System and method for starting an engine

An engine is provided having a fuel supply system which includes apparatus of straightforward construction that is powered solely by a flow of fuel through a delivery line to the engine for increasing the flow of fuel through the delivery line to the engine during start-up of the engine. A small control volume of pressurized fuel is stored during a preceding operational period of the engine for use in augmenting the fuel flow to the engine during a subsequent start-up of the engine. A converter apparatus is also disclosed for converting a portion of the fuel flow from the control volume and/or from a main fuel pump into an increased flow rate or pressure of fuel to the engine during the subsequent start-up. The control volume of fuel is stored in such a manner that volume compensation for changes in ambient temperature is provided, and in such a manner that the fuel line is positively shut off during periods of inoperation such that the fuel cannot leak out or evaporate and thus not be available for rapid start-up of the engine during a subsequent start.

A refrigeration system (10) having a compressor rotor (20) rotatably supported by a plurality of hydrodynamic bearings (22 and 24) lubricated by oiless pressurized liquid refrigerant and pressurizing refrigerant which flows to a condenser (34) providing liquid refrigerant which flows to an evaporator (68) in fluid communication with the condenser and the compressor in accordance with the invention includes a refrigeration circuit (36) coupled to the compressor, for providing pressurized refrigerant to the hydrodynamic bearings from the compressor and to the evaporator; a bearing pump (26), coupled to the refrigerant circuit and to the condenser, for providing pressurized refrigerant to the refrigeration circuit; a first temperature sensor (101) sensing a temperature Tsink of a heat exchange fluid at the condenser and providing a temperature signal representative of the temperature Tsink of the heat exchange fluid at the condenser; a second heat exchange sensor (103) sensing a temperature Tsource of a heat exchange fluid at the evaporator and providing a temperature signal representative of the temperature Tsource of the heat exchange fluid at the evaporator; and a controller (28 ), coupled to the temperature sensors, for controlling activation of the compressor and bearing pump as a function of the temperature signals to provide for three modes of operation with the first mode of operation being activation of only the compressor, the second mode of operation being activation of the bearing pump and the compressor and the third mode of operation being activation of only the bearing pump.

The problem of axial deflection of scrolls having interfitting vanes in a scroll type apparatus acting as a compressor or a pump due to elevated pressure at the interface between the scrolls is avoided by creating a low pressure zone in a chamber at the interface.

Axial separation of the scrolls 10, 12 in a positive apparatus of the scroll type is resisted by provision of a elongated, tension rod 44. Hollow shafts 20, 24; 30, 32 coupled to the scrolls 10, 12 receive opposed ends 46, 48 of the rod 44 which are fixedly secured thereto in nonrotatable relation. The rod 44 extends through the interface 14 between the scrolls 10, 12 via apertures 26 and 40 and resists axial separating forces present at the interface 14.

Scroll type positive displacement apparatus with tension rods secured

A positive displacement compressor or pump of the scroll type including first and second scroll plates having convoluted interfitting vanes. The flanks of the vanes on scroll plates are interfitting and in sealing contact with one another and the tips of the vanes in sealing contact with the other plate. One of the plates has a generally central port and the assemblage is provided with a peripheral port at the interface of the plates. A motor and linkage are provided to cause the plates to undergo orbital movement relative to each other and a selectively operable mechanism is operable to separate the plates to break sealing contact and thereby unload the compressor or pump.

Skating movement of seals in a positive displacement scroll apparatus having two scrolls which rotate with each other and additionally undergo relative orbiting movement, is avoided in a pressure balancing cavity construction by providing a chamber defining element which is coupled by bolts to the scroll. The seals thus rotate with the scrolls and move only across their short dimension as the scrolls undergo relative orbiting movement.

A positive displacement compressor or pump of the scroll type including first and second scroll plates (10, 12) having convoluted interfitting vanes (16). The flanks (18) of the vanes (16) on scroll plates (14) are interfitting and in sealing contact (20) with one another and the tips (22) of the vanes (16) in sealing contact with the other plate (14). One of the plates (14) has a generally central port and the assemblage is provided with a peripheral port (39) at the interface of the plates (14). A motor (35) and linkage (38) are provided to cause the plates to undergo orbital movement relative to each other and a selectively operable mechanism (40, 44, 46, 48; 62, 66, 76) is operable to separate the plates (14) to break sealing contact and thereby unload the compressor or pump.

Difficulties in sensing the temperature of end turns in dynamoelectric machines are avoided through the use of an envelope containing a temperature sensor disposed between abutting sets of end turns in such machine. The envelope has two insulating plies formed of insulating material sandwiching a ply formed of metal having excellent thermal conductivity. The latter is bonded to the former such that an exposed edge of the insulating plies exists by which the envelope may be closed to totally encapsulate the metal ply.

A positive displacement scroll type apparatus having first and second scrolls with interfitting vanes defining an interface which includes at least one close pocket adapted to move fluid from an inlet to an outlet. The outlet is located in one of the scrolls and is subjected to centrifugal force during operation of the compressor and this in turn causes the separation of lubricant from the compressed fluid by such centrifugal force. A lubricant collector is located at the outlet to prevent the lubricant from entering the remainder of a system with which the compressor may be associated.

One of the scrolls has a central outlet and a hollow shaft mounts the scroll for rotation. A machine housing contains the scrolls and the shaft and has an outlet port. A transfer tube is stationarily mounted in the housing in fluid communication with the port and extends into one end of the shaft. A seal seals the interface of the transfer tube and the shaft.

The invention relates to a torsionally stiff door adapted to be mounted for pivotal movement at points on a line parallel to an edge of the door and to be latched at a point along an opposing edge of the door. The door is intended for use in an environment where one side of the door is subject to loading over that surface. The door is also subject to highly directional point loading on the other side of the door. The surface loading and the point loading tend to torsionally bend the door about lines passing through the points, which lines intersect at the latch. The door is fashioned of a pair of spaced apart panels which form respectively one side of the door and the other side of the door.

This invention relates to a panel air chiller for use with a portable food storage unit. The panel air chiller includes in combination first and second spaced apart parallel panels that have thermal insulation disposed between and in contact with the panels. The thermal insulation material has formed therein at least a first and a second chamber between the panels thereby establishing passageways between the panels and through the thermal insulation material. Located in the first chamber is a means to extract heat from air passing thereover to thereby cool the air. At least one return air opening is provided through one of the panels to communicate with the portable storage unit. A fan is coupled to the space between the panels and to the first chamber to thereby draw air through the return air opening coupled to the portable storage unit. The return air so drawn moves past a means to extract heat from the air and cool the same and is thereafter delivered to and through the second chamber to at least one cool air supply opening. The cool air supply opening is adapted for coupling to the portable storage unit.
