Altering the interface of hydrocarbon-coated surfaces

Methods, microorganisms, and compositions are provided wherein oil reservoirs are inoculated with microorganisms belonging toclade 1 and medium including an electron acceptor. Thestrains grow in the oil reservoir to form plugging biofilms that reduce permeability in areas of subterranean formations thereby increasing sweep efficiency, and thereby enhancing oil recovery.

Disclosed herein is introduction of different nutrient solution formulations to a subterranean target site to prevent biofilm formation and biomass aggregation at the sand face of an injection well bore during MEOR or bioremediation processes. A first nutrient solution formulation supports growth of introduced microorganisms and a second nutrient solution formulation is used to promote biofilm formation to allow plugging of pores and channels in the subterranean target site, for MEOR or bioremediation.

A process is disclosed for the detection of an analyte utilizing a nucleic acid label as a reporter. The analyte is detected by the binding of at least two reporter conjugates, each conjugate comprising a member of a binding pair and a nucleic acid label. The binding of the reporter conjugates to the analyte facilitates the juxtaposition of the nucleic acid labels, forming a single nucleic acid amplicon. The amplicon may then be detected directly, or may be used as a template of the generation of amplification products. Detection of the analyte by this process significantly reduces assay background caused by non-specific reporter conjugate binding.
