Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system for quasi-coherent detection of at least one multi-frequency signal over an optical fiber, including a multi-frequency pulse generator, a circulator, a coherent detector and a processor, the pulse generator for generating at least one multi-frequency pulse train including at least two pulses each having a different frequency, the pulse train including a plurality of carriers, the coherent detector for receiving at least one backscattered signal from the optical fiber and the processor for quasi-coherent aggregation of the carriers in the backscattered signal, wherein the processor channelizes the backscattered signal into at least one complex signal for each frequency in the carriers and wherein for each complex signal, the processor respectively extracts at least one of an amplitude change and a phase change for each one of the carriers and selectively aggregates at least one of the changes for the carriers for determining if an event has occurred over the optical fiber.

Real-time quasi-coherent detection and fiber sensing using multi-frequency signals

A method of providing in-line Raman amplification in an optical fiber sensing system, including the procedures of generating a probe light having a probe wavelength, transmitting the probe light into an optical fiber, generating at least one Raman pump light at a respective pump wavelength, the pump wavelength being shorter than the probe wavelength, generating at least one Raman seed light at a respective seed wavelength, the seed wavelength being between the pump and probe wavelengths, transmitting the Raman pump light into the optical fiber, transmitting the Raman seed light into the optical fiber and propagating the Raman pump light, the Raman seed light and the probe light along the optical fiber to achieve distributed Raman amplification of signal light produced by the probe light as it propagates along the optical fiber.

Method and system for high sensitivity in distributed fiber sensing applications

Arbitrary pulse shaping in high peak power fiber lasers

Narrow line width, high power pulses of optical radiation may be generated by the combination of stimulated emission and stimulated Raman scattering within a rare earth doped optical fibre (). The signals of a first () and second () seed laser sources are coupled into the fiber. The radiation of the pulsed first seed laser source () is amplified by stimulated emission of the rare earth ions so that the threshold for stimulated Raman scattering into the mode of the second seed laser sourceis exceeded, and efficient SRS transfers nearly all the power into the mode seeded by the second seed laser source ().

Generation of narrow line width high power optical pulses

Mode expander isolator for a fiber laser amplifier comprising an optical fiber input, an optical fiber output, an isolator and at least one lens, the optical fiber input for coupling a first optical fiber with the mode expander isolator, the optical fiber output for coupling a second optical fiber with the mode expander isolator, the isolator being positioned between the optical fiber input and the optical fiber output for preventing back-reflected laser light from reaching the optical fiber input and wherein the isolator and the at least one lens form a free space mode expander.
