A method includes positioning an expandable balloon, coupled to a distal end of a catheter, at a target location within an organ of a patient, the expandable balloon including multiple electrodes and one or more sensors in proximity to each electrode, wherein the one or more sensors are configured each to measure a characteristic of blood. The expandable balloon is expanded at the target location. A fluid is flowed through an inner lumen of the catheter and into the blood in a vicinity of each electrode. A dependence of the characteristic of blood on time is measured, via the one or more sensors, in proximity to each electrode. Using a processor, it is determined whether or not each electrode is in physical contact with tissue, based on the measured dependence of the characteristic of blood. An indication of whether or not each electrode is in physical contact with tissue is outputted to a user.

A method includes receiving position signals that are indicative of positions of multiple electrodes disposed on an expandable balloon that is fitted at a distal end of a shaft for engaging a lumen of an organ to occlude the lumen. Based on the received position signals, a change is calculated in one or more dimensions of the balloon between (i) a first configuration in which the balloon is inflated but not engaged in the lumen, and (ii) a second configuration in which the balloon is inflated and engaged in the lumen. Using the calculated change, a degree is estimated to which the balloon occludes the lumen. The estimated degree of occlusion is presented to a user.

Embodiments of the present invention include generating a 3D model of a body cavity, and receiving, from a position transducer associated with a medical probe configured to be inserted into the cavity and having at least one elongated electrode disposed along a distal end of the probe, signals indicating orientation and location coordinates of the distal end within the body cavity. Based on the model and the signals, while parts of the given electrode other than the identified segment are not in contact with the inner surface of the cavity, a segment along a length of a given electrode that is in contact with tissue at a site on an inner surface of the cavity is identified. A graphical representation of the model with a visual marker at a location on the model corresponding to the site contacted by the segment of the given electrode is rendered to a display.

Accurate positioning and shape visualization of balloon catheter ablation tags

A system includes a display and a processor. The processor is configured to obtain a point cloud including multiple points representing different respective locations in a body of a subject, the points being labeled as corresponding to respective anatomical structures to which the locations, respectively, belong. The anatomical structures including a first structure and multiple second structures. The processor is further configured to compute a mesh including multiple triangles representing the anatomical structures, by applying a ball-pivoting algorithm to the point cloud with a constraint that none of the triangles include two of the points labeled as corresponding to different respective ones of the second structures. A method includes, using anatomical data, calculating multiple cross-sectional shapes of a lumen of an organ in a body of a patient at multiple respective positions on a medial axis of the lumen. One or more of the positions on the medial axis are identified, at which a given expandable frame of a catheter would fit the cross-sectional shapes.
