Knotter operation on a crop baler or the like is controlled electronically by a programmable electronic control unit. Rotary and/or linear electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic drive motors are utilized to drive the knotting components and are controlled by the electronic control unit.

Knotter mechanism for crop balers and the like

A powered square baler is operable to be powered by a prime mover to form a bale by compressing loose material. The powered square baler broadly includes a chassis, a plunger assembly, a flywheel, and a planetary gear train. The chassis includes a baler frame that presents a baling chamber to receive the loose material. The plunger assembly includes a reciprocating plunger head slidably mounted relative to the baler frame and operable to reciprocate into and out of the chamber and apply a compressive force to the loose material. The flywheel is rotatably mounted on the chassis and is operable to be driven by the prime mover. The planetary gear train is drivingly attached to the flywheel and is drivingly attached relative to the plunger assembly to transmit power between the flywheel and the plunger assembly and thereby drive the plunger head.

The vertically swingable header of a farm machine utilizes a flotation mechanism having a torsion bar as the source of lifting force. The torsion bar is mounted on the header rather than the base machine and is operably coupled with the base machine through loading apparatus that includes a cam and cam follower system. An alternative embodiment utilizes a cam track fixedly mounted on the base machine.

A hay baler provided with a tubular duct within which charges of crop material are prepared before being stuffed into the baling chamber has a windrow pickup device at its front end to lift crop materials off the ground as the baler advances. The effective operating width of the pickup is wider than the inlet to the duct so that the stream of crop materials lifted off the ground must be converged centrally into alignment with the inlet before entering the same. A pair of lower stub augers on opposite sides of the inlet are assisted by a pair of upper stub augers rotating in opposite directions relative to the lower augers to accomplish such convergence. A windguard overlies the incoming crop flow as well as the consolidation zone between left and right sets of the stub augers so as to maintain effective control over the flow at all times.

A wide pickup header on the baler picks up windrows that are signficantly wider than the centrally disposed inlet of a passage containing cutter apparatus that reduces the materials into smaller pieces for compaction into a bale. In order to provide smooth, even, continuous flow of crop materials into and through the cutter apparatus at the inlet, the pickup is provided with a pair of lower, upturning stub augers on opposite sides of the inlet and a full length, downturning top auger spaced above and somewhat forwardly of the stub augers. The top auger not only assists the stub augers in consolidating the wide windrow of materials in toward the center of the machine but also keeps the stream fairly low and concentrated at a level where the stream is readily accepted by the rotary cutter apparatus. Preferably, the top auger maintains the inflowing crop stream below the axis of rotation of the cutter rotor so that prongs of the rotor engage the crop material as the prongs are rotating downwardly and rearwardly through the inlet and into the cutting zone. Preferably, the top auger rotates considerably faster than the stub augers and consolidates materials at a faster rate than the stub augers.

The dog clutch for a square baler is normally retained in a disengaged position as a continuously driven sprocket rotates around it during baling operations. When a retainer for the dog is released, the dog is released by the retainer and flips out to an engaged position so as to be driven through one knotter revolution by a driving lug on the rotating sprocket, whereupon it is reset by the retainer into its disengaged position. An external lobe on the rotating sprocket blocks releasing movement of the retainer if the driving lug of the sprocket is in the immediate vicinity of the dog, which could otherwise cause an insecure engagement of the lug with the dog. The dog-engaging seat on the retainer is spring-loaded to provide yieldable relief in the event binding starts to occur between the retainer and the dog.

A square baler has a generally horizontally disposed baling chamber, a reciprocating plunger within the chamber, and an underslung loading duct projecting downwardly and forwardly from the bottom of the chamber to a pickup apparatus. A stuffer is operable through successive stuffing strokes within the duct to both transfer material from the pickup apparatus into the baling chamber and precompress the material within the duct. The stuffer includes a pair of fore-and-aft mutually spaced apart forks presenting a leading fork and a trailing fork with respect to the direction of travel of the stuffer during a stuffing stroke. The leading fork has a generally kidney-shaped path of travel that begins its upstroke rearwardly of the forwardly facing inlet of the duct, while the trailing fork has a generally kidney-shaped path of travel that begins its upstroke forwardly of the inlet of the duct. The stuffer is operable in timed relationship with the plunger so that the leading fork precompresses a charge of material against the bottom of the plunger as it is retracting and then stuffs the precompressed charge into the chamber when the plunger is sufficiently retracted. The trailing fork, on the other hand, sweeps new material into the inlet of the duct and advances it up to the bottom of the plunger path of travel as the leading fork carries out and completes its stuffing stroke. The trailing fork is narrower than the leading fork, providing room for center-gathering stub augers to deliver materials from the pickup to an inboard position generally under the center prongs of the trailing fork.

The in-line baler has its crop pickup, baling chamber and compacting plunger all located on the same fore-and-aft axis as viewed in top plan, but the tongue of the baler can be selectively swung by a hydraulic cylinder from a centered position to an offset position so that the baler may be correspondingly operated either directly behind the towing vehicle or off to one side as desired by the operator. To compensate for an otherwise excessive weight transfer onto the outboard ground wheel when the baler is shifted to the offset location, the onboard internal combustion engine and other drive apparatus for the operating components of the baler are all located off to one side of the center line of the machine, i.e., toward the inboard ground wheel. The pivot point for the tongue is located forwardly of the transverse axis of the ground wheels and slightly to the inboard side of the central axis of the baler, between the pickup and the overhead baling chamber.

A bale chamber 22 includes a pair of elongated top rails 72,74, a pair of elongated bottom rails 80,82, an elongated right siderail 80, an elongated left siderail 90, and a squeeze mechanism 24 positioned proximate the discharge end of the bale chamber 22 for symmetrically adjusting the cross-section size of the discharge opening by simultaneous movement of all the rails. The squeeze mechanism 24 includes a vertical squeeze assembly 92 for adjusting the vertical distance between the top and bottom rails 72,74,80,82 and a horizontal squeeze assembly 94 for adjusting the horizontal distance between the left and right siderails 88,90. Each squeeze assembly 92,94 includes a jaw-type lever assembly 96,116 surrounding its respective rails and a cylinder assembly 98,118 that selectively shifts its lever assembly 96,116 and its respective rails towards and away from one another near the discharge end of the bale chamber 22.

The reciprocating plunger of the baler has needle slots in its crop-engaging face from which accumulating crop materials are ejected during each retraction stroke of the plunger by stationary, horizontally extending probes telestationary, horizontally extending probes telescopically received by the plunger. Consequently, the slots are maintained clear of any debris which would otherwise interfere with the smooth, trouble-free operation of tying needles of the baler as they periodically sweep across the bale chamber and through the needle slots at certain, preselected intervals in the baling cycle. The crop expelling probes are hollow and open along their lowermost extremities to permit the admission thereinto without interference of crop feeding fingers which introduce successive charges of crop materials up into the bale chamber from a loading duct below the latter in timed relationship with reciprocation of the plunger.

The squeeze cylinder is inverted with the cylinder casing attached to a transverse, overhead truss above the bale case and the piston rod projecting downwardly from the casing for attachment to the upper squeeze plate of the apparatus. Oil is supplied to the cylinder on the upper side of the piston, while the lower, vented side of the piston is open to the atmosphere via a vent/drain passage. The lower end of the cylinder is provided with a lowermost, annular shoulder bearing against the lower side of the supporting truss and with a snap ring on the opposite, upper side of the truss so that the shoulder and the snap ring cooperate to securely and readily secure the cylinder assembly in operating position.
