A position sensing system and method for a braking assembly for a vehicle. The braking assembly includes a rotor, a caliper assembly disposed around the rotor and having a fixed mount bracket and a floating portion which moves when the brakes are applied. The position sensing system has a sensing element and a reference portion. The sensing element is attached to a location of the braking assembly such that the reference portion moves in relation to the sensing element when the floating portion moves. The sensor assembly is configured to generate a signal correlative to the relative positions of the sensing element and reference portion. The position sensing system includes a processor configured to store predetermined signatures and determine a condition of a component of the vehicle based on a match between the signal and one of the predetermined signatures.

Position sensing system and method for gathering vehicle component data

Methods, apparatuses, and computer program products for optimizing utilization of a wireless position sensor are disclosed. In a particular embodiment, a controller of the wireless position sensor receives output from a magnetic-field-dependent sensor of the wireless position sensor. The magnetic-field-dependent sensor is configured to register the strength of a magnetic field of a magnet attached to a mechanical component. In this example, the registered strength corresponds to a position of the mechanical component along a directional path. According to this embodiment, the controller generates a comparison of the output to one or more predefined movement signatures and based on the comparison, determines whether to change an operating state of one or more components of the wireless position sensor.

Optimizing utilization of a wireless position sensor

A position sensing system for a braking system has a rotor and a caliper assembly disposed at least partially around the rotor. The caliper assembly has a fixed mount bracket and a floating portion. At least two brake pads are attached to the floating portion, operable to exert a force against the rotor in response to a force through the floating portion. A first portion is coupled to the fixed mount bracket. A second portion is coupled to the floating portion such that the second portion moves in response to movement of the floating portion. A sensor assembly measures a distance between the first portion and the second portion. A wireless transmitter sends a signal from the sensor assembly to detached electronics, the signal representing the distance measured.

Position sensing system for a braking system

An occupant weight sensor () for placement between a frame () fixed to the chassis of a vehicle and a second frame () supporting a vehicle seat has a sense element having a first body () formed with a planar sense surface on which are mounted piezoresistors electrically connected in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. A post () extends outwardly from the first body for attachment to the first frame. A second body is formed with a force transfer portion () permanently attached to the first body along an outer periphery circumscribing the sense surface. The piezoresistors are electrically connected to conditioning electronics received in a chamber formed between the two bodies. The effects of parasitic loads on the sense element are minimized by selected placement of the piezoresistors on the sense surface. Several variations are disclosed for attaching the sensor to the first and second frames and both longitudinally and laterally extending electrical connectors are shown.
