Disclosed are a composite material having an anti-wear property and a process for producing the same. The composite material includes a matrix of a low melting point Sn alloy having a melting point of from 80.degree. to 280.degree. C., and metallic dispersing particles dispersed in the matrix in an amount of from 10 to 50% by volume. When the composite material is utilized to make a rough mold for preparing a prototype, it sharply improves the anti-wear property of the rough mold, and it can be re-used for a plurality of times without adversely affecting the sharply improved anti-wear property. The composite material provides the advantages effect best when the metallic dispersing particles are Fe-C alloy dispersing particles and/or Fe-W-C alloy dispersing particles which were subjected to a surface treatment including an Sn or Ni electroplating followed by a ZnCl.sub.2 .cndot.NH.sub.4 Cl flux depositing.

Disclosed are a pigment, a production process therefor, a production process therefor and for improving its weather resistance, and a metallic paint made therefrom. The pigment includes a transparent or semi-transparent scaly substrate, a TiO.sub.2 layer coated on an entire surface of the substrate, light absorbing portions formed on a surface of the TiO.sub.2 layer in a scattering manner and including low order oxides of titanium, and glossy portions formed on a surface of the TiO.sub.2 layer in a scattering manner and having a metallic glossy effect. The pigment produces a metallic glossy effect resulting from the glossy portions, strong interference colors resulting from the TiO.sub.2 layer and substance colors resulting from the light absorbing portions, and it exhibits a great covering power. Such an excellent pigment can be obtained by the production process in which sputtering is carried out onto a conventional pearl mica pigment, and its weather resistance can be improved by the production process in which chromium (III) hydroxide is repeatedly coated on a conventional pearl mica pigment before and after the sputtering. When the metallic paint is made from the pigment, it naturally has the metallic glossy effect, the strong interference colors, the substance colors and the great covering power all of which result from the pigment and is suitable for an automobile top coat paint.

Pigment and process for producing the same

This invention relates to a shielding material used as a radiation shield of a container containing radioactive wastes. A radiation shield with an excellent heat-transferring property is fabricated from composite particles (A) obtained by coating core particles (a) of radiation-shielding property with a metal (b) of high thermal conductivity. Composite particles are formed into a certain shape of radiation shield by hot-press forming or other forming or packed into the internal space of radioactive waste container or the shield container cavity to compose a radiation shield.

Disclosed herein suspension electroplating of fine particles with metal. An electroplating operatively equipped with a cathode and anode is charged with a a metallic ion-containing electrolyte and particles to be electroplated. The particles have a size of from 0.1 to 10 .mu.m. At least a part of the surface of each particle is conductive. Such a stationary circulating flow of a suspension of the particles in the electrolyte is formed in the bath that the particles are maintained in the suspended condition; the suspension is circulated substantially without coming in contact with the anode; the particles may have a chance of colliding with substantially all surface areas of the working surface of the cathode, and are repeatedly brought in collision with the cathode at a velocity with a normal component of from 0.6 to 6.0 m/min; and a particle concentration of the suspension at the time of collision is from 30 to 55% by volume. When such a stationary flow has been formed, a current for electroplating is caused to pass, whereupon deposition of metal on the particles proceeds without deposition of the particles and metal on the cathode.

Electroplating of fine particles with metal

There is disclosed a process for coating fine powder of a metal, a ceramic, a plastic or an organic pigment with a metal or a ceramic comprising: (a) dispersing particles of said fine powder into primary particles by fluid jet mill treatment in an inert atmosphere; (b) heating the dispersed fine powder in an inert atmosphere under reduced pressure; (c) placing the heated powder in an evacuable rotary barrel sputtering chamber, forming a fluidized bed by rotating the barrel at a low speed and coating said fluidized powder by sputtering as the barrel is being rotated. By this process, fine powders of metals, ceramics and plastics having a particle diameter of 0.1-10 .mu.m can be uniformly coated by a metal or a ceramic. There is also provided an apparatus therefor.
