A system and method that enforces one or more policy rules on user-allocated bandwidth portions of the overall system bandwidth, for example in an optical fiber transmission system. The policy rules may limit, for example, the range of optical wavelengths, the acceptable range on the output-power-spectral density and/or the total per-band optical power within the user-allocated bandwidth that a user may provide on the system. The system may include one or more user control units that receives respective user output signals and applies all policy rules. The resulting optical output(s) of the UCU(s) may be provided an optical transmission path for transmission to a receiving terminal. In the receiving terminal, one or more UCU(s) may apply receiver policy rules, for instance by limiting the range of wavelengths transmitted to a receive subsystem. In addition, the system may be configured to dynamically add and/or remove loading signals to the transmitted signal in response to changes in loading of the user-allocated portions of the system bandwidth, e.g. through dropping or adding of channels by a user or by equipment failures.

System and method for applying system policies in an optical communication system having user-allocated bandwidth

In general, a branching configuration used in a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication system, consistent with the present disclosure, includes a power feed branching unit (PFBU) having a multi-port DC/DC converter (DDCM) arrangement capable of a plurality of operating modes to distribute power in a bi-directional manner. The DDCM arrangement may include a plurality of ports for electrically coupling to one or more trunk path cable segments and for electrically coupling to a branch cable segment. A plurality of PFBUs may be disposed along a trunk path, with each PFBU powering an associated branch path, without each branch path necessarily having local power feed equipment (PFE). In instances where a branch path includes a local PFE, an associated PFBU may draw power from the branch path in order to make power available to the trunk path as needed.

An optical communication system with a hierarchical branch configuration. The system includes first and second cable landing stations coupled to a trunk path in an optical cable. At least one hub-node is coupled to the trunk path through an associated hub-node branching unit. Sub-nodes are coupled the hub-nodes through associated sub-node branching units and sub-node paths in the optical cable. Sub-node signals may be communicated between the sub-nodes and the hub-nodes without being provided on the trunk path.

An optical communication system with a hierarchical branch configuration. The system includes first and second cable landing stations coupled to a trunk path in an optical cable. At least one hub-node is coupled to the trunk path through an associated hub-node branching unit. In an embodiment, mid-nodes are coupled the hub-nodes through associated mid-node branching units and mid-node paths in the optical cable. Mid-node signals may be communicated between the mid-nodes and the hub-nodes without being provided on the trunk path. Sub-nodes are coupled to at least one of the mid-nodes through associated sub-node branching units and sub-node paths in the optical cable. Sub-node signals may also be communicated between the sub-nodes and the mid-nodes without being provided on the trunk path or the mid-node path.

In one embodiment, a receiver for providing a virtual local channel in a broadcast radio system that transmits a plurality of sets of local content corresponding to a plurality of different geographic regions is disclosed. The receiver includes a detector (e.g.,), adapted to determine a regional identifier for the receiver. The receiver also includes a channel selector (e.g.,), adapted to obtain a selected set of local content from among the plurality of sets of local content, based on the determined regional identifier, for inclusion in the virtual local channel. The determined regional identifier identifies the geographic region associated with the selected set of local content.

In one embodiment, a integrated circuit (IC) configurable to have any one of a plurality of different feature sets, the IC including (a) one or more feature blocks adapted to be independently enabled or disabled, (b) a one-time-programmable (OTP) memory cell for each feature block, the OTP memory cell storing a value, and (c) a feature control module for each feature block, each feature control module connected between the corresponding OTP memory cell and the corresponding feature block, and adapted to enable or disable the corresponding feature block based on the value stored in the corresponding OTP memory cell. The OTP memory cells are programmed by a vendor to select the particular feature set for the IC which is to be available to a purchaser.

The present invention provides a broadcast retransmitter for use with a wireless local area network (WLAN). In one embodiment, the broadcast retransmitter includes a gateway configured to format a bitstream received from a broadcast receiver for delivery to a wireless access point (WAP) of the WLAN and subsequent conversion by the WAP into a wireless transmission over the WLAN to make the bitstream available for reception by a client of the WLAN.

A reset device is disclosed which may be used in electrical devices such as portable telephones. The reset device includes a source, such as a rechargeable battery, which provides an input voltage and a threshold voltage. The reset device also has a comparator with a first input which receives the input voltage and a second input which receives the threshold voltage. A voltage changing device varies the threshold voltage in response to the output level of the comparator and a rate of increase of the input voltage. The voltage changing device includes a capacitor which delays an increase of the threshold voltage when the input voltage increases. Further, the voltage changing device includes a positive feedback resistor for increasing the threshold voltage when the output level increases. Thus, the positive feedback resistor allows switching the threshold voltage from a first threshold level to a second threshold level when the output level switches from a low level to a high level. The reset device further includes a regulator which regulates the input voltage to provide the threshold voltage. In addition, a switch is connected to an output of the comparator for providing a reset signal to a load. Illustratively, a controller receives the reset signal and resets the load, e.g., the portable phone. In response to the reset signal, the controller switches the portable phone between a dormant mode and an active mode. In addition, the controller allows trickle charging of the rechargeable battery in the dormant mode and rapid charging in the active mode.

Reset device

A transceiver is disclosed for use in a wireless handset. The transceiver includes a switch for connecting an antenna, one at a time, to a receiver or to a transmitter. In a reception sub-frame, a limiting circuit switches the switch to an attenuated mode when an output signal of the receiver, such as a logarithmic RSSI signal, exceeds a predetermined value. The limiting circuit includes a comparator for comparing the logarithmic RSSI signal with the predetermined value. In addition, the limiting circuit also includes a transistor which shunts to ground a first control input of the switch when the RSSI signal exceeds the predetermined value. The limiting circuit further includes a shunt circuit to maintain the attenuated mode during a transmission sub-frame to reduce the level of a signal from the transmitter. The shunt circuit includes a trigger circuit for latching the output of the comparator to turn on another transistor which shunts to ground a second control input of the switch when the RSSI signal exceeds the predetermined value in the reception sub-frame, which is immediately prior to a current transmission sub-frame.

High power wireless telephone with over-voltage protection

An antenna for use with portable radio and telephone equipment includes a main radiator and a shield plate. One end of the shield plate is attached to the outer conductor of a coaxial cable abutting the shield plate. The main radiator is attached to the inner conductor of the coaxial cable a predetermined distance away from the shield plate. The main radiator and shield plate are mounted inside an antenna housing. The shield plate includes a head section having a pair of deformable tabs forming a positioning clip for holding the outer conductor of the coaxial cable. The inner conductor of the coaxial cable extends beyond the positioning clip for attachment to the main radiator.

In the rapid charging of a Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) battery, the rapid charging is terminated and trickle charging is initiated when any of three conditions is satisfied: a first condition determined by comparing a sensed instantaneous battery voltage with a target voltage; a second condition which is determined by comparing the instantaneous battery temperature with minimum and maximum values; and a third condition determined by comparing an elapsed time of rapid charging with a maximum value. Because battery voltage versus rapid charging time is a function of ambient temperature, the target voltage is determined from an initial measurement of battery temperature, which is assumed to equal the ambient temperature. The target voltage, which is approximately a linearly declining function of ambient temperature, is determined by reading a stored lookup table using the sensed temperature as an index or address.
