An image forming apparatus includes a fixing unit including a fixing member that heats a developer for fixing the developer to a medium, a temperature control unit that heats the fixing member and controls a temperature of the fixing member, a transport member that transports the medium through the fixing unit, and a transport control unit that controls a transport speed at which the transport member transports the medium. At least one of before and after an image forming operation, the image forming apparatus performs a temperature control operation of the fixing unit while transporting the medium through the fixing unit. When the image forming apparatus performs the temperature control operation at least one of before and after the image forming operation, the transport control unit causes the transport member to transport the medium at a transport speed slower than a fastest transport speed among a plurality of preset transport speeds.

An image forming device fusing a developer transferred to a recording medium surface based on inputted print data includes a heat source, a fusion member supported in a freely rotatable manner and heated by the heat source, a pressure application member positioned to face the fusion member and pressing against the fusion member, a temperature detection device positioned to face the pressure application member and detecting a surface temperature of the pressure application member, and a temperature control part controlling a heating temperature by the heat source based on a detection result by the temperature detection device. The temperature control part selects a second set temperature that is lower than a preset first set temperature when the surface temperature of the pressure application member detected by the temperature detection device is less than a predetermined temperature, to control a temperature of the fusion member.

A printer is provided that is capable of accurately detecting whether a recording medium is remaining even where a temperature changes rapidly. The printer has a fusing unit rotating to fuse a developer attached to a recording medium P onto the recording medium P with heat, a heater applying heat to the fusing unit, a temperature detection element detecting a temperature of the fusing unit heated by the heater, a timer measuring a time duration, a temperature gradient calculation unit calculating a temperature gradient of change in the temperature of the fusing unit based on a detection result of the temperature of the fusing unit detected by the temperature detection element, and a CPU determining whether the recording medium P is remaining on the fusing unit based on the temperature gradient calculated by the temperature gradient calculation unit and a time duration of the temperature gradient measured by the timer.
