A gage for measuring a diameter of a workpiece has a pair of parallel spaced apart side rails. A pair of block sets is mounted between the side rails and spaced apart from each other. A pair of arms extends transverse to the rails through mating profiles in the blocks of each block set. The arms are slidable in a transverse direction to the side rails. Each block set can slide along the side rails and has a single fastener that secures the blocks to the side rails and the arms to the blocks in a desired position. Drag brakes between the blocks and the side rails prevent the components from sliding of their own weight while the fasteners are loosened. The block sets and arms are rotatable 180 degrees about the fasteners when loosened to accommodate outside and inside measurements.

A pipe connector has a rigid seal/support ring mounted on its pin. The pin has a nose and external threads extending rearward from the nose. The rigid seal/support ring is fixedly mounted on an exterior portion of the pin farther from the pin nose than the pin threads. The rigid seal/support ring is installed by a shrink- or press-fit and has a tapered exterior seal surface. The box has a rim and internal threads that mate with the external pin threads. The box has a seal surface for engaging the seal surface of the rigid seal/support ring to form an external seal. The box also has a seal surface to form an internal seal with the nose of the pin.

Production riser connector

A pipe connector for offshore risers has conical thread forms. The connector has a pin with a nose, an external shoulder, and conical first and second pin threaded sections. The first and second pin threaded sections are axially separated by a pin intermediate section that is free of threads. The first and second pin threaded sections are formed on a single continuous taper and on a continuous helix. The intermediate section is also conical and at the same taper as the pin first and second threaded sections. The connecter has a box with a rim, an internal base, and a conical receptacle between the rim and the base. The conical receptacle has first and second box threaded sections that make up with the pin threaded sections. The box also has an intermediate section between its first and second threaded connections that is free of threads. The intermediate sections make up with radial interference. Upper and lower metal-to-metal sealing surfaces are located at the nose and at the base of the pin.

In an earth boring bit of the type having a rotatable cone secured to a bearing shaft, an improved pressure compensating and relief system. A flexible diaphragm has an enlarge peripheral portion in an o-ring configuration sealingly secured in a compensator cavity to form a mud region and a lubricant region. A central portion of the diaphragm has a perforated and ridged protrusion extending into the mud region to form a self energizing area, exposed to the mud region, that seals the perforation when the pressure of the lubricant is less than or substantially equal that of the mud. A wall at the end of the compensator cavity surrounds the mud passage and engages an area around the protrusion when the diaphragm is fully extended by lubricant pressure build-up that exceeds the hydrostatic pressure. Thus, the resulting pressure differential opens the perforation, releases lubricant and relieves the build-up of lubricant pressure. However, the configuration of the protrusion is such as to prevent the entrance of mud into the lubricant reservoir since the exterior area of the protrusion exceeds that of the interior area. The differential pressure to open the perforation is selected to be not less than about fifty psi and the preferred form of the protrusion is substantially cylindrical, its perforation and lubricant entrance being beveled. An absence of metal bonded to the diaphragm helps avoid failures due to stress induce separations and debonding due to chemical attack. Clearances are used between the diaphragm and the end of the cavity and the end of the protector cup to provide self centering with the lubricant and drilling mud passages.

Compensator for earth boring bits

A downhole pressure fluctuating tool having an improved acoustical circuit using a fluid oscillator to generate out-of-phase pressure fluctuations in two output legs, one connected to an acoustical compliance inside the tool and the other connected to an acoustical compliance exterior of the tool in a cavity partially formed by the wall of the well. An acoustical inertance with a pressure node at its midregion connects the two acoustical compliances, and said midregion communicates with the annulus between the body of the tool and the wall of the well to discharge fluid from the body at the pressure node to minimize acoustical losses in the annulus.

Downhole pressure fluctuating tool

An earth boring bit has a nozzle assembly with a wedging retaining ring and a crushed O-ring seal. The nozzle is located in a passage in the drill bit and bears against a shoulder. The retaining ring is secured by threads into the passage to tighten the nozzle against the shoulder. The retaining ring has a bore with an upper rim that encircles a conical section in the bore. The retaining ring conical section mates with a conical section formed on the exterior of the nozzle. The two conical sections wedge the nozzle in place when the retaining ring is tightened. An O-ring is located between the nozzle conical section, the wall of the passage and the upper rim of the retaining ring.

An earth boring rock bit having a sealed bearing and pressure lubrication system for drilling the earth with air or gas as the circulating medium. An annular groove is formed in the vicinity of the seal and connected to the interior of the bit for cooling the ring and cleaning debris from the area of the ring. The air pressure inside the bit is utilized to bias a movable element in the system to urge lubricant to the bearing.

Disclosed herein is an earth boring bit of otherwise conventional construction except for the bearing and cutter retention. A snap fit ring is used to retain the cutter, the grooves that receive the ring and the ring construction being such that the ring is forced into the retainer groove when the cone is thrust inward. The ring cannot therefore accidentally return to its assembly position to permit cutter loss. This enables the use of exclusively frictional bearings and retainer means of exceptional strength and reliability.
