An apparatus and system are disclosed for protecting a power distribution unit from an electrical fault. A fuse interrupts a flow of electrical current in response to the electrical current rising above a current rating of the fuse. A current sensor measures the amplitude of the electrical current and outputs a current amplitude signal. A relay interrupts the flow of electrical current in response to an OFF signal. A fault module receives the current amplitude signal and sends the OFF signal to the relay in response to the amplitude of the electrical current exceeding a threshold value. The relay, the fuse, and the threshold value are selected so that a switching time of the relay is less than an opening time of the fuse for an amplitude of the electrical current between the threshold value and a maximum fault current value, so that the relay prevents the fuse from opening.

Battery charge management systems for charging a battery bank including a plurality of batteries connected in series are disclosed that include: a power source having a charging port, the power source capable of providing power to each battery in the battery bank; a multiplexer connected to the battery bank, the multiplexer capable of connecting the charging port to a single battery at a time and capable of switching the connection of the charging port to each battery in the battery bank; and a microcontroller connected to the multiplexer and operatively coupled to each battery in the battery bank, the microcontroller capable of receiving discharge data and charge data for each battery in the battery bank, the microcontroller capable of instructing the multiplexer to switch the connection of the charging port with each battery in dependence upon the discharge data and the charge data for that battery.

An apparatus for error checking in a power supply includes a power module that determines that the power supply is in a self-test condition. The self-test condition involves the power supply being connected to an input power source while it is disconnected from the electronic load that it normally services. A load module connects an internal test load to the power supply when the power supply is in self-test condition, and an error checking module performs error check operations on the power supply while it is connected to the test load. The apparatus also includes a notify module that actuates an indicator when the error checking module determines that there are one or more faults in the power supply. The apparatus may also include a log module for storing error messages and reports in non-volatile memory.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for event, time, and failure state recording in a power supply. Disclosed is a power supply that receives AC voltage as an input and provides regulated DC voltage as an output; a microcontroller integrated into the power supply that regulates output voltage and monitors, records, and reports operating conditions of the power supply; and a non-volatile solid-state storage that can be repeatedly read from, written to, and erased by the microcontroller and integrated within the microcontroller such that only a single address is needed to access both the microcontroller and the solid-state storage, the solid-state storage configured to store operating data received from the microcontroller, the operating data including the recorded operating conditions of the power supply.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for measuring voltage, current, and power in a power supply. The apparatus consists of a voltage measuring module which measures the peak voltage through an inductor in a switching power supply stage of the power supply for a portion of the switching period. A current measuring module measures the peak current in the switching power supply stage for a portion of the switching period. The measured currents and voltages are proportional to the voltage and current at a point in the power supply where a power measurement is desired. The voltage and current values are multiplied along with a constant to provide an accurate measure of the power at a point in the power supply. The constant generally includes a combination of a calibration constant, an RMS conversion factor, a voltage conversion factor, and a current conversion factor.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for a high efficiency redundant power system. First and second power supplies are connected in parallel to power a load. Each power supply includes a primary stage and a regulator stage. Each primary stage regulates voltage on an internal bus that is input for each regulator stage. Each regulator stage regulates a regulated bus connected to the load. A power meter detects power provided to the load and determines if the provided power is below a predefined power threshold. A regulator control module shuts down the regulator stage of the first power supply after the provided power falls below the predefined power threshold so the second power supply powers the load and the primary stage of the first power supply remains operational. A recovery module starts up the regulator stage of the first power supply after failure of the second power supply.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for controlling fan speed. A power sensing module senses input voltage and current of a power supply. The power supply includes one or more stages and regulates at least one output bus. A power calculation module calculates input power from the input voltage and the input current. A temperature sensing module senses an ambient temperature and/or a temperature at a component cooled by a fan. A fan speed calculation module calculates a fan speed signal for the fan. The fan speed signal is a function of the input power calculated by the power calculation module and the sensed temperature sensed by the temperature sensing module for at least a portion of a fan speed range. A fan speed transmission module transmits the fan speed signal to the fan and adjusts a fan speed based on the fan speed signal.

The fail safe circuit shutdowns at least one power supply when a preset threshold is exceeded and resets to resume normal operation following a temporary fault condition. The fail safe circuit includes a switch coupled to a voltage signal line of a branch of a power supply system, a current sense resistor coupled to the switch for detecting a failure condition in the branch, and a latch coupled to the current sense resistor and the switch for turning the switch off during the failure condition.

Each of the plurality of power supplies has an input and an output. Each of the plurality of power supplies are coupled to one of the plurality of sources. One of the plurality of power supplies provides a power status signal. The outputs of the plurality of power supplies are coupled together. The power supply system includes a switching circuit coupled to the plurality of sources and receives the power status signal. The power supply system further includes a back up power supply. The back up power supply has an input and an output. The input of the back up power supply is coupled to the switching circuit. The output of the back up power supply is coupled to the output of the plurality of power supplies. The switching circuit monitors the power status signal and switches in the back up power supply when a power interruption occurs. With the present invention, full power is maintained in a power supply arrangement that includes parallel power supplies powered by separate AC sources via separate line cords. The aspects of the present invention provide an effective and efficient solution in a straightforward manner.

A power supply system is disclosed. The circuit comprises a main power supply portion, the main power supply portion including a transformer, and an auxiliary power supply portion wherein the auxiliary power supply portion is coupled to the main power supply portion via the transformer. Through the use of the power supply system in accordance with the present invention, the auxiliary output voltage is generated by the main power supply. Therefore, the present invention provides the auxiliary output voltage supply by using the same pulse width modulator and switching devices as used by the main power supply. The use of a power supply system in accordance with the present invention thereby eliminates the need for the components required to maintain the auxiliary output voltage.

In a computer system accessible via a keyboard--in which the keyboard and system are supposed to reset automatically in reaction to power outages or other disturbances lasting for longer than a first period of time, in which the keyboard and system are generally unaffected by power outages or other disturbances lasting for less than a second period of time less than said first period, and in which lockouts can occur during system power outages or other disturbances lasting for a time greater than said second period and less than said first period--an anti-lockout circuit is interposed between a DC low voltage output port of the system and a DC voltage input port of the keyboard. This circuit is powered by the low DC voltage appearing at said output port and operates in response to small changes in that voltage to switchably interrupt transfer of that voltage to the keyboard input port. When the output voltage falls below a predetermined voltage level at which the system is required to reset itself, the subject circuit interrupts transfer of the output voltage to the keyboard and delays reinstatement of the transfer for a period of time at least sufficient to ensure that the keyboard circuits will reset.
