An improved hydrocarbon tolerant, aerosol hair spray resin composition includes a fixative polymer which is a tetrapolymer consisting essentially of (1) vinyl acetate, (2) vinyl neodecanoate or vinyl neononanoate, (3) monoisobutyl maleate and (4) N-t-butyl acrylamide, N-t-octyl acrylamide, or isobornyl (meth)acrylate, in a molar ratio from 10:10:15:1 to 26:1:15:1, preferably in a molar ratio of 12.5:7.5:15:1, exhibits advantageous small spray particle size, short tack and drying times, and hydrolytic stability, which are the desired performance characteristics on hair.

What is provided herein is an improved hair spray resin composition including a terpolymer consisting essentially of a vinyl ester, preferably vinyl acetate, a water-insoluble or water-miscible alkyl maleate half-ester, preferably mono-N-butyl maleate and an N-substituted acrylamide, preferably N-t-butyl acrylamide, N-t-octyl acrylamide or N-[1-(2-pyrrolidonyl)ethyl]acrylamide, in the molar ratio of 1:0.6-0.8:0.08-0.12, respectively, and having a relative viscosity of about 1.2-2.0.

A hair spray composition is provided herein which is capable of delivering a fine finishing mist at a high resin solids level. The composition is substantially moisture resistant, provides a stiff resin film having excellent hair holding power, and has a relatively low concentration of volatile organic compounds therein. The composition of the invention attains its unique attributes by including therein a water soluble or dispersible alkylated polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) copolymer powders having a predetermined blend of two monomer components, one being PVP having a defined molecular weight (K-value 15-120, preferably 30-90) and concentration (80-99%, preferably 90-95%) and the other being an alkylene having a selected number of carbon atoms (C.sub.4 -C.sub.10, preferably (C.sub.6 -C.sub.8), linear or branched, in a defined concentration (1-20%, preferably 5-10%).

A hair spray fixative resin comprises a vinyl acetate/alkyl maleate half ester/N-substituted acrylamide terpolymer in a molar ratio of about 1.0 to 0.6-0.8 to 0.08-0.12, which is preferably produced by a suspension or solution polymerization process. Utilizing N-substituted acrylamides in place of isoborneol methacrylates in the terpolymer provides superior holding power over conventional hair fixative resins, at lower cost.

What is described herein is a high water content hair spray composition which forms uniform, fine spray patterns having rapid drying characteristics and which provides excellent curl retention, and reduced curl droop properties. These results are achieved herein by incorporating a surface active agent or agents into the hair spray composition which agent or agents substantially decreases the surface or interfacial tension of the hydroalcoholic phase of the composition during use. The decreased surface tension of the water-based composition along the length of the hair shaft enhances its spreading tendencies so that substantially no droplets can form upon application of the composition of the hair. The surface active agent preferably is a surface lactive lactam; and, most preferably an N-alkyl pyrrolidone, where the alkyl group is a C.sub.4 -C.sub.22, branched or linear, alkyl group.

A hair spray resin compositon is provided herein which is capable of delivering a fine finishing mist at a high resin solids level. The composition is substantially moisture resistant, provides a stiff resin film having excellent hair holding power, and has a relatively low concentration of volatile organic compounds therein. The composition of the invention attains its unique attributes by including a predetermined blend of at least two hair spray resins, one being a relatively high molecular weight resin, and the other resin having a relatively low molecular weight. The latter resin is present in the composition in a substantially greater proportion than the higher molecular weight resin.

Non-aerosol pump hair spray compositions herein are applied as a fine spray mist, without nozzle clogging, and dried rapidly, to provide superior hair holding power. The compositions includes a hair fixative resin which is a terpolymer of a vinyl ester, an alkyl maleate half ester, and an acrylate ester of a saturated, hydroxylated bicyclic hydrocarbon, in an amount between 6 and 20% solids, and at a relative viscosity of from 1.10 to below 1.30.

Non-aerosol pump spray compositions

Non-aerosol pump hair spray compositions herein are applied as a fine spray mist, without nozzle clogging, and dried rapidly, to provide superior hair holding power. The compositions includes a hair fixative resin which is a copolymer of maleic anhydride and an alkyl vinyl ether, and the ethyl and butyl half-esters thereof, in an amount of between 6 and 20% solids. In suitable embodiments of the invention, the resin is the C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkyl half-ester of maleic anhydride and C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl vinyl ether having a relative viscosity of about 1.20 to 1.35 (1% in ethanol).
