In order to eliminate timing offset between reproduction devices when a content transmitted from a distribution device is received and reproduced by a plurality of reproduction devices, data (SCR) indicating the elapsed time from the start of the content, generated by counting clock pulses, and data (FCR) indicating a frame number generated by counting the number of frames reproduced by a decoder () are transmitted by the distribution device, and a clock generation unit () in each reproduction device is controlled so that data (STC) indicating the elapsed time and data (FTC) indicating the frame number, which are generated in the same manner by each reproduction device, match the transmitted data (SCR, FCR). Synchronization between reproduction devices can thereby be established even when, in a state in which a content is being reproduced by one reproduction device, another reproduction device subsequently connects to the distribution device.

A receiving device includes: a receiver that receives a signal including PPM symbols; a clock generator that generates a clock for sampling; an A/D converter that digital-converts the received signal; a reference position detector that detects a leading position of the PPM symbols based on data from the A/D converter; and a clock error detector that detects a clock error. The clock error detector includes: a pulse position detector that detects a pulse position in the PPM symbols based on data from the reference position detector and A/D converter; a position error calculator that calculates a deviation of the pulse position based on data from the reference position detector, A/D converter, and pulse position detector; and a clock error calculator that calculates the clock error based on data from the position error calculator. Video can be prevented from becoming discontinuous, when the communication method is switched.

Even if it is not possible to predict the delays such as those involved with transmission from the video display device to the audio output device, and even if the delays fluctuate, it is possible to synchronize the video display with the audio output.
