Method of manufacturing a thin-film magnetic head comprising an inductive transducing system. A non-magnetic, insulating material for forming a first insulation layer (,), on which an inductive transducing element (,) is formed, is deposited on a plane basic surface (,). Subsequently, a non-magnetic, insulating material for forming a second insulation layer (,) is deposited on the first insulation layer and the inductive transducing element formed thereon. Subsequently, material is removed in an area proximate to a head face (,) to be formed for forming an aperture extending through the first and the second insulation layer and reaching as far as the basic surface, whereafter a non-magnetic, insulating material for forming a gap layer (,) is deposited in the aperture. Subsequently, a soft-magnetic material for forming a first soft-magnetic layer is deposited on the gap layer, whereafter the soft-magnetic layer (,), as well as adjoining, uncovered layer parts of deposited non-magnetic, insulating material are planarized to form a plane surface. Subsequently, a soft-magnetic material is deposited on this surface for forming a second soft-magnetic layer (,) which, jointly with the first soft-magnetic layer, constitutes a magnetic flux guide (,).

A servosystem for controlling the position of a magnetic head with respect to the tracks of a magnetic recording medium which is relatively movable with respect to the head and has a plurality of juxtaposed tracks, including a read head for simultaneously reading information signals and servosignals stored in the tracks, the read head having a head face and a layer structure comprising parallel read units, each having a read gap and extending substantially transversely to the head face, the read gaps of two adjacent read units each extending between a magnetically conducting common pole terminating in the head face and an individual pole terminating in the head face.

A write head, particularly a buried servowrite head provided with a head face (21) having a longitudinal direction (L) along which a magnetic recording medium can be relatively moved with respect to the magnetic head, and a width direction (W) oriented transversely to the longitudinal direction. In order to write signals simultaneously in various tracks, the write head is provided with a structure having integrated, juxtaposed write units (25a; 25b) extending substantially transversely to the longitudinal direction and the width direction and each being provided with at least one write gap (27a; 27b). One write gap of the one write unit and one write gap of the other write unit of every two adjacent write units are situated in mutually different planes (P1; P2) which are oriented substantially transversely to the longitudinal direction.

A thin-film magnetic head (101) includes windings assembled from two levels (105, 106) having two electrically conducting layers (103, 104), each including a connecting track (107, 116) and a winding (110, 113). To reduce the electrical resistance, auxiliary tracks (130, 131) which are in contact with the connecting tracks and also form part of the layers extend parallel to the connecting tracks. Consequently, no additional manufacturing steps are required.

Method of manufacturing a magnetic head, in which a multilayer structure comprising a transducing system (11A) with electrically conducting connecting tracks (17a, 17b) and further comprising a head face sensor system (15a, 15b) with electrically conducting connecting tracks (17a, 17b; 19a, 19b) is formed on a substrate. A processing operation is performed for forming a head face (23), which operation is terminated on the basis of measurements performed on the head face sensor system. In order to obtain a simple pattern of connecting tracks which can easily be realized, a portion of one of the connecting tracks of the transducing system (11A) and a portion of one of the connecting tracks of the head face sensor system (15a, 15b) are formed as a common connecting track (17a), and a portion of a further one of the connecting tracks of the transducing system and at least a portion of a further one of the connecting tracks of the head face sensor system (15a, 15b) are formed as a further common connecting track (17b).

A magnetic head has a head face and a layered structure, comprising write elements (w1-w9), first connection faces (15) for the write elements and first connection elements (16) connecting the write elements to the first connection faces, as well as read elements (r1-r9), second connection faces (17a, 17b) for the read elements and second connection elements (18a, 18b) connecting the read elements to the second connection faces. The first connection faces for the write elements and the second connection faces for the read elements are coplanar, while, viewed spatially, the first connection faces and the second connection faces are arranged in groups. At least a row of first connection faces and at least a row of second connection faces can then be distinguished, while the rows are in alignment.

A system for recording and/or reproducing signals on a magnetic medium. The system comprises a tape cassette provided with a magnetic tape and an apparatus for cooperation with the tape cassette. The apparatus has a magnetic head comprising at least one magnetoresistive element having an easy axis of magnetization and a defined direction of magnetization extending at least substantially parallel to said axis. The system further comprises a reset cassette which can be loaded into the apparatus and which comprises a housing with a central opening for the passage of the magnetic tape and electronic means, arranged in the housing, for generating a non-alternating magnetic field at the location of the magnetic head when the reset cassette is present in the apparatus, which field has a direction similar to the defined direction of magnetization of the magnetoresistive element.

A thin-film magnetic head has a connecting tab (22), provided on a substrate (23) for the connection of an external connecting track (16). In the region of a central portion (21) of the connecting tab an auxiliary layer (26) is provided between the connecting tab (22) and the substrate (23), as a result of which the central portion (21) of the connecting tab is located at a larger distance from the substrate than coating portions (24) of a shielding layer (25). This provides a proper contact between the external connecting track (16) and the connecting tab (22), even if the external connecting track (16) is in not such a good position with respect to the connecting tab (22).
