A method includes providing electric power to an exhaust aftertreatment system component, where the exhaust aftertreatment system component is one of a particulate filter and an electrically heated catalyst. The method includes obtaining an impedance value of the exhaust aftertreatment system component in response to providing the electric power. The method includes determining a structural state of the exhaust aftertreatment system component based on the impedance value.

Systems and methods for detecting structural and operational states of a component of an exhaust aftertreatment system

A method includes providing electric power to an electrically heated catalyst of an exhaust aftertreatment system. The method includes obtaining an impedance value of the electrically heated catalyst in response to providing the electric power. The method includes determining an oxygen storage capacity of the electrically heated catalyst based on the impedance value.

Methods and systems for detecting an impedance of a catalytic converter

A system for particulate filter regeneration includes a pre-converter universal heated exhaust gas oxygen (UHEGO) sensor disposed upstream from a three-way catalytic (TWC) converter and a particulate filter (PF), and a post-converter UHEGO sensor disposed downstream from the TWC converter and upstream from the PF. An engine controller for an internal combustion engine (ICE) and in communication with the pre-converter UHEGO sensor and the post-converter UHEGO sensor is included. The engine controller is configured to determine an amount of particulate mass accumulated in the PF during operation of the ICE and deactivate at least one of a plurality of cylinders of the ICE such that a deactivated cylinder intake air (DCIA) pass-through volume flows through the at least one deactivated cylinder and into the TWC converter and the PF. The DCIA pass-through volume is a function of the determined amount of particulate mass accumulated in the PF.

Dual UHEGO control of particulate filter regeneration

A method includes determining an amount of particulate mass in a particulate filter of an exhaust aftertreatment system. The method includes, when the amount of particulate mass in the particulate filter is greater than a threshold particulate mass value, receiving engine state information, providing electric power to the particulate filter, and obtaining an impedance value of the particulate filter in response to providing the electric power. The method includes, when the amount of particulate mass in the particulate filter is greater than a threshold particulate mass value, determining a temperature of the particulate filter based on the impedance value, and adjusting a magnitude of the electric power in response to at least one of (i) the temperature of the particulate filter satisfying one or more temperature metrics and (ii) the engine state information satisfying one or more engine state metrics.

Systems and methods for monitoring a temperature of a particulate filter of an exhaust aftertreatment system

A system for enhancing internal combustion engine (ICE) exhaust gas aftertreatment includes a first universal heated exhaust gas oxygen (UHEGO) sensor disposed upstream from a first three-way catalytic (TWC) converter and a second UHEGO sensor disposed downstream from the first TWC converter and upstream from a second TWC converter. An engine controller for an ICE is included and is in communication with the first UHEGO sensor and the second UHEGO sensor. The engine controller is configured to monitor and estimate a current oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of the first TWC converter and adjust at least one target exhaust gas lambda parameter as a function of the current OSC of the first TWC converter such that compensation for degradation of the first TWC converter over time is provided.

UHEGO control to mitigate threshold catalyst losses

A system for regeneration of a particulate filter in a V-pipe exhaust system includes a pair of post-converter universal heated exhaust gas oxygen (UHEGO) sensors disposed at a pair of pipes of the V-pipe exhaust system downstream from a pair of three-way catalytic (TWC) converters and the pair of post-converter UHEGO sensors measure lambda values. The system also includes an engine controller in communication with the pair of post-converter UHEGO sensors. The engine controller is configured to receive and compare measured lambda values from the pair of post-converter UHEGO sensors to a target exhaust gas lambda value for exhaust gas flowing into the particulate filter and provide at least one adjusted target exhaust gas lambda value as a function of a difference between the measured lambda values and the target exhaust gas lambda value.

System and method for particulate filter regeneration

A vehicle includes a variable displacement engine and a controller. The variable displacement engine has a plurality of cylinders and is configured to operate at a commanded air-fuel ratio. The controller is programmed to, in response to a command to perform a diagnostic test, operate the engine such that each of the cylinders is shut down for a portion of the diagnostic test while one or more of the remainder of the cylinders remain operating. The controller is further programmed to, in response to a deviation from the commanded air-fuel ratio exceeding a threshold while a first of the cylinders is shut down during the diagnostic test and a subsequent command to decrease the number of operating cylinders, shut down one or more of the plurality of cylinders other than the first of the cylinders.

Control system for variable displacement engine

An exhaust system includes a catalytic converter, a particulate filter, a first sensor, and a second sensor. The particulate filter is disposed downstream of the catalytic converter. The first sensor is disposed upstream of the catalytic converter and provides an output identifying a quantity of oxygen in an exhaust flow. The second sensor is disposed downstream of the catalytic converter and upstream of the particulate filter and provides an output identifying a quantity of oxygen in the exhaust flow exiting the catalytic converter.

Emission control system

A vehicle includes a variable displacement engine, a conduit, a sensor, and a controller. The variable displacement engine has a plurality of cylinders. The conduit is configured to channel exhaust gas away from the cylinders. The sensor is disposed within the conduit and is configured to measure an amount of particulate matter within the exhaust gas. The controller is programmed to, in response to a command to run a diagnostic test, operate each of the plurality of cylinders independently to produce an exhaust gas stream for each cylinder and measure the amount of particulate matter within each of the exhaust gas streams.

A regeneration compliance system is provided and includes navigation, regeneration, zone and timing modules. The navigation module determines a location of a vehicle. The regeneration module determines a state of a PF of an exhaust system of an engine of the vehicle and whether to regenerate the PF based on the state of the PF. The zone module, based on the location of the vehicle, determines whether the vehicle is in a regeneration permitted zone and where regeneration permitted and prohibited zones are located relative to the vehicle. The timing module estimates time to a next regeneration permitted zone or an amount of time remaining in a current regeneration permitted zone. The regeneration module controls when the PF is regenerated based on (i) the state of the PF, and (ii) the time to the next regeneration permitted zone or the amount of time remaining in the current regeneration permitted zone.

Regeneration compliance systems for location based management of particulate filter regeneration

A vehicle includes an internal combustion engine, a conduit, and a controller. The internal combustion engine has a plurality of cylinders. The conduit is configured to channel exhaust gas away from the cylinders and to a catalyst. The controller is programmed to, in response to starting the engine and a temperature of the catalyst being less than a threshold, operate a first of the plurality of cylinders alone followed by operating the first and a second of the plurality of cylinders alone to increase the temperature of the catalyst toward the threshold.

A vehicle controller is programmed to, in response to a command to perform a diagnostic test, operate an engine under one or more lean conditions and/or operate the engine under one or more rich conditions to determine if a catalytic converter, a pre-catalyst oxygen sensor, and a post-catalyst oxygen sensor within the exhaust system of the engine are functioning properly.

Diagnostic test for engine exhaust system

An emissions control substrate. The emissions control substrate includes a first end in receipt of exhaust from an engine, and a second end from which exhaust exits the substrate. The second end is opposite to the first end. A plurality of channels are defined by sidewalls. The channels are arranged between the first end and the second end to direct exhaust from the engine through the emissions control substrate. The sidewalls at least one of filter and treat exhaust particulates as the exhaust passes through the sidewalls. The plurality of channels include at least one first channel defined by sidewalls that curve inward along lengths thereof from the first end to the second end.

Emissions control substrate

An emissions control substrate having a circuit in sidewalls thereof. The circuit changes resistance in response to accumulation of particles on the sidewalls that inhibits flow of exhaust through the emissions control substrate.
