A gas-liquid separator includes a fluid inlet, a shell including an inside surface enclosing an interior space, an outlet structure with fingers converging toward a longitudinal axis, and a dripper including a dripper tip. The fingers terminate at fingertips located proximate to an outside surface of the dripper. Gas exit ports are defined between adjacent fingers, and by the dripper. The gas-liquid separator defines a liquid flow path from the fluid inlet, along the inside surface, along one or more of the fingers, converging along the dripper outside surface, and to the dripper tip. The gas-liquid separator also defines a gas flow path from the fluid inlet, through the interior space, and through the gas exit ports. The gas-liquid separator may be utilized in fluid separation systems such as liquid chromatography or supercritical fluid chromatography/extraction systems.

Gas-liquid separator for collecting chromatographic fractions

A device is provided in a supercritical fluid system, which uses a mobile phase output by a separation device, the mobile phase volumetrically expanding as it decompresses. The device includes a passive splitter and a shuttle valve. The passive splitter is configured to receive the mobile phase and to split the mobile phase into a primary flow stream and a split flow stream, where the primary flow stream is directed to a pressure maintenance device. The passive splitter is further configured to reduce pressure of the split flow stream, causing volumetric expansion of the split flow stream. The shuttle valve is configured to insert volumetric aliquots of the volumetrically expanded split flow stream into a dilution flow stream to provide a diluted split flow stream, and to direct the diluted split flow stream to a low pressure detector.

Device and method of a supercritical fluid system for detecting analytes using a low pressure detector

An apparatus introduces a sample into a separation unit of a chromatography system with a mobile phase, including first and second mobile phase components. The apparatus includes first and second pump systems, and an injection unit. The first pump system provides the first mobile phase component, first and second portions of the first mobile phase component flowing through first and second branches, respectively. The second pump system provides the second mobile phase component, a first portion of the second mobile phase component flowing through a third branch. The injection unit receives a combined stream of the first portions of the first and second mobile phase components provided via the first and third branches, respectively, and injects the sample into the combined stream to form a sample-containing stream, which is subsequently combined with the second portion of the first mobile phase component to form a diluted sample-containing stream.

Apparatus and method for introducing a sample into a separation unit of a chromatography system

A separator (e.g. an impact centrifugal separator) is for use in collection of liquid portions of a bi-phasic flowstream in a supercritical fluid system. A separator chamber defines an interior space, surrounded by a spiral channel and that has an exit at a lower portion of the separator chamber. A flowstream director (e.g. an entry lube) focuses the flowstream so that the flowstream impacts a wail of the spiral channel at an angle that promotes coalescence of the liquid component. The spiral channel may promote further coalescence of the liquid portions within the constraining spiral channel after impact. A central director may be included in the interior space of the separator chamber to promote flow of the gaseous component toward the exit. A dripper may be included in fluid communication with the spiral channel, for example, in the exit and to direct the coalesced liquid into a collection vessel.

Impact centrifugal separator and associated methods for fraction collection in supercritical fluid systems

An apparatus, process, and system are disclosed that effectively provide separation of a combined gas/liquid flow stream into its separated gas and liquid factions. The invention is primarily directed to the fields of preparative supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), but will have other utilization and applicability where phases of dramatically different density, viscosity and volumetric flow require separation.

Self cleaning gas-liquid separator for serial or parallel collection of liquid fractions

A method and a system for introducing a sample into a mobile phase of a chromatography system is provided. The method includes initially directing the mobile phase directly into a separation unit of the chromatography system, bypassing a sample loop, the mobile phase including a combined solvent, metered from a pressurized first solvent and a second solvent; loading the sample into the sample loop, while the mobile phase continues to be directed directly into the separation unit; pressurizing the sample in the sample loop with the pressurized first solvent, while the mobile phase continues to be directed directly into the separation unit; and switching the sample loop into the mobile phase, thereby introducing the pressurized sample to the separation unit.

Apparatus and method for introducing sample into a separation unit of a chromatography system without disrupting a mobile phase

An apparatus, system, and process of converting a standard, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) flow path to a flow path suitable for supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) are described. This reversible technique is applied to a variety of flow configurations including binary, high pressure solvent mixing systems and quaternary, low pressure solvent mixing systems than can be conventionally operated or automated. The technique is generally applied to the fields of supercritical fluid chromatography and high pressure liquid chromatography, but users skilled in the art will find utility for any flow system where pressurization components must be periodically applied to and removed from both ends of a flow stream in an automated manner.

A device includes a gas-liquid separator that receives and separates a biphasic pressurized flow stream and delivers flow to at least one exit port enriched in vapor phase composition and at least one exit port enriched in liquid phase composition. The device further includes a low restriction inlet conduit in communication with the separator exit port enriched in liquid phase composition, and a positive displacement pump having an inlet port in communication with the inlet conduit to receive flow from the gas-liquid separator and an outlet port in communication with an outlet conduit.

A system and process for chromatography that uses a chromatography column to separate components from a sample received into the column in a mobile phase flowstream and places a second chromatography column between a detector and a collection system that compensates the timing of fraction collection for a delay caused by processing the collection signals generated by the detector. The device and process of the preferred and alternative embodiments add a delay into the flowstream of a chromatographic system, such as LC, HPLC, and SFC. Sample fractions are collected from sample component concentration peaks based upon the chromatographic elution of the sample components.

An invention is claimed that enables the pumping of compressible fluids at high pressures when an accurate flow is desired. Two pressure sources, for example pumps plumbed in series, separate thermodynamic work, such as pressurization, at the first pressure source from a volumetric or matter metering function in the second pressure source. One example is a flowstream delivery for a chemical instrumentation system that is manufactured from relatively unsophisticated pumps yet delivers precise flows with low pulsation (&#x3c;1%) over pressures greater than 100 bar. An advantage of one embodiment allows the economical conversion of typical HPLC systems to state of-the-art supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) systems with minimal modification to system components.

Compressible fluid pumping system for dynamically compensating compressible fluids over large pressure ranges

A depressurization process for a packed separation column is provided where the column system experiences a rapid and/or severe drop in pressure that could potentially damage column components. The process provides a safe de-pressurization of the column on the outlet side by decreasing the outlet pressure in controlled steps while allowing the inlet pressure of the column time to lower after each decreased step.

Method and apparatus are provided for peak identification of sample peaks in a chromatogram, wherein at least one group of standard peaks in standard peak series is matched to at least one group of sample peaks in a sample peak series so as to perform proper identification of the sample peaks in the sample peak group. In a preferred method, a succession of retention time windows are determined according to the characteristic retention times of the standard peaks and according to steps for determining shift, stretch, and distort parameters. The retention time windows are located with respect to the sample peak series and in accordance with the shift, stretch, and distort parameters so as to capture only certain ones of the sample peaks in the sample peak series. The shift, stretch, and distort parameters are used to position the retention time windows for improved matching of the standard peaks in the standard peak group to the captured sample peaks.

In the preferred embodiment, the invention is embodied in the pneumatic manifold of a gas chromatograph to provide current operating temperature and pressure compensation of inlet fluid flow. The pneumatic manifold comprises a plurality of thermally coupled mass flow, pressure and temperature sensors which generate signals related to mass flow of the fluid, fluid pressure and sensor temperature prior to the introduction of the fluid into the column. A plurality of firmware models which characterize the effects of current operating temperature and pressure variations on the mass flow and pressure sensors are stored in computer memory. Compensation is provided by determining the desired flow into the inlet, determining the control signal required to achieve this values at current operating conditions, determine the current operating conditions, implementation of firmware models to determine the effects on flow due to changes in current operating conditions and finally, generation of an adjustment to the control signal that nullifies the effects caused by changes in current operating conditions. These steps are repeated continuously to provide closed loop control of the desired detector conditions.

The effect of barometric pressure variation on the retention time stability of a chromatographic analytical system is compensated by active control of the amount of fluid flow by way of a fluid flow controller, preferably in the form of an electronic pressure control system. Control signals are derived by: receiving data representative of a desired operating condition parameter, such as column inlet pressure; sensing actual operating condition parameters such as inlet pressure p.sub.i and barometric pressure p.sub.atm ; determining a desired average linear velocity of the fluid flow according to the desired operating system parameter; determining an actual average linear velocity of the fluid flow according to the sensed plurality of actual operating condition parameters; and controlling, as a function of a predetermined relationship of the desired average linear velocity to the actual average linear velocity, the amount of fluid flow to cause the actual average linear velocity to substantially equal the desired average linear velocity.
