Formable twistless woven precursor fabrics, especially in satin or basket weave, made from warp and weft flat tape of fiber reinforced thermoplastics on a power driven loom. The weft tape is supplied in a twistless manner from a rotatable package that is driven in synchronism with the feeding mechanism and a finite tension on the tape is maintained so that a line drawn parallel to the surface of and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of each of the warp and weft tapes is in the plane of the fabric throughout the fabric. The warp and weft tapes have edges that abut substantially throughout the fabric.

Method for producing a fabric made from thermoplastic melt impregnated

A fiber reinforced material is made by passing a preheated tensioned filament array over an arcuate extruder head where thermoplastic polymer is flowed through the filament array to expel air from the array while coating the filaments with polymer. The filaments comprise 50 to 75 percent by volume of the material and the polymer has a relative viscosity of at least 50.

A yarn finish applicator in which finish is metered to a slot running from top to bottom of the applicator. The configuration of the body of the applicator and its slot provides an edge at the exit end of the applicator and a slot that is slightly wider at the location at which finish is metered to the slot than at exit of the slot. Two rods are located just below the exit edge of the applicator to collect and drain to a receiver any drops of excess finish which form at the exit edge of the applicator when the threadline is not running.
