively. The circular end of the tubular pipe is entirely welded to an outer surface of the cylindrically united end portion of the breeches pipe and a periphery of each slot is entirely welded to the corresponding groove to achieve a hermetic sealing therebetween.

To connect a holding bracket to a muffler, an improved connecting structure therebetween is proposed. The muffler includes a tubular case and two end plates which are connected to axially open ends of the tubular case by means of caulking thereby to form around each axially end of the case a caulked raised portion. The bracket includes a metal rod and a metal plate. The metal plate includes an upper gripping part which grips the caulked raised portion and a lower gripping part which grips the metal rod. The metal plate has between the upper and lower gripping parts an intermediate wall portion which is put on the metal rod, so that when the muffler is properly held by the supporting bracket, entire weight of the muffler is substantially supported by the metal rod.

In order to increase the heat exchange capacity and efficiency of a cooling fin for an automotive radiator, air conditioner heat exchanger, or the like, a plurality of small triangular or similar shaped projections which produce a texture similar to that of a vegetable grater, are arranged to project into the flow of a fluid medium which passes over the fin in a manner to split a part of the flow into spiralling flow patterns which curl along the surface of fin downstream of the projections and transfer heat from said surface to the fluid medium or vice versa.

A muffler of the expansion type comprises an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe connected with each other through a main body. Minimization of pressure pulsation is achieved by a variety of means including appropriately-located apertures in those portions of the walls of said pipes within said main body, an apertured partition within said main body so located that exhaust gas passes through said partition, and appropriate tapering of said pipes. A foamed, heat-resistant material may be positioned over said apertures in said walls of said pipes. Pipe constructions suitable for mass production and pipe-to-main body constructions free of the danger of separation during prolonged use are shown.

Muffler

A muffler comprising: a cylindrical body closed at opposite ends with end members; an exhaust gas in-flow tube penetrating and secured to one of the end members; an exhaust gas out-flow tube penetrating and secured to the other end member; and at least one perforated partition wall member for supporting both the tubes and dividing the interior of the body; the exhaust gas in-flow tube at least having an end portion of an inner diameter smaller than the inner diameter of an exhaust tube connected to the exhaust gas in-flow tube, the end portion being closed with a porous body and communicating with one of the sections of the body interior through the porous body; the exhaust gas out-flow tube being open at opposite ends, one of the ends communicating with the other section; and at least one of the tubes being formed in the peripheral wall with a shunting hole.

A muffler comprising: an upper case provided at the opposite ends with semi-cylindrical inlet and outlet sections respectively and having an outwardly raised central portion and an integral flange-like edge portion; a lower case joined at a flange-like edge portion to that of said upper case and substantially symmetrical with said upper case with respect to the underside thereof; an exhaust inlet tube forming member having at least a semi-cylindrical inlet section inserted in a cylindrical inlet formed by the inlet sections of said upper and lower cases joined together and a gutter-like guide section connected to said inlet section and being joined to said upper case, lower case or both of them, said forming member being provided adjacent to an end thereof with a perforated portion; and an exhaust outlet tube forming member having at least a semi-cylindrical outlet section fitted in a cylindrical outlet formed by the outlet sections of said upper and lower cases and a gutter-like guide section connected to said outlet section and being joined to said upper case, lower case or both of them; the exhaust inlet and outlet tubes formed in this way within the muffler body being communicated with each other through an exhaust gas passage formed between the outer surface of said individual component parts and the inner surface of said case and also through said passage, the end of said outlet tube being positioned behind the leading end of said inlet tube.

Mufflers suitable for use with automobile engines include a main body closed at the forward and rear ends thereof by forward and rear end plates, an inlet pipe leading into the main body through an aperture in the forward end plate and an outlet pipe leading out of the main body through the rear end plate. Features in accordance with the present invention contributing to muffling of engine sound are a flared end on the upstream end of the outlet pipe, a porous covering of heat-resistant material over the downstream end of the inlet pipe, short-circuit holes in at least one of the pipes, a porous partition separating the interior of the main body into forward and rear chambers, and selected ratios of the lengths of the portions of the inlet and outlet pipes within the main body.
