An extrudate comprising an inorganic oxide and a comb-branched polymer is disclosed. The calcined extrudates are useful catalysts or catalyst supports. A palladium-gold catalyst prepared with a calcined titania extrudate of the invention is useful in making vinyl acetate from ethylene, acetic acid, and oxygen or oxygen-containing gas. A calcined transition metal zeolite extrudate of the invention is used as a catalyst in oxidizing organic compounds with hydrogen peroxide. Incorporation of a comb-branched polymer improves the mechanical properties of inorganic oxide extrudates.

Inorganic oxide extrudates

A catalyst comprising a transition metal zeolite and a noble metal is disclosed. The catalyst is prepared by an extrusion method using a comb-branched polymer as an extrusion aid. The catalyst is used in a reaction to produce epoxide from an olefin, hydrogen, and oxygen. The comb-branched polymer improves the mechanical properties of the extrudate.

Direct epoxidation process

A comb-branched polymer is disclosed. The polymer comprises recurring units of an unsaturated carboxylic monomer, an oxypropylene-rich poly(oxyethylene-oxypropylene) macromonomer and an oxyethylene-rich poly(oxyethylene-oxypropylene) macromonomer. The comb-branched polymer can be used as a water reducing agent in cement. It gives significantly lower air entrainment in cement admixture.

Preparation of comb-branched polymers

The present invention relates to polyolefin compositions that incorporate an acrylic/polyether comb-branched copolymer, articles made from the compositions, such as polyolefin films and polyolefin fibers, and methods for making the compositions and the articles.

Polyolefin compositions

A continuous process for making a comb-branched copolymer of an acrylic monomer and a polyether macromonomer is disclosed. The process is performed by continuously feeding a reaction zone with a monomer stream that contains an acrylic acid and a polyether macromonomer, and an initiator stream. The comb-branched copolymer made thereby performs better as water reducing agent in cement compared to that made by a batch process.

Process for preparing comb-branched polymers

Unique, well defined macromonomers containing hydroxyl-functionality, unsaturation-functionality, and polyoxyalkylene segments are prepared by oxyalkylating an unsaturated initiator molecule having at least one oxyalkylatable hydrogen in the presence of an effective amount of a double metal cyanide complex catalyst, optionally, when necessary, in the presence of a free radical polymerization inhibitor. The resulting unsaturated macromonomers are eminently suitable for such uses as copolymerization with ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing carboxylic acid-based groups such as acrylic acid to form effective superplasticizers and water reducers for cement and concrete applications.

Copolymers useful as cement additives and a process for their preparation

Substances useful as water reducing and superplasticizer additives for cement compositions are formed by in situ polymerization of one or more ethylenically unsaturated acid monomers such as acrylic acid or maleic anhydride in a reaction medium comprising a polyether such as polypropylene glycol or a copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide to form a carboxylic acid polymer, followed by reaction of the polyether and carboxylic acid polymer. The composition and properties of the resulting additives may be readily varied as desired through the use of different acid monomers, polyethers, reaction conditions, reagent proportions and the like.

Method of making a water reducing additive for cement

A cement admixture comprised of a mixture of certain alkyl ether oxyalkylene adducts with certain oxyalkylene glycols to provide cement compositions of mortar and concrete which inhibit drying shrinkage while permitting substantial air entrainment and enhanced compressive strength.

Cement composition

Polyethers of polyhydric compounds are prepared by the liquid phase reaction of polyhydric compound and the reaction being carried out with separate liquid phases comprised of a polar polyhydric compound phase and an organic polyether containing phase.

Poly ether preparation

There is provided a cement composition having improved fluidity comprising cement and an addition copolymer of (a) an adduct of a polyether polyol and an ethylenically unsaturated isocyanate with (b) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid.

Monoalkyl glycol ether is separated from dialkyl glycol ether by phase separation using a hydrocarbon solvent, preferably with the addition also of water.

Separation of monoethers from diethers

Substances useful as water reducing and superplasticizer additives for cement compositions are formed by reaction of carboxylic acid polymers with a mixture of monofunctional and difunctional polyethers derived from C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 epoxides wherein partial cleavage of the polyethers and esterification of the polyethers and the cleavage products thereof by the other reactant are achieved. In one embodiment, a sulfonic acid is used to catalyze the reaction of poly(acrylic acid), a monofunctional ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer, and a difunctional poly(propylene glycol), at a temperature in excess of 140.degree. C.

Cement additives

Substances useful as water reducing and superplasticizer additives for cement compositions are formed by reaction of carboxylic acid polymers with polyethers of C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 epoxides wherein partial cleavage of the polyether and esterification of the polyether and the cleavage products thereof by the other reactant are achieved. In one embodiment, a sulfonic acid is used to catalyze the reaction of poly(acrylic acid) and a monofunctional ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer at a temperature in excess of 140.degree. C.
