A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal display panel including a liquid crystal cell between first second polarizing plates; and a surface light source device. The surface light source device includes a light source unit, a light guide plate for outputting first directivity light having directivity of maximum intensity in a first direction, which forms a predetermined angle from a normal direction of the light output surface in a plane approximately parallel to a light guiding direction of light, and having a high ratio of a polarized light component oscillating in the plane and a prism sheet being configured to convert the first directivity light into second directivity light directed in a second direction within a predetermined angle from the normal direction of the light output surface of the light guide plate while substantially maintaining a polarization state of the first directivity light.

Liquid crystal display apparatus

A liquid crystal display apparatus comprises: a liquid crystal display panel including a liquid crystal cell between a first polarizing plate and a second polarizing plate; and a surface light source device having a light source unit and a light guide plate. In a polarized light output from the light guide plate, when the normal direction of a light output surface is defined to be at a polar angle of 90&#xb0;, and the light guiding direction of the light guide plate is defined to be a direction of an azimuth angle of 0&#xb0;-180&#xb0;, a ratio La/Lt of integrated intensity La of output light in ranges where the polar angle is 50&#xb0; to 80&#xb0; and the azimuth angle is 135&#xb0; to 225&#xb0;, 0&#xb0; to 45&#xb0;, and 315&#xb0; to 360&#xb0; to integrated intensity Lt of total output light is 0.3 or more.

To solve an uneven light quantity caused in a case where a light guide plate, in which light from a spot light source such as an LED enters an surface, changes by 90 degrees and exits the light to the outside, is used as a backlight. The light guide plate of the invention includes a light flux unifying region. The light flux unifying region has an incident surface, a first surface, and an exit surface. Light fluxes emitted from a light source enter the incident surface. The first surface is almost perpendicular to the incident surface and the intensity distribution of the light fluxes having entered is unified at the first surface. The exit surface is disposed almost parallel with the incident surface and the unified light fluxes exit from the exit surface. A boundary line between the incident surface and the first surface has a zigzag surface.

Light guide plate and display device using the same

A set of light guide blocks B L,&tilde;B L,provide a tandem arrangement. The light guide block B L,is supplied with light from a primary light source L,. The other primary light sources L,, L,are arranged in recesses formed around distal portions of the light guide blocks B L,, B L,, supplying the light guide blocks B L,, B L,with primary light, respectively. Overlap of mutually neighboring light guide blocks gives tang-shaped overlapping portions,as well as overlapping bands,, thereby avoiding electrodes at both ends of the primary light sources L,, L,from causing short of brightness. The light guide blocks B L,&tilde;B L,may be in the form of unified single guide plate. Primary light sources L,&tilde;L,may have a shape such that electrode sections of both ends are curved. A compact surface light source device with a large emission area is provided.

Tandem lighting panel

An asymmetric prism sheet, surface light source and LCD to which the asymmetric prism sheet is applied is provided. A cold cathode tube backed by a reflector supplies light to an incidence surface of a directional emission guide plate. A polarization separation sheet and a liquid crystal panel are disposed outside of the asymmetric prism sheet, with the reflector disposed along a back face. First and second slopes of each asymmetric prism element rows have inclination angles &phgr;a, &phgr;b which are selected as to allow a secondary ray to exist inside a main ray emitted from a frontal face in a manner such that the main ray is deflected toward a generally frontal direction by way of internal reflection of the second slope while the secondary ray is deflected toward a generally frontal direction by way of double internal reflection of the first and second slopes. An outer face provides an uneven face such as non-glare-processed face, orthogonal prismatic face or lens face. Outside of an outer face may be arranged elements such as additional prism sheet or lens sheet.
