A control system for controlling automatic shifting of a manual/automatic transmission is disclosed including a cruise control system and an auto-shift mode for controlling automatic upshift and downshift operations between the top two gears of a heavy duty truck transmission. Certain failures of equipment or incorrect driving habits of operators are corrected for with algorithms which prevent undesirable operating conditions which compromise the acceptability of an electronically controlled heavy duty truck transmission equipped vehicle. The mechanism by which auto-shift operation of the transmission is requested is also compared with parameters such as vehicle speed and engine speed in order to determine whether gears should be engaged or disengaged, the gears being those subject to auto-shift control of the system controller.

Method and device for controlling critical switch failure and neutral

An engine control device for electronically controlling fuel injection of an engine is disclosed. The engine control device includes algorithms for instantaneously calculating fueling requirements in accordance with sensory inputs corresponding to engine operating conditions and throttle position. The fueling requirements are instantaneously reflected as modifications of the duration of fueling signals supplied to the fuel injectors, so that instantaneous fueling changes are effected. Fuel is conserved, and engine responsiveness improved in the current or presently occurring fuel injection cycle as a result of the immediate responsiveness of the engine control device operation.

A fuel distribution control for an internal combustion engine having a fuel control computer and fuel delivery means for delivering fuel to the engine in response to electrical signals. A signal generator generating first signals indicative of the incremental rotational velocity of the engine's output member resulting from the torque impulses imparted to the output member by the individual cylinders, averaging means for generating from said first signal an average rotational velocity signal, a circuit for generating a difference signal indicative of the difference between said first signals and said average rotational velocity signal, integrator means for individually accumulating said difference signals to generate a correction signal for each cylinder, means for averaging said correction signal to generate an average correction signal, means for summing said correction signal with the base fuel quantity signals generated by the fuel control computer to generate intermediate fuel quantity signals, and means for summing the correction signals to said intermediate fuel quantity signal to generate a corrected fuel quantity signal activating the fuel delivery means to deliver a quantity of fuel to each cylinder tending to equalize the contribution of each cylinder to the total output torque of the engine.

A phase angle detector for computing the phase angle of the individual impulses imparted to the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine having means for computing the sin and cos functions of each torque impulse in response to the instantaneous rotational velocity of the engine's crankshaft, means for detecting a change in the rotational velocity of the engine's crankshaft at the beginning and end of each torque impulse, means for correcting the value of the generated sin function as a function of the difference the crankshaft's rotational velocity at the beginning and end of the torque impulse, and means for computing the phase angle of the torque impulse from the cos and corrected sin functions.

A fuel distribution control system for an internal combustion engine including means for detecting the instantaneous rotational velocity of the engine's crankshaft to generate a torque impulse amplitude signal and a phase angle signal, an amplitude correction circuit for correcting the torque impulse amplitude signal as a function of the phase angle signal, means for generating an amplitude error signal for each corrected torque impulse, and means for accumulating said amplitude error signals to generate individual fuel correction signals for each engine cylinder. The fuel correction signals are added to the fuel quantity signals generated by a fuel control computer in response to the operational parameters of the engine and a fuel delivery device responds to the combined fuel quantity and fuel correction signals to deliver a quantity of fuel to each engine cylinder tending to equalize the torque contribution of each cylinder to the total output torque of the engine.

A fuel distribution control for the fuel control system of an internal combustion engine having a fuel control computer generating fuel delivery signals indicative of the engines fuel requirements, means for delivering fuel to the engine in response to said fuel delivery signals and means for generating amplitude signals indicative of the magnitudes of the torque impulses generated by the individual cylinders, the fuel distribution control comprising means for correcting the amplitude signals as a function of the cylinders position along the engine's crankshaft and engine speed, means for generating an average amplitude signal for each cylinder, means for generating an individual difference signal for each cylinder indicative of the difference between the average amplitude signal for the individual cylinders and the average amplitude of all the cylinders, means for generating a fuel correction for each individual cylinder from said difference signals, and means for summing the fuel correction signal with the fuel delivery to generate a corrected fuel delivery signal operative to equalize the contribution of each cylinder to the total output torque of the engine.

Fuel distribution control system for an internal combustion engine

A fuel distribution control system for equalizing the amplitude of the torque impulses imparted to the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine having a fuel control computer generating fuel quantity signals indicative of the engines fuel requirements, fuel delivery means delivering fuel to the engine in response to the fuel quantity signals and means responsive to the instantaneous rotational velocity of the engine's crankshaft for generating signals indicative of the amplitude and phase angle of the torque impulses imparted to the engine's crankshaft by the individual cylinder. The distribution control including means for correcting the amplitude signal for errors in the phase angle of the torque impulses, means for generating an amplitude error signal indicative of the difference between the corrected amplitude signal and a desired amplitude, means for storing the amplitude error signal generated with respect to each cylinder to generate fuel correction signals and means for summing the fuel correction signals to the fuel quantity signals.

A closed loop timing optimization control for an internal combustion engine closed about the instantaneous rotational velocity of the engine's crankshaft is disclosed herein. The optimization control computes from the instantaneous rotational velocity of the engine's crankshaft, a signal indicative of the angle at which the crankshaft has a maximum rotational velocity for the torque impulses imparted to the engine's crankshaft by the burning of an air/fuel mixture in each of the engine's combustion chambers and generates a timing correction signal for each of the engine's combustion chambers. The timing correction signals, applied to the engine timing control, modifies the time at which the ignition signal, injection signals or both are generated such that the rotational velocity of the engine's crankshaft has a maximum value at a predetermined angle for each torque impulse generated optimizing the conversion of the combustion energy to rotational torque.

These parameters are sensed and then supplied to input circuits for signal conditioning and conversion to digital words usable by the microprocessor. The microprocessor-based electronic engine control system computes a digital word indicative of a computer-commanded engine control operation and output circuitry responds to predetermined computer-generated commands and to the computed digital command words for converting them to corresponding pulse-width control signals or the like for controlling such engine operations as fuel-injection ignition timing, proportional and/or on-off EGR control, and the like.

The microprocessor system computes a digital word indicative of a computer-commanded engine control operation and output circuitry responds to predetermined computer-generated commands and to the computed digital command words for converting them to corresponding pulse-width control signals for controlling such engine operations as fuel-injection, ignition timing, proportional and/or on-off EGR control, and the like. A system is provided for sensing the immediate need for acceleration enrichment (by monitoring for an abrupt increase in manifold absolute pressure or throttle angle) and an interrupt request signal is sent to the microprocessor system which responds to the interrupt request to compute an acceleration enrichment digital word which the output circuitry uses to provide an immediate additional charge of fuel, and if a fuel charge is currently being applied at the time of the interrupt request, the additional acceleration enrichment fuel charge is applied immediately upon the completion of the normally-applied fuel charge.
