A bridge assembly is disclosed for use with an internal combustion engine. The bridge assembly may have a valve bridge, a cylindrical housing disposed within the valve bridge, and a plunger disposed in the cylindrical housing and protruding from the valve bridge. The bridge assembly may also have a valve housing, a post located inside the valve housing, a plurality of obliquely angled ports passing through a straight annular wall portion of the valve housing, and a plurality of radially oriented ports passing through a tapered annular wall portion of the housing. The bridge assembly may further have a valve seat disposed at least partially inside the plunger, a ball disposed within the valve housing and movable between a distal end of the post and the valve seat, a first spring disposed over the post, and a second spring disposed within the cylindrical housing.

A valve actuation system is disclosed for an engine. The system may have at least one gas exchange valve, a rocker shaft, a camshaft, a rocker arm connected to the rocker shaft and operatively engaged with the camshaft, a valve bridge engaged with the at least one gas exchanger valve, a lash adjuster disposed in the valve bridge, and a button configured to slide on the valve bridge. The system may further include a pin fluidly connecting the rocker arm to the button and having an elongated cylindrical shaft with a first open end inside the rocker arm and a second end inside the button. The pin may also have a head connected to and a reservoir formed in the elongated cylindrical shaft. The pin may further have passages extending from the bore of the rocker arm to the reservoir, and s passage extending from the reservoir through the head.

Valve actuation system having rocker-located hydraulic reservoir

A system and a method for actuating intake valves of an internal combustion engine. The system includes a hydraulic circuit including a master cylinder, a control valve, an accumulator, a first one-way valve and a slave cylinder. The slave cylinder accommodates a slave piston, which is coupled to the intake valves. The control valve is disposed upstream of the accumulator for controlling flow from the hydraulic circuit to the accumulator. The first one-way valve is disposed downstream of the accumulator for permitting flow from the accumulator to the hydraulic circuit and for preventing flow from the hydraulic circuit to the accumulator without first passing through the control valve. The control valve has an open position that provides communication between the hydraulic circuit and the accumulator for a Miller cycle or Miller-like cycle operation. The control valve also has a closed position that prevents communication between the hydraulic circuit and the accumulator during Otto cycle operation.

Rocker shaft shim

A hydraulic lash adjuster includes a body defining an axial bore and having an open end and a closed end. A hollow piston is telescopically received within the axial bore and defines a fluid reservoir. The hollow piston has a first end disposed within the axial bore and a second end extending outwardly beyond the open end of the body. A high pressure volume is defined by the axial bore and the first end of the hollow piston. The hydraulic lash adjuster also includes a valve mechanism positioned through an opening of the hollow piston and including a valve member having an open position defining a fluid path from the fluid reservoir to the high pressure volume. The valve member also has a closed position in which the fluid reservoir is fluidly blocked from the high pressure volume at the opening. The hollow piston includes a band of radial recirculation openings defining recirculation paths from the high pressure volume to the fluid reservoir along an exterior of the hollow piston. A diameter of each of the radial recirculation openings is smaller than a width of the band.

A method is disclosed for controlling compression-braking performance of an engine having a piston in a combustion cylinder. The method may include providing a valve in fluid communication with the combustion cylinder and at least one valve actuator operable to control the valve to perform compression-braking by opening the valve, which may include opening the valve to a first peak-valve-opening during a compression stroke of the piston and opening the valve to a second peak-valve-opening before a second half of an expansion stroke of the piston. The method may also include determining a target value for a stress in the at least one valve actuator. Additionally, the method may include designing the magnitude and timing of the first peak-valve-opening as a function of the target for the stress in the at least one valve actuator.

Compression-braking system

A valve bridge configured to engage an engine valve is disclosed. The valve bridge includes a bridge cavity formed within a center portion of the valve bridge and including a bottom surface. A hydraulic lash adjuster is slidably disposed within the bridge cavity.

A clamping assembly for clamping a fuel injector into a fuel injector bore located in cylinder head of an engine includes a housing having a housing opening, connectors coupling the housing to the cylinder head, and a compression spring. The compression spring is located in the housing opening, operably coupled to a top of the fuel injector, and axially aligned with a longitudinal axis of the fuel injector.

Fuel injector clamping assembly

A volume reducer for a hydraulic system, particularly useful for low pressure hydraulic systems such as used in engine compression braking systems. The hydraulic system has an actuator and a pressurizer, with a hydraulic line interconnecting the actuator and the pressurizer. A substantially straight section of the hydraulic line is provided, and a slidable body is provided in the substantially straight section. The body slides in the hydraulic line in response to pressure changes in the hydraulic line, and occupies hydraulic line volume, to stiffen the hydraulic system and reduce system sluggishness.
