This invention relates to a labelling machine for bottles which includes a bottle feeding mechanism to feed the bottles to a revolving bottle support platform. The support platform directs bottles to a labelling mechanism and an application mechanism prior to their removal by a bottle withdrawing mechanism. The bottles are maintained against undesired rotation on the support platform by axial force on the top of each bottle to produce frictional contact between the bottom of each bottle and an elastic support plate for each bottle turntable on the revolving bottle support platform. The support plate includes an elastic body and several block-shaped friction bodies imbedded therein and distributed over its surface. The friction bodies have exposed contact surfaces, which lie in the plane of the exposed surface 13 of the elastic material. Such a support plate includes a long service life and capable of providing a high degree of friction between the micro-cracked bottom of a bottle and the friction bodies.

A bottle plate for receiving a bottle in a bottle-processing machine has a metal plate to which a flexible covering is adhered in order to satisfy high requirements regarding frictional contact between the covering and bottom of the bottle, granules of silicon carbide or corundum are embedded in the covering. These granules project into fissures in the microscopically uneven bottom of the bottle hook therein and thus fix the bottle to the disk against slip. The covering is flexible to promote this contact.

In a labeling station that is intended for articles like bottles, that has at least one revolving or pivoting label grasper-applicator with a capture-and-release surface for taking a label from a stack and applying it to an article to be labeled, and that has holders that hold the edge of the stack of labels, the improvement which comprises controls for the holders (41, 42) or supplementary holders (45, 46) that hold the edge of the stack so that the retentive force the holders exert on the labels can be adjusted to be made greater than the attractive force exerted by the capture-and-release surface of the grasper-applicator (2, 3, 4) and, when the stack is held in a moving magazine, than the inertia exerted by the stack of labels on the stack holders as the magazine (6) moves backwards, the controls having a detector that scans the series of articles to be labeled and actuates the controls and the holders (41, 42 or 45, 46) when it senses a condition calling for a label not to be applied, e.g. a missing bottle in the series, an improperly filled bottle or a different kind of bottle than it is desired to label.

A glue roller assembly for use in a labeling machine includes a drive shaft mounted rotatably in the machine frame and coupled with the machine drive by a transmission. A glue roller barrel is adjustable relative to the glue segments of the labeling machine and is mounted to permit radial adjustment thereof via a hollow shaft disposed substantially concentrically around the drive shaft of the glue roller and fixed to the machine frame. The barrel is coupled to the hollow shaft to permit the radial adjustment of the glue roller barrel with respect thereto and the glue roller barrel is coupled to the drive shaft in the circumferential direction.

In a labeling station for applying labels onto objects, having at least one pickup element mounted eccentrically on a rotatable carrier for movement about an axis, a gripper cylinder comprising a rotating carrier having eccentrically disposed gripping and pressing elements thereon, which elements are tangent to the circulation path of the pickup elements approximately in synchronism, the labels being transferred by the gripping and pressing elements to objects moved along a transport path, the part of the gripper cylinder which carries the pressing elements being eccentrically mounted on the gripper-cylinder shaft in such a way that the areas to be labeled of the objects are tangent to or slightly intersected by the path of rotation of the pressing elements, and the part carrying the pressing elements and the part carrying the gripping elements rotate with the same angular velocity, the improvement comprising means for adapting the rotative speed of the pressing elements to the path speed of the areas to be labeled of a first group of objects being conveyed along an arcuate path whose areas to be labeled are, in relation to the areas to be labeled of another group of objects being conveyed along an arcuate path, at a different distance from the gripper-cylinder axis including means for releasably replacing the part carrying the pressing elements with another part of a different diameter carrying pressing elements.

A support having a plurality of circularly arranged rotatable platforms for bottles includes a drive mechanism having a plane stationary cam plate and sensing elements for each platform in contact with the cam plate. The drive mechanism is mounted in the support and configured such that the same lever arm, sensing element and platform drive shaft can be utilized for both counterclockwise and clockwise rotation of the platform merely by the angular orientation of the drive mechanism with respect to the cam plate.

A device for the pressing of gummed labels or foils against objects which are moved along a straight or curved path, comprises one or more pressing elements disposed one behind the other and movably advanced in synchronism with the objects along a path that is convexly curved with respect to the first path. Each pressing element has a pliable pressure pad disposed at the level of the area which is to be provided with the foil and situated at varying distances from the pressing element. The pressure pad comprises a plurality of elements disposed side by side, which independently of one another exert a point or line pressure during the pressing action.

In a labeling machine including means for supplying labels to a pickup element supplied with adhesive, which element transfers the labels to a gripping cylinder, the improvement wherein such pickup element has a smooth convex take-up surface composed of a plurality of first areas spaced form one another by second areas, the first areas exhibiting good adhesion properties and the second areas being relatively non-adherent, whereby when an adhesive is applied to said surface it lays substantially exclusively on the good adhering areas while leaving the non-adherent areas substantially free of adhesive, whereby less adhesive is required. The adherent areas may be metal and the non-adherent areas polytetrafluoroethylene provided in recesses in the metal, the non-adherent areas being in the form of circles or stripes.

In a labeling station for applying labels one above the other onto objects, having at least one pickup element mounted eccentrically on a rotating carrier for movement about an axis, a gripper cylinder is provided having a rotating carrier having eccentrically disposed gripping and pressing element for the upper and lower labels, which elements are tangent to the circulation path of the pickup elements approximately in synchronism. The labels are transferred by the gripping and pressing elements to objects moved along a transport path, whose areas to be labeled are at different distances from the gripper cylinder axis. Synchronism between the upper or lower pressing elements and the upper and lower gripping elements and their respective areas to which the labels are to be applied is carried out by the upper or lower gripping elements and the upper and lower pressing elements being respectively disposed on separate carrier parts rotating at equal angular velocity and disposed one above the other and eccentrically to one another. The circulation path of the pressing elements is offset eccentrically from the circulation path of the gripper elements which is tangent to the circulation path of the pickup elements such that it is tangent to the movement path of the areas that are to be labeled and has a radius in which the path speeds of the pressing elements and the areas to be labeled are equal within the labeling range.

The labels are transferred by the gripping and pressing elements to objects moved along a transport path whose areas to be labeled are at different distances from the gripper cylinder axis. The carrier of the gripping and pressing elements comprises two parts disposed one over the other and eccentrically to one another, which carry upper and lower gripping and pressing elements at different radii and revolve at equal angular velocity. The circulation paths for the upper and lower gripping and pressing elements have in the labeling range a distance from one another which corresponds to the difference between the areas to be labeled on the objects.
