A presence detector unit (PDU) of the type relying on microwave radiation provides a signal indicating movement within a defined space when such movement occurs. A source of microwave radiation within a housing projects a beam of microwave radiation directed through a side of the housing to suffuse at least a portion of the defined space. A detector within the housing senses changes in microwave radiation reflected back toward the detector. An adjustable beam occlusion structure is supported by the housing and blocks a portion of the microwave radiation emanating from the source and through the side of the housing.

A bag for enclosing a handheld electronic device (HED) comprises a flexible sheet material such as a flexible or stretchy fabric. The material is formed into a bag having a main body and a mouth. The mouth has a periphery smaller than the periphery of the main body. The mouth can elastically stretch to allow passage of the HED. First and second loops are attached to and project from the bag adjacent to the mouth to allow a user to support the bag with thumb and forefinger while inserting the HED. In one embodiment, an elastic structure comprises the periphery of the mouth. The unstretched length of such an elastic structure may be adjusted to compensate for the size of the HED.

An emergency power system for operation during loss of power on power mains comprises a spring-driven energy storage unit (ESU) and a generator. The ESU enters a generator mode responsive to a power outage state of a power sensor, during which mode unwinding of the spring drive powers the generator. After power is restored to the mains, a preferred embodiment automatically rewinds the spring using the generator as a motor.

Bag for handheld electronic devices

A tool for scribing a longitudinal groove on an elongate cylindrical rod suitable for implanting as a prosthetic in a living being supports the rod in a linear groove on a bed of a frame of the tool. A track is mounted on the frame and runs parallel to the groove. A carrier mounted on the track can slide on the track in constant spaced relation to and along the groove. A scribe mounted on the carrier extends toward the groove to contact a rod in the predetermined position. A preferred version of the tool has a clamp mounted on the bed for clamping the rod in the predetermined position. Additional features allow for precise angular positioning of the rod and for scribing a dashed line on the rod. In use, the tool operator places the rod in the predetermined position in the groove. The scribe is then pressed into contact with the rod. While the scribe is in pressed contact with the rod, the operator slides the carrier along the track.

Tool and method for scribing longitudinal lines on a cylindrical rod

A press for forming a workpiece with a tooling set includes an actuator assembly carrying a movable half or punch of the tooling set and having a two phase operation. In the first phase the actuator provides relatively low force in moving the punch to an intermediate position in close proximity to the workpiece. A sensor detects the position of the punch, and when the punch reaches the intermediate position provides a continue signal. The second phase of actuator operation is conditioned on occurrence of the continue signal, and uses normal high force to press the movable tooling half against the workpiece to complete the operation. The low force first phase allows obstructions of any kind to stop movement of the punch during the first phase before high force applied to the actuator may cause damage or injury to the obstruction. In a preferred embodiment the actuator assembly has hydraulic operation.

A liquid-dispensing nozzle has a system for blowing air for a period of time through the nozzle's spout after the liquid valve closes. The flow of air purges and expels most of the liquid adhering to the interior surface of the spout, preventing this residual liquid from contaminating either the ground on which it may fall when the spout is withdrawn from a filler pipe or the air through evaporation. The invention applies particularly well to dispensing of liquid fuels such as gasoline.

A connector cable assembly has first and second plugs wired to permit plugging into a first pair of electrical plugs with a pair of terminals in a first configuration to place the terminals of those plugs in parallel connection, and to permit plugging into a second pair of electrical plugs with a pair of terminals in a second configuration, to place the terminals of those plugs in series connection. In a commercial embodiment, such a cable assembly can be used to provide power to electrical devices such as gas valves connected to receive power in parallel from the first pair of electrical plugs, and to connect in series, safety switches connected to plugs with a pair of terminals in the second configuration. By using an adapter with specialized connections between two sets of terminals it is possible to use additional cable assemblies to connect in excess of two switches in series.

A sorbent filter for use with an air-purifying apparatus. The filter includes a flexible bag and a sorbent material in granular form. The flexible bag defines at least one storage region and is formed of a porous material. The sorbent material is disposed within the storage region. With this configuration, the porosity of the flexible bag is configured to allow passage of air such that the air, including air-borne gaseous molecules or odors, can interact with and be adsorbed by the sorbent material. Conversely, however, the porosity of the flexible bag limits passage of sorbent material granules and dust. As such, the filter generates little if any dust during handling. In one preferred embodiment, the flexible bag is selectively attachable to a separate frame that in turn is designed for mounting within the air-purifying apparatus. With this configuration, the frame can be re-used such that filter replacement requires only a new sorbent filter.

Non-dusting sorbent material filter

A controller area network (CAN) has a plurality of nodes connected to transmit and receive data over a serial data line. An AC power source is also connected to each node. Each node senses the AC power waveform and synchronizes bit transmission and bit detection with the waveform. In a preferred embodiment, each node includes a circuit that detects zero crossings by the AC waveform, providing two accurately synchronized bit intervals per complete AC cycle. A preferred version of the invention includes hardware and software that detects miswires of the node to the data and power lines.

A controller for a system has two or more operating modes. The controller operates according to a different control algorithm in each operating mode. A manually operable switch typically used for sending a reset signal to the controller, may also be used to change operating modes. The controller changes operating mode when it detects that the switch is manually operated during a preselected phase of controller operation, typically when power is first applied. The disclosed embodiment allows up to four different operating modes to be selected. A first selection of operating modes can occurs if the switch is held closed during startup and then immediately released. A second selection of operating mode occurs if the switch is pressed within a preselected time interval after power is first applied to the controller. Both selections can be made during a single start-up event. The controller may use a status light if present, to visually indicate what operating mode has been selected after the time intervals in which to change operating modes have elapsed.

Power up communication interface system

An air duct has a filter mount opening originally intended to accept a shallow filter element for filtering air entering the duct. The opening has an interior flange whose original purpose was to support the shallow filter element. This flange has interior edges defining an air passage opening. The invention is implemented a filter unit including a frame and a deep filter element mounted in the frame. The frame has dimensions allowing the filter unit to replace the conventional shallow filter element with the frame inserted into the air passage opening and closely spaced to all of the interior edges. A resilient gasket is mounted adjacent to the opening's interior flange and projects slightly into the air passage opening so as to contact the deep filter element's frame. The gasket prevents air leakage between the interior flange's interior edges and the frame. In one embodiment, the frame has a flange to mate with a surface of the air passage opening's interior flange so as to prevent air leakage and to position and support the filter unit.

Air plenum filter sealing system

A frame supports a deep filter element to allow the filter element to be installed in a duct's conventional air intake opening as a replacement for a conventional shallow filter element. The frame has a flange to mate with a surface of the intake opening's interior flange. In one embodiment, two identical side panels are assembled with the relatively stiff end panels of a particular filter element to form the frame.

A thermostat employing a lever for selecting the temperature setting has a detent mechanism for creating individual detent positions associated with temperature setting values. In a preferred embodiment the detent mechanism comprises ridges and valleys in the surface of the baseplate on which the thermostat elements are mounted. A projection on the setting lever engages the individual valleys to create the detent effect, and a edge of the cover cooperates with resiliency of the lever to deflect the lever so as to cause the projection on the lever to continually engage the ridges and valleys. Another embodiment has ridges and valleys on the edge of the cover which engage a first projection on the lever. A second projection slides along the baseplate surface and cooperates with resiliency of the lever to deflect the lever creating force urging the first projection into continual engagement with the ridges and valleys.
