Rangeless failover in Passive Optical Network (PON) protection switching is implemented by an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) that includes a transmitter configured to connect a plurality of Optical Network Units (ONUs) on a downstream channel; a receiver configured to connect the plurality of ONUs on an upstream channel; and circuitry communicatively coupled to the transmitter and the receiver, wherein the circuitry is configured to, responsive to protection switch from a primary OLT, enable the transmitter on the downstream channel, and utilize a Dynamic Bandwidth Assignment (DBA) function on the downstream channel with a guard time that includes a normal guard time plus a differential time added thereto. The guard time is larger than a guard time used by the primary OLT prior to the protection switch. The differential time can be based on a differential between a closest ONU and farthest ONU, relative to the primary OLT, prior to the protection switch.

One embodiment provides a system and method for monitoring performance of a network. During operation, in response to receiving a performance-monitoring request, the system can select a plurality of network devices along an end-to-end path from an application server to a terminal device and configure each selected network device to function as an observation point to obtain flow-specific packet information. The system can receive, from each observation point, the flow-specific packet information and aggregate flow-specific packet information received from multiple observation points to obtain performance data associated with one or more segments along the end-to-end path, each segment being defined by a pair of observation points.

Method and system for network segment performance monitoring

One embodiment provides a system and method for automatic discovery and configuration of tunnel endpoints in a network. During operation, the system can broadcast, from an active tunnel endpoint, a peer-discovery-request message to the network. In response to receiving a peer-discovery-response message from a passive tunnel endpoint, the system can determine whether the passive tunnel endpoint has a tunnel based on the received peer-discovery response. In response to determining that the passive tunnel endpoint does not have a tunnel, the system creates a tunnel between the active tunnel endpoint and the passive tunnel endpoint and exchanges tunnel-configuration messages over the created tunnel.

One embodiment provides a pluggable optical line terminal (OLT) in a passive optical network (PON). The size (number of sub-carriers) of each of the channels can be configured according to embodiments based on the available spectrum and/or other requirements (e.g., EPoC emission requirements, existing services, etc.). Further, within each channel, individual sub-carriers can be configured independently, including turning each sub-carrier on/off and/or specifying the symbol bit loading for the sub-carrier independently of other sub-carriers in the channel.

A PHY auto-negotiation and link up procedure for Ethernet Passive Optical Network Over Coax (EPOC) is provided. The procedure is compliant with the Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) standard and can be used to bring an EPOC network to user traffic readiness. Embodiments include systems and methods for enabling a physical layer (PHY) link signaling channel between a network termination modem and a cable modem in a cable network. The PHY link signaling channel is embedded within the same multi-carrier channel as the data and enables PHY link up between the network termination modem and cable modern without involvement of higher layers (e.g., MAC). The PHY link signaling channel can be implemented in the downstream (from the network termination modem to the cable modem(s)) or in the upstream from a cable modem to the network termination modem. Embodiments are applicable to any known cable network, and particularly to cable networks implementing the DOCSIS and EPoC standards.

Physical layer (PHY) link signaling for cable networks

Embodiments enable a network operator to use any (and a single) network management system (NMS) that it desires to manage a network having mixed fiber to the home optical network units (ONUs) and coaxial connected cable modems. For example, embodiments enable a cable company operator to use a DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) NMS (which the cable company already uses to manage its DOCSIS network) to manage such mixed network, by a simple addition of a DOCSIS Mediation Layer (DML) module between the NMS and the optical line terminal (OLT). One embodiment of the present invention provides an optical line terminal (OLT) in an Ethernet passive optical network (EPON). The OLT includes a number of bi-directional optical transceivers. At least one bi-directional optical transceiver is coupled to an optical network unit (ONU) group that includes a number of ONUs. The OLT further includes a first downstream media access control (MAC) interface configured to provide a first downstream control signal and a splitter configured to split the first downstream control signal to a number of sub-signals. Method and apparatus for link sharing among multiple EPONs

One embodiment provides an optical line terminal (OLT) module in a network device. The OLT module includes an optical signal module, an OLT management module, a scheduler module, and a forwarding module. The optical signal module transmits optical signals to and receives optical signals from a number of optical network units (ONUs). During operation, the OLT management module identifies a remote OLT module operating at a lower upstream data rate than the OLT module. The scheduler module identifies a report message received from a first ONU operating at the lower upstream data rate and generates a grant corresponding to the report message. A grant specifies a time slot for an upstream data burst. The scheduler module includes the grant in a notification frame destined for the remote OLT module. The forwarding module forwards the notification frame to an internal switch of the network device.
