A composition comprising starch, a biogum and water subjected to heat, shearing and optionally depolymerization is provided which is useful as a stable high solids dispersion useful in various applications including as wet-end additives for paper making.

Improved water resistant acetal sizing agents including 1,1-octadecoxyoctadecane are provided along with methods for their synthesis including methods in which C to C alkyl bromides are reacted with a polyol under basic conditions and those in which a C to C primary alcohol is reacted with an organic base in the presence of a suitable oxidizing agent under basic conditions.

Process for preparing a dialkyl acetal of a C8 to C30 aldehyde

The invention relates to the sizing of substrates including paper, paperboard, wood and textiles, using an acetal sizing agent including 1,1-octadecoxyoctadecane, the distearyl acetal of stearyl aldehyde.

Method of sizing substrates

The invention provides an improved method of coating mediumweight and heavyweight papers in a size press by applying a paper coating composition comprising a binder wherein the binder comprises a stable aqueous dispersion comprising a water insoluble component and a water soluble component such that the water insoluble component comprises coalescable polymer particles which have a T.sub.g less than 55.degree. C. and a majority of which have a particle size less than 1 micron; and the water soluble component comprises a water soluble polymer capable of inhibiting coalescence of said polymer particles, or a water soluble polymer and a component capable of inhibiting coalescence of said polymer particles; and wherein said water insoluble component comprises greater that 3% and less than 75% by weight of the binder solids and said water soluble component comprises greater than 25% and less than about 97% of said solids.

Size press coating method

A dried film reinforced with coalescable water insoluble polymer particles which are substantially noncoalesced is disclosed. Also disclosed are dried films reinforced with noncoalesced water insoluble polymer particles which are readily water dispersible. Also disclosed are stable aqueous dispersions for formation of such films which comprise (a) a water insoluble component comprising coalescable polymer particles which have a T.sub.g less than 55.degree. C. and a majority of which have a particle size of less than 1 micron; and (b) a water soluble component which comprises a water soluble polymer capable of inhibiting coalescence of the polymer particles, or a water soluble polymer and a component capable of inhibiting coalescence of the polymer particles.

Reinforced films made from water soluble polymers

An aqueous, salt stable polymeric dispersion comprising the reaction product of a thinned, gelatinized starch and one or more vinyl monomers, said monomer(s) comprising at least 10% 1,3-butadiene by weight is disclosed.

Salt stable starch graft polymers

A stable aqueous polymeric dispersion comprising a graft copolymer of thinned, gelatinized starch and one or more vinyl grafting monomers, the vinyl monomers including at least 10% by weight 1,3-butadiene is disclosed. Also disclosed are paper coating color compositions comprising the polymeric dispersions and pigments and improved high gloss papers coated with the coating color compositions.
