The present invention relates to a liquid-crystal (LC) medium comprising one or more polymerisable compounds and to the use of the LC medium for optical, electro-optical and electronic purposes, in particular in LC displays, especially in LC displays of the polymer sustained alignment (PS, PSA) or self-aligning (SA) type.

The present invention relates to polymerisable compounds, to processes and intermediates for the preparation thereof, to liquid-crystal (LC) media comprising them, and to the use of the polymerisable compounds and LC media for optical, electro-optical and electronic purposes, in particular in LC displays, especially in LC displays of the polymer sustained alignment (PS, PSA) and self-aligning (SA) type.

Polymerisable compounds and the use thereof in liquid-crystal displays

Liquid-crystalline media (LC media) comprising self-aligning mesogens (self-alignment additives) which effect homeotropic (vertical) alignment of the LC media at a surface or the cell walls of a liquid-crystal display (LC display). The self-alignment additives contain five-ring systems. LC displays having homeotropic alignment of the liquid-crystalline medium (LC medium) without conventional alignment layers are provided.

Compounds for the homeotropic alignment of liquid-crystalline media

A liquid-crystalline media (LC media) containing a low-molecular-weight, non-polymer component, and a combination of self-alignment additives for vertical alignment of two or more of the specified kinds (formulae IA to IM). The combination of two or more self-alignment additives affect homeotropic (vertical) alignment of the LC media at a surface or the cell surfaces of a liquid-crystal display (LC display).

Liquid-crystalline media having homeotropic alignment

The invention relates to a liquid crystal mixture characterised in that it comprises one or more photoreactive mesogens of formula I wherein the parameters and groups occurring are defined as indicated in claim, to a process for the fabrication of liquid crystal displays using these liquid crystal mixtures and to a liquid crystal display obtainable by this process. The invention further relates to new compounds of formula I.

Chiral compounds

The present invention relates to mesogenic media and to electro-optical displays comprising these media as light modulation media. In particular, the electro-optical displays according to the present invention are displays, which are operated at a temperature, at which the mesogenic modulation media are in an optically isotropic phase, preferably in a blue phase.

Liquid crystal medium and liquid crystal display

Disclosed are liquid-crystalline media (LC media) comprising a low-molecular-weight component and a polymerisable component. The polymerisable component contains self-aligning, polymerisable meso-gens (polymerisable self-alignment additives) which effect homeotropic (vertical) alignment of the LC media at a surface or the cell walls of a liquid-crystal display (LC display).
