A fiducial on a backer of a flatbed scanner is used for determining a media size of a target scanned on the platen of the scanner. The fiducial is comprised of a plurality of symbols, either arranged in a predetermined pattern or randomly within a fiducial frame, and is placed at a predetermined location on the backer on the scanner lid. Each symbol has a finish that reflects light differently than a finish on the backer and has a high peak correlation value and a low off-peak correlation value when scanned. Image data from a scan of a target along with the backer is searched for the fiducial image. When the fiducial image is found, the media is selected to be of a first shorter length target type and, when the fiducial is not found, the target is selected to be of a second longer length target type.

A method for determining a media size of a target scanned on the platen of the flatbed scanner using a fiducial placed on a backer of the flatbed scanner at a predetermined location. The fiducial is comprised of a plurality of objects, either placed in a predetermined pattern or randomly within a fiducial frame. A target is placed on the platen of the flatbed scanner and scanned along with the backer. The scanned image data of the target and backer is searched for the fiducial image. When the fiducial image is found, the media is selected to be of a first target type having a first length, and, when the fiducial is not found the target is selected to be of a second target type have a second length longer than the first length.

The secured data is compared to data stored at the image forming device for verifying the identity of the image forming device. Each type of media has its printed sheets directed to a specific output bin. Printer communication system and method

An improved printer is provided in which one of the 'built-in' resident fonts can be effectively replaced by downloading from a host computer (into either Flash memory or the printer's hard disk drive) new or modified data under the same font descriptor as the built-in font. After the replacement font has been received by the printer and stored into a non-volatile memory storage device, the user can choose whether to use the replacement font or the built-in font for a particular document, by use of a printer setting named the 'Font Priority.' This Font Priority setting has the values of either 'Resident' or 'Flash/Disk.' When the Font Priority setting is set to 'Resident,' the printer preserves Adobe compatibility by having the PostScript interpreter search the virtual memory first to locate a font that is requested by a print job. If the particular font is found, no other font memory storage device is searched and the copy of the font reference in the virtual memory is selected. If the Font Priority is set to 'Flash/Disk,' the PostScript interpreter will still search for the requested font in virtual memory. However, if the interpreter finds that a resident font has been requested, then the non-volatile memory storage devices are searched for a replacement version of that font. If a replacement font is found, it is loaded into virtual memory and will now be used to print the document (instead of the original built-in resident font).

Method and apparatus for replacing or modifying a postscript built-in

A printing apparatus and method of use therefore are disclosed. The printing apparatus is usable as a replacement printer for replacing an existing printer apparatus without having to change printer drivers or make custom firmware changes in computers on a computer network. The inventive printer apparatus includes a map of source number assignments in the memory of the replacement printer apparatus for the replaced existing printer apparatus and for the replacement printer apparatus. The printing apparatus has a plurality of paper sources with each paper source being assigned a particular pre-assigned assignment code. The print request codes associated with the existing network printer being replaced must be determined. The print request codes are representative of a particular type of paper source. A map of print request codes which are sent by computers on the network for driving the existing printer are compared with the pre-assigned source number assignment of the replacement printer. If the pre-assigned source number assignment is different for any of the paper sources than the print request code, a user can change the source number assignment to agree with the print request code. These changes are placed into a table into the non-volatile memory of the printer, thereby creating a mapping of source number assignments for the new replacement printer, the old printer being replaced, and the custom firmware. The pre-assigned source number assignments can be changed using either NPA commands, the printing apparatus operations panel or using printer job language (PJL).

Printer (1) is provided with a mode to print forms without reference to or interruption of a host computer and with immediate printing of one or more of the forms. Page data for the forms is stored in flash memory (21) in a high level printer language.
