Implantation of an accommodating intraocular lens in an eye may require the accurate measurement of the size, circumference, or diameter of the capsular bag of the eye. A flexible ring or ring portion may be temporarily or permanently inserted into the capsular bag for measuring the circumference of the capsular bag, for example, after extraction of a natural lens from the capsular bag. The ring or ring portion is generally compressible to fit through a surgical incision, then expands to fill the capsular bag along an equatorial region. The ring or ring portion includes a central component that changes shape and/or angle as the ring or ring portion is compressed. The shape change is generally correlated to the size of the capsular bag and may be visually measured through the cornea, the measurement being generally independent of corneal magnification. The measurement may be used to determine or calculate information about the capsular bag such as its size, elasticity, accommodative range, and so forth.

The invention provides a medical device having a thermister for temperature measurement, irrigation/aspiration ports for fluid exchange and application of therapeutic modalities, a pressure manometer for pressure measurement, and an external system for control of temperature, pressure, and flow rate. When applied to the central nervous system (CNS), this device can be used in hypothermia or hyperthermia applications, the exchange of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), the application of treatment modalities, and the insertion of a ventriculostomy or ventriculostomy-like unit. When applied to spinal cord applications, this device can provide temperature control and a method for application of treatment modalities by using a venting device placed in the space surrounding the spinal cord, a device with similar instrumentation to measure temperature and pressure. A device for ultrasound localization of the CNS device is described. A device for a fiber optic endoscope for visualization and localization is also described. Method of using the devices in treating patients suffering from cardiac arrest, circulatory arrest, exsanguination, head or neck trauma, strokes, tumors and other intracranial diseases are disclosed. In the case of hypothermia treatment of the brain, rapid cooling using principles of convection and conduction will be applied to the lateral ventricle and subarachnoid and/or subdural space simultaneously where the neurons are located in close proximity.

Medical device and method for temperature control and treatment of the brain and spinal cord

An intraocular lens includes an optic for focusing light and a movement assembly coupled to the optic. The movement assembly is adapted to cooperate with the eye to effect accommodating movement of the optic. The movement assembly includes a plurality of movement members and a suspension structure. The movement members are coupled to a periphery of the optic. The suspension structure is coupled to the movement members and is adapted to be in contact with a peripheral region of a capsular bag of an eye. The movement members are adapted to convert radial movement of the suspension structure caused by movement of the capsular bag to axial movement of the optic. The movement members are also adapted to amplify the radial movement of the suspension structure so that the optic moves axially a greater distance than the distance moved radially by the suspension structure.

Accommodating intraocular lens with suspension structure

Apparatus for insertion of intraocular lenses into the eye are disclosed. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a loading chamber and an injection portion. The loading chamber has a proximal end and a distally extending opening. The loading chamber defines a first lumen and is adapted to receive an intraocular lens in an unfolded state at the distally extending opening and to fold the intraocular lens and maintain the intraocular lens folded as the intraocular lens is placed in the first lumen. The injection portion defines a second lumen aligned with the first lumen and is adapted to receive the folded intraocular lens from the first lumen in the second lumen. The injection portion has an open distal end through which the folded intraocular lens from the second lumen passes to be inserted into an eye.

A phacoemulsification handpiece for ophthalmic surgical procedures includes a needle having a tip and connected to a source of ultrasonic energy, for cutting and/or fragmenting eye tissue along with a conduit for introducing irrigation fluid proximate the needle tip. The handpiece also includes separate structure for introducing a viscous fluid, such as a viscoelastic material, proximate the needle tip as well as bore through the needle and handpiece for aspirating irrigation fluid, viscoelastic material end cut and/or fragmented eye tissue. An accumulator, connected to the housing is provided for containing a supply of viscous fluid. A diaphragm assembly and a manual valve are provided for delivering viscous material to the needle tip.

Phacoemulsification apparatus includes a handpiece having a needle and electrical apparatus for ultrasonically vibrating the needle. A power source provides electrical power to the handpiece electrical apparatus and irrigation fluid is provided to the handpiece needle and aspirated therefrom during phacoemulsification. Temperature sensors are provided for determining the temperature of the handpiece needle and a control unit is provided for varying a power level provided the handpiece electrical apparatus and the power source in response to the needle temperature. Alternatively, the control unit functions to vary either irrigation fluid flow or aspiration fluid flow from the handpiece in response to the needle temperature.

Closed loop temperature controlled phacoemulsification system to prevent corneal burns

A thin tip phaco needle is provided including a body having a longitudinal bore for enabling passage of debris from a surgical site, a threaded end for engaging an ultrasonic probe handpiece, and a tip, disposed at a distal end of the body, for cutting tissue. The tip includes a beveled, or stepped, edge having a wide proximal wall and a thin, distal, cutting wall of about half a width of the wide wall. The beveled edge functions to enhance cutting efficiency of the tip and increase force pressure by the tip on tissue such as to decrease ultrasonic energy required to cause the needle to penetrate hard tissue. The needle tip may be angled so as to define a cutting plane having a wide upper arc and a thin lower arc.

Apparatus and method for delivering viscoelastic material to an eye

A reusable cartridge assembly for a phaco machine includes a plurality of flexible tubes for handling of irrigation and aspiration fluids to and from a handpiece. A plate having a plurality of channels formed therein supports and removably holds the flexible tubes within said plate. Apertures in said plate aligned with said channel means are provided for enabling plunger access to the flexible tubes in order to regulate fluid flow therethrough.

Reusable cartridge assembly for a phaco machine

An irrigation/aspiration apparatus is provided for use with surgical instrumentation requiring irrigation and aspiration of fluids and a peristaltic pump. The apparatus includes a housing and a manifold for connecting a transfer tube with aspiration and irrigation lines from the surgical instrumentation and with waste and supply lines. An opening the housing enables access to the transfer tube in order to control fluid flow therein. A diaphragm mounted to the housing and in fluid communication with the aspiration tube enables both pressure measurement and pressure control in the tubing when the housing is inserted into a drawer in the console and in operative engagement with a peristaltic pump head disposed therein.

Method for regulating intraocular pressure during endophthalmic surgery

Apparatus for inserting intraocular lenses (IOLs) into eyes are disclosed. The apparatus comprises an insertion tube, and an injector rod having a distal tip capable of engaging an intraocular lens. A rotating assembly is provided to controllably rotate the rod as it moves distally through the insertion tube. The rotation of the injector rod is imparted to the IOL in such a manner that the IOL is also rotated as it moves through the insertion tube. The degree of rotation of the IOL is controlled to place the IOL in an orientation for final implantation in the eye with reduced risk of damaging the eye. Methods for inserting an IOL into an eye using such apparatus are also disclosed and are within the scope of the present invention.

An apparatus for insertion of intraocular lenses into the eye. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a loading chamber and an injection portion. The loading chamber has a proximal end and a distally extending opening. The loading chamber defines a first lumen and is adapted to receive an intraocular lens in an unfolded state at the distally extending opening and to fold the intraocular lens and maintain the intraocular lens folded as the intraocular lens is placed in the first lumen. The injection portion defines a second lumen aligned with the first lumen and is adapted to receive the folded intraocular lens from the first lumen in the second lumen. A reusable cartridge assembly for a phaco machine includes a first plate with a plurality of flow channels therein and a sealing gasket with a sheet for sealing against the first plate to prevent fluid from leaving the flow channels. In addition, a tube is provided, fixed to the sealing gasket and protruding therefrom, for enabling engagement between the tube and a pump head for circulation of fluid through flow channels. A second plate is provided for applying a sealing pressure between the sheet and the first plate. In addition, the sealing gasket may include a sensing element for determining pressure within the flow channels.
