Directory assistance information may be broadcast from a cable head end, or a directory assistance database may be searched, based on a query entered by a user, or both broadcasting and searching may be performed. The search results can be prioritized based on the geographical proximity between locations of the listings in the search results and the location from which the query was entered. The address of the set top device and/or the tap to which the set top device is coupled are used for determining the location from which the query was entered.

Cable connected network server platform for telephone white-yellow page services and emergency 911 location identification

A twisted pair and/or coaxial cable fed, integrated residence gateway controlled set-top device provides a plurality of services. One service is lifeline service which may be provided over the coaxial cable via a cable modem of the integrated residence gateway or over the twisted pair facility. An integrated residence gateway is coupled to either or both of the coaxial cable or twisted pair and distributes the bandwidth facilities available over either service vehicle to customer devices including a set top box. For corporate telecommuters who work from home, a greater variety of services is available. The greater bandwidth of the cable network allows for the faster exchange of information between home and office, allowing the employee working at home to function as if he or she were actually at the office. Individual pieces of equipment connected to the telecommuter's home may be addressed, so that phone and message forwarding may be properly forwarded to the telecommuter's home. Dynamic allocation of the bandwidth available on the cable network allows cable head ends to provide multiple tiers, or levels, of service such that the higher service tiers are less likely to lose bandwidth when traffic increases. Advanced billing options automatically bill the employer for costs associated with telephone calls placed from the telecommuter's home.

Cable connected wan interconnectivity services for corporate telecommuters

A remote control handset for cordless communication with a video controller enables enhanced video control and telephonic communication through the handset in an integrated communication network. Interface features on an integrated remote control and phone handset and in graphical screens displayed on the video appliance to facilitate user control of viewing and telephonic functions available in the aforementioned architecture. The user interface comprises controls or push buttons on a control panel incorporated into the handset. The user interface also comprises graphical screens which may be configured by the user to appear as a picture-in-picture with a video broadcast program on the video appliance, or as a full screen on the video appliance. The invention also provides speed dial features in which a number displayed on an advertisement on the video appliance may be dialed by the user upon engagement of a single control button on the handset.

Integrated remote control and phone user interface

A method and a system for acquiring data frame timing in a discrete multitone modem system in which an acquisition frame is generated having a first predetermined number of impulse signals. Each impulse signal is spaced in time by 2(P+1)T.sub.s, such that 1/T.sub.s is a sample transmission rate, and P is a time length in samples of a cyclic prefix that is added to a data frame. The cyclic prefix length P is chosen such that a channel impulse response seen at a receiver effectively spans no more than P+1 samples when a received signal is sampled at the 1/T.sub.s rate. Data frames are generated subsequent to the acquisition frame. Each data frame includes a cyclic prefix and at least as many data samples as samples of the cyclic prefix. The acquisition and data frames are converted to an analog signal for transmission. The received acquisition frame is sampled and a summation window is advanced one sample at a time through the received acquisition frame. The sampled acquisition frame is summed over each summation window, with each summation window spanning P+1 samples of the acquisition frame. A maximum summation value is determined as the summation window advances, and a data frame boundary is determined based on the summation window corresponding to the maximum summation value. A channel impulse response is estimated based on the P+1 samples of the received acquisition frame corresponding to the maximum summation value, and data is coherently detected based on the estimated channel impulse response.
