A method and associated implementing system eliminates much of the stress presently introduced by the bonding of ophthalmic lens blanks, or blanks to a holding device, namely a metal block. The method of attaching ophthalmic lens blanks to a blocking assembly comprises the steps of shaping a blocking assembly to take the shape of an ophthalmic lens blank surface of an ophthalmic lens, wherein the blocking assembly is not attached directly to the ophthalmic lens blank during shaping of the blocking assembly; and following the shaping of the blocking assembly, attaching the lens blank to the shaped blocking assembly.

The light projection assemblies and opacity monitors described in this specification have an integrating sphere with an input aperture, an output aperture, and a spherical-shaped internal chamber. An LED source is located external to the chamber at the input aperture. A light baffle is located within the chamber at the output aperture. A condenser lens is located external to the chamber at the output aperture.

A device for measuring near forward scatter caused by particulate matter in a fluid is disclosed. The device comprises, according to various embodiments, a transceiver and a reflector. The transceiver includes a light source and a detector. The reflector is positioned opposite the transceiver so that at least a portion of the fluid is present between the transceiver and the reflector. The reflector includes a front portion facing the transceiver. Optical energy from the light source incident upon the reflector is reflected towards the transceiver as a return beam of optical energy, wherein the detector senses primarily optical energy of the return beam that is scattered over a range of near forward angles by particulate matter in the fluid.

Measuring particulate matter in a fluid

Surface ionization technique for detection of airborne particles whereby each particle is pyrolyzed on a hot surface, releasing its chemical constituents, some of which are ionized at the surface, creating a burst of ions that denote the particle's presence. The hot surface is a catalytic material deposited on an inert substrate heated by an internal heating element. Inert substrates are selected to provide mechanical strength, reduce microphonic noise and make a large catalytic surface area achievable, and hence permit high sensitivity while employing reduced quantities of catalytic materials. By locating the heater within the substrate, its electrical parameters are such that the heater power supply can be simplified. The pulses during 'on' parts of the 'on-off' cycles are filtered out and not counted. In one embodiment the hot sensor surface is biased to a high voltage by a high bias resistor and is coupled to a pulse-counting preamplifier through a capacitor. When there is a burst of positive ions from a heated sensor surface, it causes an immediate drop in the bias voltage which cannot be immediately replaced through the biasing resistor. The result is a negative pulse at a preamp proportional to the number of ions in the pulse which is not affected by what ultimately happens to the ions in a turbulent airstream. Heating is accomplished by a current which is alternating 'on' 'off'.
