The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of submicron-sized polymer particles and micron-sized polymer beads, wherein the polymer particles or beads or both are functionalized with phosphorus acid groups. The composition of the present invention is useful for providing a matte finish on substrates, such as leather, textiles, wallboard, decorative coatings, concrete, and wood, with improved stain resistance. The present invention also relates to a leather substrate coated with a clear matte finish comprising an acrylic or styrene-acrylic polymer film and micron-sized polymer beads, wherein the film or the beads or both are functionalized with a phosphorus acid monomer.

The present invention is an above-critical coating composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles, pigment particles, and extender particles wherein the polymer particles comprise from 80 to 99.8 weight percent structural units of vinyl acetate and from 0.1 to 6 weight percent structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer. Aqueous multi-stage copolymer compositions for use in leather topcoats

The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of spheroidal particles having a mode particle size of from 10 to 30 &#x3bc;m. The spheroidal particles are useful as organic extenders, especially in below-critical pigmented coatings formulations, and provide coatings with improved stain removal properties.

The present invention relates to a coatings composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles, pigment particles, and extender particles. The polymer particles comprise from 35 to 99.8 weight percent structural units of vinyl acetate and from 0.1 to 6 weight percent structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer or a salt thereof, and the coating composition has a pigment volume concentration in the range of from 25 up to the critical pigment volume concentration of the composition.
