A cathode ray tube includes a vacuum envelope having a substantially rectangular panel, a cylindrical neck, and a funnel connecting the panel and the neck. A phosphor screen arranged on the inner surface of the panel generates luminescence upon impingement of electron beams, which are generated by an electron gun assembly disposed in the neck. In order to create a image visible through the panel, a deflection yoke is mounted on the outer surface of the funnel to generate a magnetic field in the funnel, deflect the electron beams, and thereby scan the phosphor screen. According to the present invention, the portion of the funnel over which the deflection yoke is mounted is formed such that the power required to generate a deflection field capable of scanning substantially the entire phosphor screen may be reduced. To this end, the funnel is formed over a predetermined range along a first axis coincident with the axis of symmetry of the cylindrical neck such that at least one cross section of the inner and outer funnel perpendicular to the first axis has a non-circular shape and a maximum diameter along a direction other than those of the major and minor axes of the substantially rectangular panel. Moreover, within this predetermined range, the point on the funnel's cross section that is furthest from the first axis is not located along the direction of the panel's diagonal axis.

First and second index signal phosphor layers are formed on a phosphor screen that is formed on the inner surface of a face plate. A rear plate is provided with first and second light sensing units for detecting signal lights from the first and second index signal phosphor layers, respectively. Each first light sensing unit includes a first light collecting plate, which radiates absorbing light having a radiation peak wavelength substantially equal to or shorter than the radiation wavelength of each first index signal phosphor layer. Each second light sensing unit includes a second light collecting plate, which radiates absorbing light having a radiation peak wavelength substantially equal to or shorter than the radiation wavelength of each second index signal phosphor layer. Arranged between each second collecting plate and the rear plate is a filter, which transmits the index signal light from the second index signal phosphor layer and shades the index signal light from the first index signal phosphor layer.

A funnel of a cathode ray tube includes a yoke attachment portion on which a deflection yoke is mounted so as to deflect the electron beam emitted from an electron gun along horizontal and vertical axis. At least one cross section of the yoke attachment portion, perpendicular to the tube axis, has an inner contour which is substantially rectangular with four sides. The sides are defined by convexities curved toward the tube axis and each having a peak on the horizontal or vertical axis. The inner contour of the cross section faces the electron beam passage region with a substantially constant gap.

The first support portion is set up on the rear plate and has a proximal end face intimately in contact with the inner surface of the rear plate and a bearing surface substantially parallel to the rear plate. In a color cathode ray tube apparatus, a main electron lens unit for converging three in-line electron beams on a phosphor screen is formed of a plurality of electrodes, including at least first, second, and third electrodes, which are arranged from the cathode side toward the phosphor screen. An asymmetric electron lens, which horizontally diverges and vertically converges the electron beams, is formed on the cathode side in a lens effect region of a first electron lens composed of the second and third electrodes, and an asymmetric second electron lens, which has one effect with respect to the horizontal direction of the electron beams and another with respect to the vertical direction, is formed between the first and second electrodes, at the least. In this arrangement, the effects of the second lens to converge and diverge the electron beams in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively, are enhanced, and the effects of the first electron lens are attenuated, depending on the deflection of the electron beams by means of a deflection yoke. Thus, the horizontal and vertical diameters of beam spots at the peripheral portion of a picture can be reduced.

Color cathode ray tube apparatus

A color cathode-ray tube comprises a phosphor screen formed on an inner surface of a face plate and having a plurality of three-color phosphor layers. A plurality of first index phosphor layers are provided on the phosphor screen and extending in parallel to the three-color phosphor layers, and a plurality of second index phosphor layers are provided on the phosphor screen and inclined to the three-color phosphor layers at a predetermined angle. Electron guns are provided in an envelope and emit electron beams to the screen section so as to dividedly scan a plurality of regions of the screen section. Photoelectric conversion devices are provided on the envelope and detect first index signals and second index signals generated from the first and second index phosphor layers by scanning of the electron beams, respectively. Deflection devices for deflecting the electron beams are controlled by a controller in response to the detected first and second index signals.

A color cathode ray tube apparatus is provided with an electron gun assembly. In the electron gun assembly, three electron beams, which are emitted from cathodes of an in-line arrangement, are accelerated and converged onto a phosphor screen by an electron lens system of the electron gun assembly. The electron lens system is constituted by a plurality of grid electrodes and includes individual electron lenses and a common electron lens. Each of the individual electron lenses has first and second lens powers in horizontal and vertical planes, respectively. Each of the electron beams is diverged in the horizontal plane and converged in the vertical plane by the corresponding individual electron lens due to the first and second lens powers. The common electron lens has third and forth lens powers in the horizontal and vertical planes, respectively. The electron beams from the individual electron lenses are converged in the horizontal plane by the common electron lens due to the third lens power and each of the electron beams diverged by the common electron lens due to the fourth lens power.

A color cathode-ray tube comprises an envelope having rectangular flat face and rear plates opposing each other. A phosphor screen is formed on an inner surface of the face plate. Mask support members are mounted on an inner surface of the rear plate. A shadow mask is arranged in the envelope and supported by the mask support members to face the phosphor screen at a predetermined distance. A plurality of positioning posts are fixed on the inner surface of the rear plate and extend toward the face plate. A plurality of positioning pins extend from the inner surface of the face plate and engage the positioning posts so as to position the face plate at a predetermined position with respect to the rear plate. The shadow mask has setting openings through which the positioning posts extend so as to position the shadow mask at a predetermined position with respect to the rear plate.

A picture apparatus includes a vacuum envelope which has a phosphor screen and a plurality of electron gun assemblies for emitting electron beams to the phosphor screen, and a deflection device for deflecting the electron beams emitted from the electron gun assemblies. The deflection device has a plate-like coupling member arranged to face the vacuum envelope, and a plurality of elemental deflection units for deflecting the electron beams to scan the phosphor screen dividedly. The deflection units are fixed to the coupling member and located at predetermined positions, respectively.

In a color cathode ray tube apparatus including an electron gun assembly having a main electron lens section for focusing and converging three electron beams arranged in a line on a phosphor screen, three electron beam through holes arranged in a line in the arrangement direction of the three electron beams are formed in each of the opposing surfaces of the first electrode having a relatively low potential and a second electrode having a relatively high potential, which electrodes constitute the main electron lens and substantially oppose, the pair of side beam through holes of the second electrode are decentered outward in the arrangement direction of the three electron beams with respect to the pair of side beam through holes of the first electrode, and each of the pair of side beam through holes of any one of the first and second electrodes is formed to have a substantially horizontally elongated shape in which both sides in the arrangement direction of the three electron beams are constituted by arcs and the length of, in the case of the first electrode, the length of the inner arc is larger than the length of the outer arc while, in the case of the second electrode, the length of the inner arc is smaller than the length of the outer arc. The three electron beams can be properly focused to obtain good image characteristics on an entire screen.

In a color cathode ray tube apparatus wherein three in-line electron beams are deflected by horizontal and vertical deflection magnetic fields of a deflector. The three in-line electron beams are arranged along an axis that is inclined with respect to a horizontal axis perpendicular to the tube axis and are emitted from an electron beam producing unit. Of the three electron beams, the center beam is focused at a higher degree than the pair of side beams by an electric field lens forming unit. The pair of side beams are deflected by a deflecting unit in the direction of arrangement of the three electron beams away from the center beam and are made incident on a focusing magnetic field generating device constituting a common magnetic field focusing type electron lens for focusing and converging the three electron beams. Then, the three electron beams are directed to a phosphor screen. Accordingly, the electron beams are desirably focused and converged on the phosphor screen with a small beam spot size.
