Technology for dynamic characterization of a communication device is disclosed. One method comprises sending an acoustic characterization excitation signal to be output by an acoustic transducer in the communication device. A received acoustic coupling signal that is received by a microphone of the communication device in response to the output of the acoustic transducer is measured. An acoustic signal conditioning algorithm is applied to at least one of the microphone or the acoustic transducer to reduce an amplitude of the acoustic signal or the received acoustic coupling signal to a level below a selected threshold.

Dynamic characterization of a communication device

A system and method for monitoring for a distressed sound is disclosed. The system comprises a noise detection module configured to monitor ambient noise through a microphone on a digital telephony device operating in an idle state and determine an ambient noise level. A sound processing module is configured to process sounds received from the microphone that have an amplitude a selected amount greater than an amplitude of the ambient noise and determine if the processed sounds match a predetermined statistical model of a distressed sound. An assistance request module is configured to send a request for assistance via the digital telephony device for processed sounds that match the predetermined statistical model of the distressed sound.

A desktop network protocol telephone set has a network interface for connecting the telephone set to a local area network. An audio interface provides audio signals to and from a handset of the telephone set. A processing circuit is responsive to communications from the network interface. A control circuit coupled to the processing circuit is used for changing a driving frequency of the LCD panel.

Device and method for preventing ion build-up in liquid crystal displays

A midspan power adapter is provided for use in a balanced communication system, such as an Ethernet system, where differential signals are transmitted between two devices. The adapter passes data signals through, and provides power to an end device, such as an IP phone, with significantly less contribution to the electromagnetic emissions of the system than known midspan adapters. Balance and symmetry inherent in a structured cable can be maintained by a termination network connecting center taps of a transformer and the spare pairs of both the incoming and outgoing cables to a common point. The adapter can provide power through unused wires (known as spare pair power) or by combining power with data signals (known as phantom feed). A common mode choke is included in the power feed to prevent noise currents from flowing through the power supply connections to earth ground, helping to minimize radiated noise.

Midspan power delivery system for reduced emissions

A system and method of transferring data over a network from a first portable electronic device to a second portable electronic device, each device including an infrared interface. The method comprises sending the data from the first portable electronic device to a first network portal via infrared communication, sending the data from the first network portal to a second network portal via the network, and sending the data from the second network portal to the second portable electronic device via infrared communication.

System and method for PDA to PDA communication using a network portal

A user enabled application for monitoring the presence of a PDA connected to a network via a cradle and, in response, ringing a phone in the vicinity of the PDA. The display on the telephone displays a message that asks the user to enter an access code via the telephone dialpad. If the user enters the correct access code then nothing happens and the phone continues to work as normal. If, however, the correct access code is not entered, the system communicates the unauthorized removal of the PDA to pre-selected phone numbers, pager numbers or email addresses. Appropriate steps can then be taken to try to and recover the missing device.

Many device components included a printed circuit board supporting light-generating means along with a light pipe to conduct light from the light-generating means to a diffuser adjacent the surface of the components. The present invention offers an improvement whereby the light pipe can be utilized both for transmission of visible wavelengths and for transmission/reception of invisible (infrared) wavelengths. To accomplish this, a light pipe is constituted of two adjacent portions, and an infrared transceiver module is coupled into both portions.
