A link establishment process for establishing a network link between the first network interface device and a second network interface device is initiated at the first network interface device. During the link establishment process, the first network interface device receives from the second network interface device via the network link, one or more update messages requesting one or more changes to be applied at the first network interface device, the one or more changes for altering operation of one or both of software and firmware stored in one or more memories included in or coupled to the first network interface device. The one or more changes are applied based on the one or more update messages at the first network interface device.

Software/firware updates during network link establishment

A link between a PHY device and a link partner is established by performing link training. If the link becomes at least partially inoperable, a first fast retrain technique is executed. A signature indicating that the first fast retrain technique successfully began but failed during execution before completion of the first fast retrain technique is received at the PHY device. In response to receiving the signature, a second fast retrain technique is executed.

Method for selection between fast retrain procedures

A communication system includes a first physical-layer (PHY) transceiver and a second PHY transceiver. The first PHY transceiver includes (i) a first transmitter and (ii) a first receiver including a first equalizer. The second PHY transceiver includes (i) a second transmitter and (ii) a second receiver including a second equalizer. The first PHY transceiver and the second PHY transceiver are configured to communicate with one another over a full-duplex link, including training the first equalizer on a second training signal transmitted from the second PHY transceiver, and concurrently training the second equalizer on a first training signal transmitted from the first PHY transceiver.

A physical layer transceiver (PHY) includes transmit circuitry including digital and analog transmit portions, receive circuitry including digital and analog receive portions, coupling circuitry configured to couple signals from the transmit circuitry onto a transmission medium, and to couple signals off the transmission medium to the receive circuitry, and transient error compensation circuitry coupled to the digital receive portions and to the analog transmit portions, and configured to detect transient error induced in the receive circuitry by the analog transmit portions and to subtract a transient error correction from data in the receive circuitry. The PHY may include asymmetric Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) controller circuitry, and when the transmit circuitry is in the leg operating in EEE low-power-idle mode, the transient error compensation circuitry may detect transient error induced in the receive circuitry of the leg operating in full-data mode and apply a transient error correction.

Adaptive transient compensation in physical layer transceiver

A PHY device in an Ethernet network in a vehicle includes a transceiver and a processor. The transceiver communicates with a peer PHY over a bidirectional Ethernet link in the vehicle, the transceiver supports communication modes that are separately configurable for transmission and reception, and are selected from (i) a data mode for communication of data, and (ii) a retraining mode for recovering from reception failure, and reception of retraining signals in the retraining mode is less sensitive to interference than reception of data signals in the data mode. The processor sets the transceiver for data mode transmission to, and data mode reception from the peer PHY, and in response to detecting that during data mode reception a reception quality has degraded to below a specified threshold, set the transceiver to reception in the retraining mode while concurrently transmitting to the peer PHY in the data mode.

Unidirectional fast retraining of a bidirectional ethernet link

Systems and methods are described for dynamically updating a duration of link training time for a first stage of link training implemented to set up a first characteristic of a link connection between a physical layer transceiver (PHY) and a link partner. A first stage of link training preconfigured to last for a first duration of time is initiated and a metric of link quality that measures a link connection quality is initiated. Based on the determined metric of link quality, updating the first duration of time for the first stage of link training.

A physical layer transceiver for a node in a wireline communication system includes receiver circuitry for receiving communications from a link partner on a first link path, transmitter circuitry for transmitting communications to the link partner on a second link path, and an energy-efficient Ethernet (EEE) controller for reducing power consumption on the first or second link path, when activity on that link path is reduced. In a low-power mode, there are periodic refresh intervals of a first duration, during which signals are received or transmitted, and, between the refresh intervals, quiet intervals of a second, longer, duration, during which transmission and reception of signals are avoided. The EEE controller detects a change in an environmental condition affecting that link path, and upon detection of that change, adjusts a parameter of the low-power mode on at least one of the first and second link paths.

Energy-efficient Ethernet transceiver that adjusts based on environmental conditions

Methods, systems, and apparatuses are described for wireless communications. More particularly, an access point (AP) identifies a plurality of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) groups associated with a wireless station (STA). The AP determines a communication metric associated with each of the plurality of MU-MIMO groups. The communication metric provides an indication of the compatibility of the STAs in the MU-MIMO group. The AP prioritizes at least one of the plurality of MU-MIMO groups based at least in part on the communication metric associated with the prioritized MU-MIMO group. The AP creates a preferred group list and/or a blacklisted group list and included the prioritized MU-MIMO group in the appropriate group list.

Smart grouping for multi-user multiple-input/multiple-output stations

Wireless node selects modulation coding schemes (MCS) and number of spatial streams for transmitting data to devices via a MU-MIMO transmission based on the total number of spatial streams. In one implementation, a wireless node selects first MCS, first number of spatial stream(s) for a first device, and total number of spatial streams to be used in the MU-MIMO transmission so as to maximize the data rate to the first device, then selects a second MCS and a second number of spatial stream(s) for a second device based on the selected total number of spatial streams. In another implementation, the wireless node toggles the first selection of the MCS and spatial stream(s) between the first and second devices for fairness purposes. In another implementation, a wireless selects the MCS and the spatial streams for the receiving nodes so as to maximize the aggregate data rate for the MU-MIMO transmission.

System and method for rate adaptation based on total number of spatial streams in MU-MIMO transmissions

Described herein is a system and method for enhanced channel access in existing communication networks. The system comprising: a first enhanced node comprising a first processor, the first processor configured to: transmit a legacy frame header of a physical layer protocol data unit (PPDU), the legacy frame header comprising an indicator indicating that sub-PPDUs will be transmitted during a duration associated with transmission of a legacy PPDU; a second enhanced node comprising a second processor configured to receive the legacy frame header; and a third enhanced node comprising a third processor configured to receive the legacy frame header.

System and method for enabling channel access enhancements in existing communication networks

Methods, systems, and devices are described for wireless communication. In one aspect, a method of wireless communication includes receiving, by a first wireless device, compressed beamforming information from each of a plurality of stations, the compressed beamforming information including a feedback signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) value and compressed feedback matrix. The method also includes determining a multi-user signal-to-interference-plus noise ratio (SINR) metric for each of the plurality of stations based at least in part on the received feedback SNR values and the received compressed feedback matrices.

Using compressed beamforming information for optimizing multiple-input multiple-output operations

A first communication device can dynamically select a mode of communication (such as a MIMO mode or a SISO mode) to improve throughput. In selecting the communication mode, the first communication device may determine whether a powerline medium effectively supports multi-channel communication. Even when the first communication device and a second communication device both are capable of using a MIMO mode, the first communication device may select a SISO mode if it determines that one of the channels is ill-conditioned for communication. For example, the powerline medium may be affected by a missing conductor, protective circuit, or other attenuation that impairs the second channel differently than the first channel. If the disparity between the first channel and the second channel is greater than a threshold, the first communication device may switch to a SISO mode to improve performance.

Dynamic mode selection for MIMO powerline devices

A first network device determines whether a first reference code included in at least a first transmission on a communication channel is associated with a code configured in the first network device. The communication channel is shared among a plurality of communication networks and the first reference code is associated with a first communication network of the plurality of communication networks. The first network device joins the first communication network associated with the first reference code in response to determining the first reference code is associated with the code configured in the first network device. The first network device communicates with a second network device in the first communication network using the code configured in the first network device.

Channel reuse among communication networks sharing a communication channel

A method includes determining that a first station has been allocated a first time period to transmit over a shared medium in a network. The method includes transmitting, from the first station to a second station over the shared medium during the first time period, wherein stations other than the first station and the second station refrain from transmitting over the shared medium during the first time period. The method includes receiving, from the second station, a request message to allow the second station to transmit during the first time period and a requested amount of time to transmit. The method includes, in response to allowing the second station to transmit during the first time period, determining an authorized amount of time for the second station to transmit during the first time period, and transmitting an authorization message for the second station to transmit and the authorized amount of time.
