The present disclosure relates, according to some embodiments, to apparatus, systems, and methods of fracturing a geological structure including the application of kinetic energy (e.g., from high velocity frack fluid) to a subterranean structure. In some embodiments, the present disclosure relates to apparatus, systems, and methods for delivery of high velocity fluid to a well using a down hole valve and/or throttling system. The present disclosure relates to apparatus, systems, and methods of generating pressure using accumulators (e.g., high pressure accumulators) at the surface of a well.

Apparatus, systems, and methods for fracturing a geological formation

A rotary jar is described that is part of a drill string and includes a mandrel and an anvil that move longitudinally in opposite directions to deliver a sharp upward or downward blow that is transmitted to a fish, which may be a separate tool or a portion of the drill string that is stuck in the well bore in an effort to free the fish or the stuck portion of the drill pipe. The mandrel carries rollers that move through longitudinally extending grooves when the jars are tripped. In the jars of this invention, the grooves follow a serpentine path to cause the mandrel to transmit a torsional force on the fish to try to rotate the fish as well as providing an upward or downward blow.

An adjustable length drilling sub is disclosed for placing in a drill string between stabilizers to allow the distance between the stabilizers to be changed while the drill string is in the well bore to adjust the rate the angle of the well bore from the vertical is changing. The sub includes an outer member and an inner member that extends into the outer member with an annular space between the members. Protrusions in the form of drive pins mounted in the wall of the outer member extend into the annular space to move into and out of engagement with cavities formed on the outer surface of the inner member. When the pins are in engagement with the cavities, torque in one direction and weight can be transmitted to the bit. When the pins are rotated in the other direction out of the cavities, the members can be moved longitudinally relative to each other to change the distance between the stabilizers.

A method of and apparatus for controlling the azimuthal drift of a drill bit in an inclined well bore is described. The method comprises prestressing a drill collar member in torsion to adjust the angle in the horizontal plant that the drill bit makes with the longitudinal axis of the well bore when the drill collar is subjected to the gravitational, axial, and torsional forces of the drilling operation. The drill collar includes an inner tubular member and an outer tubular member. The two are held against relative rotation at one end. The desired torque is placed in the members by rotating the other ends of the members relative to each other in the desired direction. A splined member engages grooves in the inner and outer surfaces of the members to hold the members in their prestressed state.

A method of and apparatus for drilling directional well bores is disclosed in which the well bore or a portion thereof is drilled along a line that follows, as close as possible, a preselected catenary curve. An extensible joint located between a stabilizer just above the drilling bit and a stabilizer spaced from the bit stabilizer is used to cause the bit to tend to increase the dip angle of the well bore at an increasing rate.

A stationary offshore platform is protected against damage from moving ice sheets by a conical shield surrounding the platform support structure and having means, such as a pneumatic biasing system, for raising or lowering the shield along the platform support. A system of mooring lines, thrustors, or the like is used to rotate the shield about the platform support. After an advancing ice sheet contacts the narrower upper portion of the shield, the shield is raised so that a wider lower portion of the shield can exert an upward force on the ice sheet to break the ice into pieces. The shield is rotated, while in its elevated position, to carry the broken ice with it to a location downstream from the advancing ice sheet. The shield is then lowered to dump back into the ocean the ice pieces broken by the upstroke of the shield. Means are provided for heating the exterior surfaces of the shield to melt ice pieces sticking to it.

There is disclosed a method and apparatus for recovering small particles of gold or platinum from a slurry by feeding the slurry onto a layer of Mercury which is flowing downwardly along a generally conical, downwardly converging inner wall of a housing. The housing is rotated about the vertical axis of the conical wall at a speed which induces particles to settle out or a malgamate with the layer of Mercury and causes the remainder of the slurry to move upwardly over the Mercury layer and out of the housing. Upon collection and separation of the particles therefrom, the Mercury is returned to the housing for resupply to the inner wall thereof so as to maintain a continuous layer of Mercury.

An improved vessel for use in ice-covered waters has a motion inducing tank disposed in its hull at a location spaced from the even-keel center of buoyancy of the hull. Ports communicate from the lower extent of the hull to the exterior of the hull below the hull load waterline for flow of water into and out of the tank in response to pressure in the tank being different from ambient pressure outside the hull. The tank extends vertically in the hull from a lower end located below the hull load waterline to an upper end located above the waterline substantially as far as the location of the ports below the load waterline. Airflow devices are coupled to the upper extent of the tank and are operable alternately for generating superatmospheric and subatmospheric air pressure in the tank. The airflow devices include an air pressurizing device having a suction connection and a discharge connection. Ducts are provided for coupling the suction connection separately to the upper extent of the tank and to atmosphere, and also for coupling discharge connections separately to the upper extent of the tank and to atmosphere.
