A coating composition is provided comprising (a) a polymer containing reactive functional groups; (b) a curing agent having reactive functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups in the polymer in (a); and (c) a polymeric material different from (a) and (b) having functional groups. The functional groups in components (a) and (b) are more reactive with each other than with the functional groups in component (c) such that upon curing, at least a portion of the functional groups on component (c) remain unreacted. A coating layer formed from the composition upon application to a substrate has surface regions and a bulk region, and the concentration of component (c) at one or more surface regions is greater than the concentration of component (c) in the bulk region of the coating layer. The composition can be used in multi-layer composites containing two or more coating layers.

Surface active additives for coatings

The present invention is directed to a substantially pigment-free coating composition with good cure response and improved appearance. In particular, the substantially pigment-free coating composition may comprise (a) at least one functional polymer containing amine groups and groups selected from hydroxyl and carbamate; and (b) a crosslinking agent.

Coating compositions containing amine-hydroxy functional polymer and/or amine-carbamate functional polymer

A composition that includes a non-gelled copolymer that contains residues having structural units (I): where n is an integer from 1 to 10,000; Ris linear or branched Cto Calkyl; Ris selected from the group consisting of methyl, linear, cyclic or branched Cto Calkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl and aralkyl, and Ris a group resulting from a post polymerization reaction selected from transesterification, transamidification and hydrolysis with a compound selected from hydroxy functional compounds and amine functional compounds. The composition may contain co-reactive functional groups and may be a thermosetting composition. A substrate may be coated with the thermosetting composition singly or as part of a multi-layer composite coating that includes a base coat layer and a substantially pigment free top coat layer.

Compositions containing copolymers of olefinic monomers

Fluoropolymers are disclosed. The fluoropolymers include (i) units derived from a fluoromonomer composition comprising chlorotrifluoroethylene, and (ii) units derived from at least one donor monomer composition. In the disclosed fluoropolymers, units (i) and (ii) are distributed along the fluoropolymer chain in a substantially alternating fashion. Also disclosed are thermosetting compositions containing such fluoropolymers, substrates coated with such compositions, methods for making such compositions, and methods for coating substrates with such compositions.

Thermosetting coating compositions comprising a copolymer formed from chlorotrifluoroethylene and methods of making copolymers formed from chlorotrifluoroethylene

Fluoropolymers are disclosed. The fluoropolymers include (i) units derived from a fluoromonomer having the formula FC&#x2550;CXY, where X is CFand Y is either F or CF, and (ii) units derived from at least one donor monomer. In the disclosed fluoropolymers, units (i) and (ii) are distributed along the fluoropolymer chain in a substantially alternating fashion. Also disclosed are thermosetting compositions containing such fluoropolymers, substrates coated with such compositions, methods for making such compositions, and methods for coating substrates with such compositions.

A curable, aqueous film-forming composition is provided, comprising: wherein Ris linear or branched Cto Calkyl, Ris selected from methyl, linear, cyclic or branched Cto Calkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl and aralkyl; and The invention is also directed to a multi-component composite coating composition including a base coat deposited from a pigmented film-forming composition and a transparent topcoat applied over the base coat. A thermosetting composition that includes a co-reactable solid, particulate mixture of a film forming material having functional groups, a crosslinking agent having at least two functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups in the film forming material, and a monocarboxylic acid. Powder coating compositions

A thermosetting composition that includes an ungelled copolymer composition and a crosslinking agent. The ungelled copolymer composition includes a functional group-containing copolymer that includes segments of alternating residues derived from a donor monomer composition comprising an acceptor monomer composition. The donor monomer composition includes one or both of isobutylene and diisobutylene, and the acceptor monomer composition includes acrylic monomers and monomers containing functional groups. The ungelled copolymer composition is substantially free of transition metals and Lewis acids, and the copolymer is substantially free of maleate-type monomer residues and fumarate-type monomer residues. The crosslinking agent has at least two functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups of the copolymer. The thermosetting composition may be in liquid, powder, or dispersed form and may be applied by traditional or electrocoating methods.

Thermosetting compositions containing alternating copolymers of isobutylene type monomers

A curable, aqueous film-forming composition is provided that includes a polymeric binder comprising reactive functional groups, a crosslinking agent having at least two functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups of the polymeric binder, and a copolymer flow control agent comprising at least 30 mol % of residues containing alternating residues from a donor monomer and from an acceptor monomer. The copolymer contains at least 15 mol % of an isobutylene type donor monomer. Components (a) and (b) are substantially hydrophobic and are prepared as an aqueous dispersion comprising polymeric microparticles, prepared by mixing components (a) and (b) together under high shear conditions. A multi-component composite coating composition is also provided, comprising a base coat deposited from a pigmented film-forming composition and a transparent topcoat applied over the base coat. The topcoat is deposited from the film-forming composition described above.

Waterborn film-forming compositions containing alternating copolymers of isobutylene type monomers

A composition that includes a copolymer containing residues having the following structural units (I):where n is an integer from 1 to 10,000; Ris linear or branched Cto Calkyl; Ris selected from the group consisting of methyl, linear, cyclic, or branched Cto Calkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl, and aralkyl; and Ris a moiety comprising a group that is capable of undergoing a polymerization reaction when exposed to actinic radiation or ionizing radiation. The composition may be used to coat a substrate by providing a substrate; applying a layer of a radiation-curable composition that includes the copolymer described above over at least a portion of a surface of the substrate; and curing the radiation-curable composition by exposing the layer to actinic radiation in an amount sufficient to effect curing of the radiation-curable composition.

Radiation-curable compositions containing alternating copolymers of isobutylene-type monomers

A copolymer composition that includes a copolymer comprised of at least 30 mol % of residues having the following alternating residues from a donor monomer and from an acceptor monomer. The copolymer contains at least 15 mol % of an isobutylene type donor monomer and at least 15 mol % of an acrylic monomer as an acceptor monomer. The copolymer is substantially free of maleate or fumarate monomer segments and the copolymer composition is substantially free of Lewis acids and transition metals. Also disclosed is a thermosetting composition that includes a reactant comprising functional groups, a crosslinking agent having at least two functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups first reactant, and a copolymer flow control agent that includes the copolymer composition as well as substrates coated with the thermosetting composition.

Alternating copolymers of isobutylene type monomers

A composition that includes a non-gelled copolymer that includes one or more residues of a first polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a pendant amide, ester or carboxylic acid group. The nearest neighboring monomer residues of the majority of the first monomer residues along the copolymer molecule do not contain pendant carbonyl functional groups. The amide, ester or carboxylic acid group of the residues of the first monomer are the post polymerization transesterification, transamidification or hydrolysis reaction product of a C-Calkyl ester group in the unreacted first monomer with a compound selected from amine functional compounds and hydroxy functional compounds. The reacted copolymer is substantially free of cyclical structures resulting from the transesterification, transamidification or hydrolysis reaction. The compositions may be thermosetting compositions useful in multi-layer composite coatings.
