The friction face of the rotor of an electromagnetic clutch is formed by a ring of molded friction material and by magnetic insets molded within the friction material and defining the magnetic pole pieces of the rotor. The inserts are formed with multiple shoulders which face in various directions and which interlock intimately with the friction material to prevent the inserts from shifting in any direction relative to the friction material. In addition, the inserts themselves are anchored directly to the rotor by screws in order to prevent the inserts from pulling away from the rotor and to promote uniform wearing of the inserts and the friction material.

Friction face for a magnetic coupling

The friction face of an electromagnet is formed by a relatively thin sheet of friction material and by magnetic inserts which are secured to the friction material and which define the pole faces of the magnet. The friction face is adapted to be easily removed from the magnet and replaced with a new friction face when the friction face becomes worn.

Electromagnet with replaceable friction face

An electromagnetic friction brake whose components are held in assembled relationship by pins which are received with a press fit within holes in an electromagnet and an end plate and which are received with a loose fit within holes in an armature. By virtue of the pins, an assembly gage may be used to automatically establish an air gap of desired width between the armature and the electromagnet when the brake is assembled.

Method of making an electrically released electromagnetic friction brake

An electromagnet in which an oblong block of friction material captivates a coil on an oblong plate which is stamped from sheet metal. One pole of the magnet is formed by a stud which is secured to the plate while the other pole or poles either are formed by flanges bent from the plate or by an additional stud or studs secured to the plate.
