A diagnostic testing system for use with two or more lighting systems of the High Intensity Discharge (HID) sports lighting type, wherein two or more lighting systems have their ballasts and diagnostic receptacles combined in a single ballast box at the base of a light pole for diagnostic access. Each lighting system has its own diagnostic receptacle electrically coupled to the other lighting system through a common block supplying power to the multi-system fixture. Each lighting system typically comprises at least one lamp, a ballast, a capacitor, and wiring interconnecting the lamp, ballast, and capacitor. Each diagnostic receptacle includes a continuity plug wired to maintain electrical connection to the common block while it is plugged in, and to cause its associated lighting system to be electrically isolated from the common block when the plug is removed. The diagnostic receptacles are adapted to receive a connector from a handheld diagnostic tester which maintains the electrical isolation from the common block during the diagnostic testing.

Diagnostic tester for multi-ballast lighting fixture

A diagnostic tester for use with a lighting system having at least one lamp, a ballast, a capacitor, and a plurality of wires interconnecting the lamp, ballast, and capacitor. A diagnostic receptacle is electrically coupled to the lamp, ballast, and capacitor. A connector is adapted to engage the diagnostic receptacle and provide an electrical connection therewith. The connector is electrically coupled to circuits for testing the ballast, the capacitor, and the plurality of wires in the lighting system. An indicator is provided for separately indicating whether the ballast, the capacitor, and the plurality of wires are functioning properly. An indicator may also be employed with a pair of terminals on the tester housing for testing the continuity of a lighting system fuse.

Diagnostic tester for lighting systems and method of using same

A light powered chime for indoor use specifically designed to be random, approximating a windchime. In one embodiment a solar cell provides current to a timing circuit and to a storage capacitor. The timing circuit intermittently fires a silicon controlled rectifier causing current to flow from the capacitor through a motor. A striker is connected to the motor shaft by way of a string and clip. Rotation of the motor causes the striker to contact one or more suspended chimes. Randomness is achieved by virtue of sunlight variability and by the mechanical and electrical design.

Light powered chime

A non-dispersive infrared gas analyzer especially adapted for measuring the concentrations of HC, CO and CO.sub.2 in a vehicle exhaust includes a sample chamber for holding a sample gas, a radiation emitter for directing a beam through the chamber and a detector for indicating the amount of radiation absorbed. A plurality of filters each of which transmit radiation at an absorption band of a gas component to be detected are alternatingly positioned in the radiation path to produce a time-multiplexed signal having concentration information for all gases. The time-multiplexed detector output is corrected for gain and offset errors 'on-the-fly', without requiring demultiplexing, through the use of an analog multiplier circuit. The correction factors are themselves determined without demultiplexing the detector output signal.

Method and apparatus for detecting a component gas in a sample

A non-dispersive infrared gas analyzer especially adapted for measuring the concentrations of HC, CO and CO.sub.2 in a vehicle exhaust includes a sample chamber for holding a sample gas, a radiation emitter for directing a beam through the chamber and a detector for indicating the amount of radiation absorbed. A plurality of filters, each of which transmit radiation at an absorption band of a gas component to be detected, are alternatingly positioned in the radiation path to produce a time-multiplexed signal having concentration information for all gases. A calibration assembly is provided which includes a plurality of calibration cells selectively positionable in the radiation path in order to provide an internal calibration standard for two-point calibration of each gas channel. The cells contain one or more of the gas components to be measured at concentrations and pressures predetermined to compensate for the difference in optical path length between the calibration cells and the sample chamber. A technique is provided for characterizing the calibration cells in situ after a conventional calibration, using bottled calibration gas, is performed.

Non-dispersive infrared gas analyzer system

This invention is an electrical control apparatus for control of a transmission apparatus in a motor vehicle which provides safety features and improper operation indications. The transmission apparatus has a plurality of transmission states and at least one motor adapted for shifting between transmission states. According to a first aspect of the invention the input device is a plurality of momentary contact push buttons, and the logic control unit provides a priority of transmission state selection in accordance to a predetermined hierarchy of priority if more than one push button is depressed. In accordance with a second aspect of the invention, the electrical control apparatus provides a fault indication, such as via a lamp, if said desired transmission state differs from said present transmission state for longer than a predetermined period of time. In accordance with a third aspect of the present invention, the electronic control apparatus includes a vehicle speed sensor, and the logic control unit inhibits shifting the transmission and provides an error indication, such as by a lamp, if the speed of the vehicle is too fast for the desired gear.

Electrical control system for control of an automatic transmission

An electric shift apparatus for use with a motor vehicle having an automatic transmission. The apparatus includes a power module adapted to be mounted on the housing of the transmission proximate the transmission mode select shaft and a control module adapted to be mounted in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The power module includes an electric motor driving a speed reduction unit and the lower exposed end of the output shaft of the reduction unit is adapted to be drivingly coupled to the exposed upper end of the mode select shaft of the automatic transmission. The control module includes a plurality of push button members corresponding respectively to the transmission shift positions. An encoder wheel positioned in the housing of the speed reduction unit provides a constant coded signal indicating the instantaneous position of the transmission mode select shaft and this coded signal is compared by comparator means in the logic of the control unit with the selected shift position. The comparator means generates a signal to the motor assembly to move the mode select shaft in a direction to achieve the selected shift position and stops the motor assembly when the encoder signal received from the power module matches the selected shift position indicating that the selected shift position has been achieved.

Electric shift apparatus

The present invention is an electrical control apparatus for control of a manual transmission apparatus in a motor vehicle. The transmission state is selected by clockwise or counter-clockwise motion of a shift select lever via a first motor and forward or rearward motion of the shift select lever via a second motor. The electrical control apparatus includes first set of microswitches for indicating the left, center, right location of the shift select lever, and a second set of microswitches for indicating the forward, neutral or rearward location of the shift select lever. A logic control unit generates a sequence of motor drive signals corresponding to the sequence of motions required for movement of the shift select lever from the present transmission state to the desired transmission state. The control apparatus also includes a motor drive circuit for controlling the first and second motors in response the sequence of drive signals.

Electronic control system for control of electronic electric shift

An electric shift apparatus for controlling a motor vehicle manual transmission. The apparatus includes a power module adapted to be bolted to the housing of the transmission, a control module adapted to be positioned in the passenger compartment of the vehicle, and a gear selector assembly positioned on the steering column assembly of the vehicle. The operator selects a transmission position by movement of an appropriate gear lever on the steering column, a signal corresponding to the selected position is transmitted to the control module, the control module compares this signal to a signal provided by limit switches in the power module indicating the instantaneous position of the transmission, and the control module generates a signal to the power module coded to impart the specific combination and sequence of crossover and shift movements to the transmission select lever required to move the select lever from its indicated crossover and shift position to the crossover and shift positions corresponding to the operator selected position. The required linear movement of the shift lever is provided by a ball screw assembly powered by a first electric motor and the required angular or crossover movement of the select lever is provided by a speed reduction unit driven by a second electric motor.

Electric shift apparatus for manual transmission

The present invention is an electrical control apparatus for control of an automatic transmission in a motor vehicle. The automatic transmission has a motor for controlling the transmission state. The electrical control apparatus includes an operator input device, preferably a set of push buttons, for generating a desired transmission state signal, a transmission state sensing device for generating a present transmission state signal, and a logic control unit for control of the transmission motor. If the desired transmission state differs from the present transmission state, then the logic control unit generates either a clockwise motor drive signal or a counter-clockwise motor drive signal as needed to reach the desired transmission state. A motor drive circuit controls the motor for motion corresponding to the received drive signal. The control logic unit preferably also includes logic for inhibiting the generation of the clockwise and counter-clockwise motor control signals upon detection of an unsafe circumstance which would make a particular shift hazardous or harmful to the vehicle.

An electric shift apparatus for use with a motor vehicle having an automatic transmission. The apparatus includes a power module adapted to be mounted on the housing of the transmission proximate the transmission mode select lever and the transmission kick-down lever and a control module adapted to be mounted in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The power module includes an electric motor assembly drivingly connected to the free end of the mode select lever and a solenoid drivingly connected to the free end of the kick-down lever. The control module includes a plurality of push button members corresponding respectively to the transmission shift positions. An encoder device carried by the motor assembly of the power module provides a constant coded signal indicating the instantaneous position of the transmission mode select lever and this coded signal is compared by comparator means in the logic of the control unit with the selected shift position. The comparator means generates a signal to the motor assembly to move the mode select lever in a direction to achieve the selected shift position and stops the motor assembly when the encoder signal received from the power module matches the selected shift position indicating that the selected shift position has been achieved.
