The invention is drawn to an antibiotic produced by Bacillus subtilis ATCC 55422 having a nominal molecular weight of 580 and the empirical formula C.sub.35 H.sub.48 O.sub.7, or a salt thereof. The antibiotic is useful in inhibiting the growth of bacteria, including Escherichia, Klebsiella, Proteus, Serratia, Bacillus and Staphylococcus.

10'-Desmethoxystreptonigrin, obtainable by cultivation of a strain of Streptomyces albus, A.T.C.C. No. 55161, and salts, esters and amides thereof. The novel compounds have antitumor and antibiotic activity.

Two related, novel antibiotic substances, peptifluorin and neopeptifluorin, are prepared by cultivation of strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens, A. T. C. C. No. 53,958 and A. T. C. C. No. 55,129, respectively.

Cultivation of a strain of the microorganism, Preussia sp., that has been deposited in the American Type Culture Collection as A.T.C.C. No. 20,923, yields a novel antibiotic substance, culpin, that has activity against a selected spectrum of microorganisms.

Cultivation of a strain of the microorganism Micromonospora sp. A.T.C.C. No. 53481, yields the novel antibiotic substance glyphomicin, which is a mixture of glyphomicin A and glyphomicin B.

A novel antibiotic substance EM5596 is prepared by cultivation of a strain of the microorganism Micrococcus luteus A.T.C.C. No. 53598.

Cultivation of a strain of the microorganism Pseudomonas cepacia which has been deposited in the American Type Culture Collection as A.T.C.C. No. 39277, yields novel antibiotic substances xylocandin A and xylocandin B having activity against yeasts and fungi.

A novel antifungal antibiotic which has been designated EM5487 is prepared by cultivating Lysobacter gummosus A.T.C.C. No. 39472 under submerged aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium containing an assimilable carbohydrate and nitrogen source.

A new antibiotic, designated kristenin, is produced by the microorganism Bacillus subtilis. The antibiotic possesses activity against gram positive bacteria.

A mixture of antibiotic substances designated polymyxin F is obtained by the cultivation under controlled conditions of a strain of Bacillus circulans, and is active against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. This strain of Bacillus circulans has been deposited in the American Type Culture Collection as A.T.C.C. No. 31228.

The antibiotic thiostrepton is produced by culturing aerobically Streptomyces laurentii A.T.C.C. No. 31255 in a culture medium containing carbon and nitrogen sources until thiostrepton is accumulated and then recovering the antibiotic from said medium.

The antibiotics LL-AC541 and racemomycin A both members of the streptothricin family are useful as taeniacidal agents.
