A value-sheet issuing device includes a medium supplying section for holding a sheet-like printing medium and supplying said printing medium to a stage for issuing a value sheet, a security processing section for selectively assigning security characteristic for preventing attempted fraudulent use of said value sheets to said printing medium received from said medium supplying section in response to an instruction received from an upper level device, local storage for storing common images used common to issued value sheets, a printer section for printing said common image read out of said local storage means and/or individual information received from said upper level device, said individual information different for each said issued value sheet; and a print verifying section for verifying a print quality of said printed printing medium.

A card reader which drives a card transporting device with a driving motor to transport cards by the card transporting device in a card passage, having a card entering passage formed in the same direction as the card passage by extending the distance between a front surface of a card inlet, from which the cards are inserted, and a front edge of the card transporting device. A magnetic head having a head unit for contacting a magnetic medium comprises at least a pair of magnetic cores which are arranged in the head unit which face each other on sides of a magnetic gap for recording and/or reproducing signals. A spacer is included for maintaining a space between one of the magnetic cores and another member, which may be the other magnetic core or a shield member. The spacer includes a usable life detection device for providing an indication of wear on the head unit which is interrupted when the head unit is worn down to predetermined depth. A method for modifying program of a magnetic tape unit comprising a flash memory for storing programs a storage memory and a CPU for executing the programs stored in the flash memory and storage memory is provided. The method comprises steps of storing a program for rewriting program in the storage memory, making a discrimination when a magnetic tape is mounted in the magnetic tape unit whether the magnetic tape is a normally used recording medium or a medium for modifying program, reading a program to be modified reproduced from the magnetic tape into a buffer when the magnetic tape is the medium for modifying program, and erasing the contents of the flash memory by the CPU by use of the program for rewriting program stored in the storage memory to transfer the program to be modified from the buffer to the flash memory. Thus the magnetic tape unit automatically modifies the program even if the operator does not modify or notice the program to the magnetic tape unit by way of a special command or connector, so that no special connector or application program for the host need be provided. Furthermore, the streamer need not be taken out by disassembling a case and the like, so that the operator can modify the programs easily.
