A method of making a lithium manganese oxide intercalation compound in powder form comprises forming a solution of a manganese compound and a lithium compound in a solvent; and spray-drying the solution by atomizing the solution to form droplets thereof and contacting the droplets with a stream of non-oxidizing hot gas at a first elevated temperature to evaporate at least a major portion by weight of the solvent present in the solution thereby providing a precursor powder. The precursor powder is heated at a second elevated temperature which is below the melting point of the lithium manganese oxide compound. The second temperature is sufficient to cause reaction among constituents in the precursor powder thereby providing the lithium manganese oxide compound having a spinel unit structure.

Method for preparing lithium manganese oxide compounds

A solid secondary lithium electrochemical cell comprises a physical mixture of Li.sub.x n.sub.2 O.sub.4 (spinel) (0&lt;x.ltoreq.2) and at least one second compound selected from LiFeO.sub.3, .alpha.LiFe.sub.5 O.sub.8, .beta.-LiFe.sub.5 O.sub.8, LiFe.sub.3 O.sub.4, LiFe.sub.2 O.sub.3, Li.sub.1+w, Fe.sub.5 O.sub.8 (0&lt;w&lt;4), Li.sub.y V.sub.2 O.sub.5 (0&lt;y&lt;2), and Li.sub.z FeV.sub.2 O.sub.5 (0&lt;z&lt;2). The cell is particularly suitable for use with anodes carbon materials.

This invention is directed to lithium and lithium alloy metal substrates, coated with a polymeric layer containing dispersed lithium or lithium alloy metal particles. The coated metal finds use as anode material in solid electrochemical cells.

Lithium containing solid electrochemical cells

A solid electrolyte that includes (1) a first catalyst that is capable of initiating the polymerization of solvent components at elevated temperatures in order to increase the resistance (or impedance) of the solid electrolyte and thereby prevent thermal runaway and/or (2) a second catalyst that is capable of initiating the polymerization of flammable substances (e.g., olefins) in the solvent and batteries make therefrom are provided. To assure that the catalysts do not prematurely initiate polymerization below a certain temperature, the catalysts may be microencapsulated within a heat sensitive material that disintegrates or dissolve at a predetermined elevated temperature to release the catalysts. Microencapsulation permits the controlled release of the catalysts into the electrolyte under the appropriate conditions.

Solid electrolytes containing a source of lithium cations and a source of thiocyanate anions and methods for preparing electrolytic cells from such solid electrolytes are provided. Preferably the solid electrolyte includes LiPF.sub.6 and [CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.3 ].sub.4 NSCN.
