A method for forming structural equipment employed in sulfur containing environments such as oil refineries and the like. In one embodiment, the method comprises: providing a steel composition containing up to 0.35% of C, 0.30 to 3.5% Si, up to 1.2% Mo, up to 1.35% Mn, up to 5% Al, less than 12.0% Cr, balance of Fe and unavoidable impurities; forming a structural component conforming to prevailing industry standards with respect to design, fabrication, inspection and testing, metallurgical and mechanical properties. The structural equipment has a corrosion rate of less than 15 mpy. In one embodiment, the equipment is formed from a steel composition has a carbon equivalent of less than 0.63, requiring no post weld heat treatment ('PWHT'). In another embodiment, the CE is less than 0.45, requiring no preheat nor PWHT.

Equipment for use in corrosive environments and methods for forming thereof

A method to prevent the accumulation of static electricity in a pipe system for containing corrosive petroleum products is provided, for a total resistance of less than 1 MEG ohms to ground from all points. The pipe system has at least two pipe sections, each comprising a structural layer and a corrosion resistant layer. The corrosion resistant layer has at least a conductive surface area in contact with the fluid, with the conductive surface area defining an electrical pathway extending a length of the pipe section. Each pipe section has a tapered end exposing a portion of the corrosion resistant layer. The method comprises joining the two pipe sections at the tapered ends by a conductive adhesive overlay, and electrically connecting the conductive adhesive overlay to a grounding device, wherein the grounding device helps dissipate build-up of electrostatic charge in the pipe system carrying the fluid.

Static dissipation in composite structural components

A structural component for use in oil, gas, exploration, refining and petrochemical applications in the form of a pipe system is provided. The pipe system contains at least two pipe sections are that fusion bonded together, each pipe section comprises a plurality of layers, an inner layer in contact with the corrosive petroleum product comprising a thermoplastic material, a structural layer comprising a composite material, and an outer layer comprising a fire resistive material. In one embodiment, the pipe system meets level II fire endurance standard according to IMO A 18/Res.753 fire testing protocol.

Structural components for oil, gas, exploration, refining and petrochemical applications

A method to form a pipe system which meets level II fire endurance standard according to IMO A 18/Res.753 fire testing protocol, for use in oil, gas, exploration, refining and petrochemical applications is provided. In the pipe system, each pipe section comprises a plurality of layers, an inner layer in contact with the corrosive petroleum product comprising a thermoplastic material, a structural layer comprising a composite material, and an outer layer comprising a fire resistive material. The method comprises applying energy to join the corrosion resistant layers of the separate pipe sections together forming a joint, applying an external wrap around the joint and at least a portion of the composite structural layers of the at least two pipe sections, and bonding the external wrap to the joint and the composite structural layers by chemical curing, thermal treatment, or combinations thereof.

Methods for joining pipe section in a pipe system containing corrosive petroleum products

A structural component system for containing a hot fluid, e.g., petroleum product, and methods to dissipate heat build-up in the structural component is disclosed. In one embodiment, the structural component is a composite pipe for carrying a hot fluid, e.g., petroleum products. The system comprises a protective sheath disposed around the structural component and forms an air space between the structural component and the sheath. The sheath has at least two gaps on its surface, with the gaps being sufficiently spaced apart to allow air flowing through the air space from one gap to another to dissipate heat build-up from the hot fluid contained within the structural component. In one embodiment, an intumescent material is applied near the gaps, which material expands when heated to a temperature in a fire to effectively close the gaps and protect the structural component from the fire.

Protective sheath for structural components

A method to improve corrosion, abrasion, and fire resistant properties of structural components for use in oil, gas, exploration, refining and petrochemical applications is provided. The structural component is suitable for as refinery and/or petrochemical process equipment and piping, include but are not limited to process vessels, transfer lines and process pipes, heat exchangers, cyclones, and distillation columns. The method comprises providing the structural component with a plurality of layers, a corrosion resistant layer in contact with the corrosive petroleum products comprising a material selected from amorphous metals, ceramic materials, or combinations thereof; a structural layer; and an outer layer comprising a fire resistive material. In one embodiment, the structural component is further provided with at least another layer selected from a metal sheeting layer, an adhesive layer, and a containment layer. The structural component is characterized as having excellent corrosion/abrasion/erosion properties and fire-resistant properties.
