Disclosed is a novel family of macrocyclic compounds, coined calixurenes, which comprises linear and cyclic oligomers composed of alternating moieties of an aromatic unit and a ureatic unit, linked to one another via a bridging moiety. The disclosed calixurenes feature multiple heteroatom-containing groups, and can be designed so as to feature other functionalities, and can thus be used in a variety of applications. Further disclosed are processes of preparing the calixurenes, articles containing same and uses thereof.

Polycyclic compounds, termed calixurenes, and uses thereof

A rotaxane consisting of a cucurbituril and an uncharged guest molecule, having low or null affinity therebetween is provided as well as processes for providing the same. Various uses as energy converters ('frictionless' molecular motors), biochips and biosensors using the same are also provided.

Tricyclic compounds and their uses as antiarrhythmic antifibrillatory and defibrillatory agents

The present invention provides a method of detecting a peroxide-based explosive in a sample suspected of consisting of or comprising such explosive, which method comprises dissolving said sample in a suitable organic solvent, contacting the solution with an aqueous solution of a strong acid capable of decomposing said explosive to release hydrogen peroxide, and contacting the resulting mixture with a peroxidase enzyme. Methods are provided for deuteration, tritiation, dedeuteration or detritiation of a carbonyl compound. A catalytic antibody that catalyzes an aldol addition reaction is contacted with a carbonyl compound to exchange at least one hydrogen atom of the carbonyl compound with a deterium or tritium atom of an isotopically enriched water molecule, or to exchange at least one deuterium or tritium atom of the carbonyl compound with a hydrogen atom. The aldol addition reaction may be between an aliphatic ketone donor and an aldehyde acceptor. Isotopically enriched water molecules include deuterium hydrogen oxide, dideuterium oxide, tritium hydrogen oxide, ditritium oxide and deuterium tritium oxide. The catalytic antibody may be that secreted by hybridoma 38C2 (ATCC HB 12005) or 33F12 (ATCC HB 12004).

Novel discogens based on tricycloquinazoline derivatives and methods for their preparation are described. One method for their preparation is to nitrate veratraldehyde and after reducing the resulting nitrate to dimethoxy anthranil to obtain its trimerization thus producing a trisubstituted tricycloquinazoline. Another method is to start with dichlorotoluene and after its nitration to oxidize the nitrate into dichloronitrodiacetoxytoluene, its hydrolysis into benzaldehyde followed by a partial reduction to anthranil and finally by the trimerization of the anthranil to obtain the hexachlorotricycloquinazoline. The novel compounds are useful as fluorescent indicators for high performance oxygen sensors, organic conductors, liquid crystals and polymeric liquid crystals.

Derivatives of tricycloquinazoline and methods for their preparation

There is provided a novel process for the production of the epipodophyllotoxin glycosides, Etoposide and Teniposide. There are further provided certain novel 4'-demethylepipodophyllotoxin derivatives of the following formula ##STR1## where W is hydrogen or 2,3-di-O-acetyl-4,6,O-ethylidene-D-glucopyran-1-yl. These intermediates are easily transformed into Etoposide and Teniposide and into further derivatives of this series.
