An apparatus and method for subsequent optimization of radiosurgery and radiotherapy is provided. The invention includes administering a metalloporphyrin to the patient, and then creating a 3-dimensional mapping of tissue through use of PET or SPECT. Malignant and pre-malignant tissue has an affinity for the metalloporphyrin. During treatment, real-time images are also provided which are compared to the previous 3-dimensional mapping. Creation of the real-time images is also achieved through PET or SPECT wherein a metalloporphyrin is administered to the patient. Total administration of radiation is calculated by summing radiation from the metalloporphyrins and from the radiosurgery/radiotherapy. The amount of radiation delivered by the metalloporphyrins and by the radiosurgery/radiotherapy are adjustable based on a patient's response to the dual delivery.

Method of optimizing radiosurgery and radiotherapy with metalloporphyrins

A method for treating arteriosclerotic lesions is provided wherein the method is characterized by administering a chemical compound to the patient, the compound being a porphyrin complexed with a radioactive metal. Cells which exhibit an affinity for the porphyrin element indicate sites of plaque buildup. The radioactive metal within the compound is cytotoxic to cells in and surrounding the plaque and may allow tomographic scanning of the plaque as well. The complexed compound can be introduced to the patient a desired number of times to provide the necessary radiation treatment and ongoing monitoring of plaque removal.

Method of using metaloporphyrins for treatment of arteriosclerotic lesions

A reduced area imaging device is provided for use in medical or dental instruments such as an endoscope. In a first embodiment of the endoscope, connections between imaging device elements and between a video display is achieved by hard-wired connections. In a second embodiment of the endoscope, wireless transmission is used for communications between imaging device components, and/or for transferring video ready signals to a video display. In one configuration of the imaging device, the image sensor is placed remote from the remaining circuitry. In another configuration, all of the circuitry to include the image sensor is placed in a stacked fashion at the same location. The entire imaging device can be placed at the distal tip of an endoscope. Alternatively, the image sensor can be placed remote from the remaining circuitry according to the first configuration, and control box is used which communicates with the image sensor and is placed remotely from the endoscope. Further alternatively, the imaging device can be incorporated in the housing of a standard medical camera which is adapted for use with traditional rod lens endoscopes. In any of the configurations or arrangements, the image sensor may be placed alone on a first circuit board, or timing and control circuits may be included on the first circuit board containing the image sensor. The timing and control circuits and one or more video processing boards can be placed adjacent the image sensor in a tubular portion of the endoscope, in other areas within the endoscope, in the control box, or in combinations of these location.

Reduced area imaging device incorporated within wireless endoscopic devices

A reduced area imaging device is provided for use with a communication device, such as a wireless/cellular phone. Various configurations of the imaging device are provided which locate the elements of the imaging device at desired locations. The communication device includes a miniature LCD-type monitor which displays not only images taken by the camera module, but also incoming video messages. The camera module may communicate with the housing of the communication device by wired connection, or wirelessly. The camera module is of such small size that it can be stored within the housing of the communication device. The camera module may be pointed at any object within sight of the user, without having to move the phone housing in order to take video images. Any acceptable wireless standard may be used for wireless communication between the camera module and the video telephone. One particularly advantageous wireless standard includes Bluetooth.

Communication devices incorporating reduced area imaging devices

A cancer screening method is provided, wherein the method is characterized by administering a compound to a patient, the compound being a complex of a fluorescent marker and a radioactive marker, in a dose emitting between 5 Gy and 20 Gy radiation. Cells are then collected preferably through non-invasive or minimally invasive means. If fluorescence is observed in the exfoliated cells, tomographic scanning is conducted to further locate and/or confirm suspected malignant areas or metastatic areas. Further observation or treatment may be conducted either through fluorescence guided endoscopy, photo-dynamic therapy, and/or radiation treatment.

Method of cancer screening primarily utilizing non-invasive cell collection, fluorescence detection techniques, and radio tracing detection techniques

A reduced area-imaging device is provided for use with a miniature hand-held computer referred to in the industry as a PDA. Various configurations of the imaging device are provided which position elements of the imaging device in desired locations. The PDA includes a miniature LCD-type video screen which can display not only images taken by the camera module, but also incoming video images. The camera module may communicate with the housing of the PDA either by a wired connection, or wirelessly. The camera module is small enough that it can be stored within the housing of the PDA. The camera module may be pointed at an object within sight of the user without having to move the PDA housing in order to take an image. Any acceptable wireless standard may be used for wireless communication between the camera module and the PDA. One particularly advantageous standard includes Bluetooth.

Hand-held computers incorporating reduced area imaging devices

A reduced area imaging device is provided which utilizes selected charge integration periods. Various configurations of the imaging device are provided which locate the elements of the imagine device at desired locations. Regardless of the particular arrangement or configuration of the imaging device, selected charge integration periods are incorporated. The imaging device can be defined as a CMOS-CID device wherein a user may select an appropriate integration period in order to enhance the viewed image to a desired level of brightness. Particularly in fluorescence guided endoscopy and fluorescence assisted surgery, the ability to vary and select particular charge integration periods improves these processes.

Reduced area imaging devices utilizing selected charge integration periods

A reduced area imaging device is provided for use with a communication device, such as a wireless/cellular phone. In one configuration of the imaging device, the image sensor is placed remote from the remaining image processing circuitry. In a second configuration, all of the image processing circuitry to include the image sensor is placed in a stacked fashion near the same location. In the first configuration, the entire imaging device can be placed at the distal end of a camera module. In a second configuration, the image sensor is remote from the remaining image processing circuitry wherein available space within the phone is used to house the remaining circuitry. In any of the embodiments, the image sensor may be placed alone on a first circuit board, or timing and control circuits may be included on the first circuit board containing the image sensor. One or more video processing boards can be stacked in a longitudinal fashion with respect to the first board, or the video processing boards may be placed within the housing of the communication device. The communication device includes a miniature LCD-type monitor which is capable of viewing not only the images taken by the camera module, but also can show incoming video images. The camera module is of such small size that it can be easily stored within the housing of the communication device, and may be attached thereto as by a small retractable cable. Having a tethered camera module allows it to be pointed at any desired object within sight of the user, and without having to actually point or move the phone housing in order to take an image.

Cells which exhibit an affinity for the porphyrin element indicate sites of plaque buildup. The radioactive portion within the compound allows tomographic scanning as well as simultaneous radiation treatment. The complexed compound can be introduced to the patient a desired number of times to provide the necessary radiation treatment and ongoing monitoring of plaque removal. Further observation or treatment may be conducted through a fluorescence guided endoscopic procedure.

The methods of cancer screening allow for a safe, reliable, inexpensive and minimally invasive diagnosis. Cells are first collected through non-invasive or minimally invasive means. The collected cells are stored in a cell culture media. A chemical compound such as 5-ALA is introduced to the cultured cells. The cells are incubated a period of time to allow interaction between the introduced chemical compound and the collected cells. The cells are then studied under a fluorescence microscope which emits a specific frequency of light matching the excitation frequency of fluorescing abnormal cells. Pre-malignant and malignant cells will fluoresce while normal healthy cells generally will not fluoresce. In lieu of or in addition to observing the cells by the fluorescence microscope, an imager may be used to observe the cells wherein the imager includes selectable and variable charge integration capability. Observable fluorescence can be maximized by selecting the appropriate integration period. If necessary, the collected cells may be passed through a flow cytometer to more easily identify the fluorescing cells. A presumptive diagnosis of cancer may be made based upon the presence or absence of fluorescing cells. If a cell sample is adequately concentrated, a cell sorter is not needed, and the cell sample may be adequately viewed under the fluorescence microscope. Specific techniques are disclosed for non-invasive and minimally invasive cell collection. Each of these techniques minimize patient trauma by not requiring forced tissue removal as occurs in traditional biopsy procedures. A method of fluorescence guided endoscopy is also disclosed utilizing an imager with variable charge integration capability.

Methods of cancer screening utilizing fluorescence detection techniques and selectable imager charge integration periods

In another embodiment, the imaging device can be incorporated in the housing of a standard medical camera which is adapted for use with traditional rod lens endoscopes. In yet another embodiment, the imaging device can be wholly incorporated within the endoscope by placing the image sensor and timing and control circuitry within the distal tip of the endoscope, and placing the remaining processing circuitry within the handle of the endoscope. In any of the embodiments, the image sensor may be placed alone on a first circuit board, or timing and control circuits may be included on the first circuit board containing the image sensor. One or more video processing boards can be stacked in a longitudinal fashion with respect to the first board, or the video processing boards may be placed in the control box or in the handle of the endoscope.
