An insulated glass unit (IGU) comprises a first pane of a transparent material and a second pane of a transparent material. The second pane is spaced apart from the first pane to define a cavity therebetween. At least one of a spacer and an array of stand-off members is disposed between the first and second panes to maintain separation therebetween. A first adhesive layer forms at least a portion of a gas-tight connection between the first pane and the second pane. A highly gas-restrictive coating is disposed over the adhesive layer, where the coating is an inorganic layer.

A vacuum insulated glass unit (VIGU) comprises a first pane of a transparent material and a second pane of a transparent material. The present invention is a green soda-lime-silica glass composition. The composition comprises 68 to 75% SiO, 10 to 18% NaO, 5 to 15% CaO, 0 to 10% MgO, 0 to 5% AlO, and 0 to 5% K0, where CaO+MgO is 6 to 15% and NaO+K0 is 10 to 20%, and colorants comprising: 0.3 to 0.8 wt. % total iron as FeOwherein the ratio of FeO/total Fe as FeOis 0.35 to 0.62; 0.05 to 0.5 wt. % manganese compound as MnO; 0 to 0.1 wt. % titanium oxide as TiO; and 0 to 1 wt. % cerium oxide as CeO. The colored glass has the following spectral properties at 4.0 mm. thickness: 65 to 81% light transmittance using Illuminant A (LTA) and using Illuminant C has a dominant wavelength of 494 to 555 nanometers with an excitation purity of 2 to 9%.

Green glass composition

A blue glass composition comprises a soda-lime-silica base and a colorant portion consisting essentially of about 0.4 to 0.65 weight percent total iron oxide, about 0.1 to 0.3 weight percent manganese oxide, and cobalt oxide in an amount effective to produce a cobalt concentration of about 0.0002 to 0.0013 weight percent (about 2 to 13 ppm). The glass is characterized by a ratio of ferrous oxide to total iron oxide between about 0.43 and 0.58. The glass composition exhibits a combination of high visible transmittance, high infrared absorption and enhanced blue coloration. This is attributed in large part to the combination of ferrous oxide and cobalt oxide and to the effect of manganese oxide in reducing iron sulfide formation and thereby avoiding amber coloration.

Infrared absorbing blue glass composition

The present invention is a bronze and gray glass composition. The composition comprises 68 to 75% SiO , 10 to 18% Na O, 5 to 15% CaO, 0 to 10% MgO, 0 to 5% Al O , and 0 to 5% K O, where CaO&plus;MgO is 6 to 15% and Na O&plus;K O is 10 to 20%, and colorants comprising: 0.22 to 0.39 wt. % total iron as Fe O wherein the ratio of FeO/total Fe as Fe O is 0.35 to 0.64; 0.1 to 0.5 wt. % manganese compound as MnO ; 0 to 1.2 wt. % cerium oxide as CeO ; and 2 to 10 ppm selenium, and 0 to 20 ppm cobalt as cobalt oxide. The colored glass has the following spectral properties at 4.0 mm. thickness: 65 to 78% light transmittance using Illuminant A (LTA) and using Illuminant C has a dominant wavelength of 493 to 577 nanometers with an excitation purity up to 7%.

Gray and bronze glass composition

The present invention provides for a new improved green privacy glass. In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, the iron is oxidized with the help of inexpensive manganese oxide. No chromium, cerium nor titanium oxides are added to obtain the desired green color. The glass has a %UV less than 13% at 4.0 MM. This low UV absorption could eliminate the need for a black band in glass to prevent the fading of the color in glass.

Chrome-free green privacy glass composition with improved ultra violet absorption

The present invention is a blue soda-lime-silica glass composition. The composition comprises 68 to 75% SiO , 10 to 18% Na O, 5 to 15% CaO, 0 to 10% MgO, 0 to 5% Al O , and 0 to 5% K O, where CaO&plus;MgO is 6 to 15% and Na O&plus;K O is 10 to 20%, and colorants comprising: 0.3 to 0.8 wt. % total iron oxide as Fe O wherein the ratio of FeO/total Fe as Fe O is 0.35 to 0.62; 0.05 to 0.5 wt. % manganese compound as MnO , 0 to 0.30 wt. % titanium oxide as TiO ; and 0 to 0.8 wt. % cerium oxide as CeO . The colored glass has the following spectral properties at 4.0 mm. thickness: 65 to 81% light transmittance using Illuminant A (LTA) and using Illuminant C has a dominant wavelength of 488 to 494 nanometers with an excitation purity of 4 to 11%.

Amber-free reduced blue glass composition

The invention is a method of retaining selenium in a lass containing selenium by including a manganese compound and not including nitrates or nitrites routinely used in the industry to retain selenium. Particularly, a preferred embodiment involves manufacturing a gray soda-lime-silica glass composition including selenium as a colorant, the components of the gray soda-lime-silica glass have colorants consisting essentially of: greater than 0.9 to 1.9 wt. % total iron oxide as Fe O ; 0.10 to 1.00 wt. % manganese compound as MnO ; 0.0010 to 0.0060 wt. % selenium as Se; 0.002 to 0.025 wt. % cobalt oxide as Co, and 0 to 1.0 wt. % titanium oxide as TiO which are combined and melted to make the glass composition. The glass composition has at 4.0 mm. thickness: 10 to 55% light transmittance using Illuminant A, less than 25% ultra violet transmittance, and less than 50% infra red transmittance.

Nitrate/nitrite-free manufacturing of glass with selenium

The colorants of the glass composition consist essentially of: greater than 0.5% total iron oxide as Fe,O,with a maximum of 1.5% Fe,O,, wherein the redox ratio of FeO/total Fe as Fe,O,, is less than 0.26; 0.10 to 1.00 wt. % manganese compound as MnO,; 0.0005 to 0.004 wt. % selenium as Se; up to 0.016 wt. % cobalt oxide as Co; the glass composition having, at 4.0 mm. thickness: 570-585 dominant wavelength, 5-30% purity of excitation, 20 to 65% light transmittance using Illuminant A (LTA), less than 35% ultra violet transmittance measured over 300-400 nm, and less than 46% infra red transmittance measured over 760-2120 nm. At 20-50% LTA, the excitation purity is 7-30%, while above 50% LTA, the excitation purity is 5-20%. This glass is particularly useful for architectural applications.

The invention is a soda-lime-silica glass composition which is blue in color and having improved UV and IR absorption. The spectral properties of the blue glass at a 4.0 mm. Thickness include: 477-494 dominant wavelength and 6-40% purity of excitation. The blue glass composition, by weight, comprises a base glass composition of: 68 to 75% SiO.sub.2, 10 to 18% Na.sub.2 O, 5 to 15% CaO, 0 to 10% MgO, 0 to 5% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, and 0 to 5% K.sub.2 O, where CaO+MgO is 6 to 15% and Na.sub.2 O+K.sub.2 0 is 10 to 20%; and colorants consisting essentially of: 0.4 to 2.0% total iron oxide as Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0.15 to 2.00% manganese oxide as MnO.sub.2 ; 0.005 to 0.025% cobalt oxide as Co, and 0 to 1.00% titanium oxide as TiO.sub.2. The glass is useful for automotive or architectural applications. It preferably is made by a nitrite-free method which may desirably involve the use of a reducing agent during melting operations.
