The present invention is directed towards a thin, flat glass envelope having an enclosed, internal channel and a molded edge for affixing attachments directly to the glass envelope. Suitable attachments include filters, i.e., diffusion, polarizing, glare reducing, brightness enhancing, liquid crystal display screens and masking components. The channeled envelope has a front and a back surface laminated and integrated together to form a unitary body essentially free of any sealing materials. A lightweight, light-emitting device or low-pressure discharge lamp can be formed from this channeled envelope, suitable for employment in the fields of LCD backlighting, automotive lighting, and general lighting.

The present invention is directed to an apparatus and method for forming glass article from sheet glass. More specifically the apparatus comprises a mold, a plunger being cooperative alignment with the mold, wherein the mold and the plunger form a cavity exhibiting the shaped of the glass article, an outer trimmer for separating the glass article from the surrounding excess sheet glass, and an inner trimmer for forming the aperture in the glass article, and the method involves forming the aperture during the hot-forming process, therefore eliminating a post-formation step.

A plunger/ring apparatus for press-forming articles of glass, or other formable materials within a mold is disclosed. The disclosed plunger/ring apparatus is provided with a plurality of spring loaded segments which extend outwardly from the plunger to coact with engineered passageways located upon the inner wear surface of the ring to form a seal in the plunger/ring interface area in which air, but not the material to be press-formed, may pass to and from ambient upon press-forming the formable material. An alternative embodiment is also disclosed in which the engineered passageways are located upon the wear surfaces of the segments and with optional additional passages located upon the upper periphery of the plunger.

This invention contemplates a near net-shape method of making thin glass-ceramic articles possessing substantially uniform thickness and parallel opposing surfaces comprising the steps of: (a) heating the receiving and opposing molding surfaces of a mold to predetermined different temperatures; (b) bringing the receiving and opposing molding surfaces of the mold into close proximity to each other to press a delivered charge of molten glass to fill said mold, while thermally providing and maintaining a substantially parallel fit between the receiving and opposing surfaces of the mold, to achieve substantially uniform thickness in the pressed charge, (c) pressing the glass charge for a time sufficient to remove enough heat from the glass charge that the temperatures of the molding surfaces and the glass article surfaces are all nearly at equilibrium, wherein the press time and mold temperature differential combine to result in symmetric heat removal thereby causing all the aforementioned temperatures to reach equilibrium at nearly the same time, (d) removing the glass article from the mold; (e) covering the opposing surfaces of the glass article with a refractory insulating material; (f) heat treating the covered glass article at a temperature and for a time sufficient to cause the glass article to crystallize in situ to a glass-ceramic article; and (g) cooling the covered glass-ceramic article to room temperature and removing the covering therefrom.
