A system is disclosed for detecting an electrical sensor, the system includes a sensor signal processing circuit further comprising an input port to receive a connector including the output signal lines of the sensor, a resistor connected to the output signal line of said input port, wherein the resistor is connected to a predetermined voltage; a sensor circuit having a connector adapted to connect to the connector, wherein the sensor circuit has a resistance substantially less than the pull-resistor, and the sensor signal processing circuit detects an unconnected sensor based on the voltage applied by the resistor.

The gas mixing apparatus provides the components of a breathing gas for mixing at approximately ambient atmospheric pressure, and regulates the pressure of a selected gas to approximately ambient atmospheric pressure for mixing with air at ambient atmospheric pressure. The gas mixing apparatus includes a piston disposed within a pump chamber. A flow limiting inlet controls introduction of a first selected gas such as oxygen for mixing with a second selected gas such as air. The pressure of the first selected gas is limited to an acceptable maximum pressure, so that even if a valve for admitting the first selected gas for mixing at ambient pressure fails, breathing gas will not be provided at an excessive pressure. A demand valve is alternatively provided for reducing the pressure of the first selected gas supplied before mixing, but a pressure sensor is also provided downstream of the demand valve for detecting failure of the demand valve, to shut off the supply of the first selected gas to prevent overpressurization.

The piston ventilators include a double acting reciprocating piston, in which the piston motion delivering breathing gas to a patient receiving assistance from the ventilator simultaneously draws in breathing gas from a source of breathing gas, and a single acting piston ventilator, in which only the delivery end of the cylinder is provided with inlet and exhaust valves. In the double acting piston ventilator, breathing gas is supplied to both ends of the piston cylinder through two intake valves, and exhausting breathing gas through two exhaust valves. Both intake valves of the cylinder are ducted to the breathing gas supply, and the two exhaust valves of the cylinder are ducted to a gas delivery limb of the ventilator connected to the patient's airway.

A calibration method and apparatus capable of being calibrated according to the method that allows a remote sensor to be transferred from analyzing instrument to analyzing instrument within a group of analyzing instruments without the need to recalibrate. The device includes a separate memory capability associated with the sensor as well as each instrument while the method requires the use of an arbitrarily selected sensor to initially be transferred from instrument to instrument, while being subjected to the same calibration standards in order to generate calibration data for entry into each instrument's memory. With such data entered in the instruments' memories, any remote sensor, calibrated on any one instrument and having such calibration data stored in its own memory, can then readily be interconnected to any instrument of the group to immediately yield accurate results.

A method and system for simulating living tissue which is to be monitored by a pulse oximeter that provides red and infrared light flashes, the system including structure for: converting the red and infrared light flashes of the pulse oximeter into electrical signals; modulating the converted electrical signals to provide modulated electrical signals; and converting the modulated electrical signals to light flashes and transmitting the converted light flashes to the pulse oximeter for detection so that the pulse oximeter responds to the converted light flashes as it would to light flashes modulated by a living tissue.
