A system includes a bottom hole assembly (BHA), including at least one valve including a bistable actuator coupled to a stem having a valve element, wherein the bistable actuator is configured to move the stem along an axial path of travel to position the valve element in an open position or a closed position relative to a valve seat. The at least one valve also includes a pressure-compensated seal disposed about the stem, wherein the pressure-compensated seal is disposed between an interior fluid chamber and a fluid flow path through the at least one valve.

A downhole tool for forming a wellbore includes a plurality of jets configured to flow a main flow of a flow of drilling fluid out of the downhole tool along a main flow path. The downhole tool includes a plurality of main valves in fluid communication with the plurality of jets along the main flow path and being actuatable to control the main flow through the plurality of jets. The downhole tool further includes a control valve in fluid communication with the plurality of main valves along a control flow path and configured to direct the control flow selectively to the plurality of main valves to selectively actuate the plurality of main valves based on a selective mechanical input to the control valve. The downhole tool further includes a mechanical input mechanism for providing the selective mechanical input to the control valve.

A system includes a bottom hole assembly (BHA) that includes a drill bit configured to drill a pilot hole in a subterranean formation, such that the drill bit provides a first point of contact between the BHA and the subterranean formation. The BHA includes a steering pad assembly that includes one or more steering pads each configured to move over a path of travel between a retracted position and an extended position to provide a second point of contact between the BHA and the subterranean formation, and a reamer configured to expand the pilot hole into a borehole, such that the reamer provides a third point of contact between the BHA and the subterranean formation. The system includes a controller configured to steer the BHA via the first, second, and third points of contact and adjustments to the second point of contact via control of the steering pad assembly.

A downhole communication system includes a gap sub located at an RSS. The gap sub is located on the outer, independently rotating member of the RSS. This allows the RSS to receive electromagnetic downlink communication signals from the surface or from an MWD. The RSS transmits electromagnetic uplink signals to a second gap sub located above the RSS or to the surface.

Systems and methods for downhole communication

A method for drilling a subterranean wellbore includes rotating a bottom hole assembly (BHA) in the subterranean wellbore to drill, in which the BHA includes a drill collar, a drill bit, a roll-stabilized housing deployed in the drill collar and configured to rotate with respect to the drill collar, and triaxial accelerometer and triaxial magnetometer sets deployed in the roll-stabilized housing. Triaxial accelerometer and triaxial magnetometer measurements and a drill collar rotation rate measurement are made while the BHA rotates. A wellbore inclination and a gravity tool face of the roll-stabilized housing are computed from the triaxial accelerometer measurements. The computed inclination and gravity toolface, the triaxial magnetometer measurements, and the measured rotation rate of the drill collar are processed to compute an azimuth of the subterranean wellbore in which influences of eddy currents and magnetometer biases are accounted.

A downhole communication system includes a mud pulse generator that generates a set of pressure pulses in a pattern, the pattern including encoded data. A roll stabilized platform includes a turbine that is rotatable in response to the pressure pulses. The rotational rate of the turbine is correlated with a pressure value. A processor on the roll stabilized platform demodulates the pressure pulse pattern, and then decodes the encoded data.

A downhole turbine includes a plurality of fins. The plurality of fins have an exit angle that exerts a tangential force on the fin, which imparts a torque on a hub. The fins have an adjustable exit angle that changes in response to changes in the properties of a drilling fluid. The changing exit angle changes the tangential force, which changes the torque on the hub.

A system for downhole communication includes a roll stabilized platform and a mud pulse generator in communication with the roll stabilized platform. The mud pulse generator generates pressure pulses in a pattern that includes encoded data. A receiver receives the pressure pulses and the encoded data is decoded. The receiver is located at any location capable of receiving pressure pulses.

A downhole connection includes a rotating member and an independently rotating member. A solenoid is connected to the independently rotating member and a moving member is connected to the rotating member. The moving member is movable by the solenoid and connected to an actuation valve of a downhole tool on the rotating member.

A pressure control valve for a downhole drilling system includes a choke body and a restrictor body. The choke body is installed in the bore of a housing. A fluid flow flows through an orifice in the choke body. Changing a distance between the choke body and the restrictor body changes a pressure differential uphole of the pressure control valve.

A method for drilling a subterranean wellbore includes rotating a drill string in the wellbore to drill. The drill string includes a roll-stabilized housing deployed in a drill collar and survey sensors deployed in the roll-stabilized housing. Sensor measurements are acquired while the drill string is rotating. High bandwidth accelerometer measurements may be obtained by combining triaxial accelerometer measurements and gyroscopic sensor measurements. Survey parameters, including a wellbore azimuth, may be computed from the high bandwidth accelerometer measurements. Triaxial magnetometer measurements may be processed to compute an eddy current induced wellbore azimuth error which may be removed from a previously computed wellbore azimuth to obtain a corrected wellbore azimuth.

A rotary steerable tool may include a tool body with an upper end and a lower end. Additionally, the tool body may include at least one steering assembly extending from the tool body and includes at least one steering actuator configured to extend beyond other portions of the steering assembly. Furthermore, at least one cutter may be disposed on the rotary steerable tool a distance from the at least one steering actuator.

A technique facilitates communication of signals in a downhole environment. According to an embodiment, the system comprises an antenna which may be combined with a well component for communicating signals along a wellbore. The antenna comprises wire which is coated with a suitable material, such as amorphous polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and wet wound into a coil. A plurality of protective elements may be combined with the wire, e.g. sleeves may be placed over portions of the wire to protect the wire. Layers of tape also may be wrapped around coil to enhance durability of the antenna.
